fQueensland],[A.] Thozet (K, MEL 594741, 594744, 594745, 594'749 MEL 594747, 594748 = probableparalectotypes); (3) Rockhampton,lQueensland], 1"/.1 Dallachy (MEL 594'742; K ar.dMEL 594746 = probableparalectotypes).

BecauseBentham listed four collections(and in the absenceofcollection numbersothers may haye beeninvolved), selectionof a lectotypeis necessary, even though all the materialseen represents this species. The sheetchosen was annotatedby the author in his hand with the published name; the isolectotypewas also seenby him. The lectotypesheet bears two branchletsand a label with only "Queensland Bowman, Dallachy" in Bentham'shand; the upper right-handspecimen (the lectotype) is interpretedas being from the Bowman collection becauseit matchesperfectly the isolectotypeat MEL, which has a label with all the collection data given in the protologuebut was not annotatedby Bentham. The other branchleton the left is interpretedas being part of the Dallachy collection cited. Some of the paralectotypespecimens are listed as probablebecause of incompletedata on them. For example, the Thozet collection at K bears no collection number, but what is probably the same collection at MEL has265 as the collection number;MEL also has severaladditional specimens that are probably parts ofthe samecollection. Similarly, the Dallachy paralectotypefrom Rockhampton has the date 12 Febr 1862 on the MEL sh€etbut lacks a date on the K sheet.

Examination of the original material, kindly made available by the herbarium of the National Museum in Prague, leaves no doubt that this flame is synonymouswith A. canescens. Since three collections were involved, the most compl€teand representativeone is selectedas the lectotypeofthe name.

Albizia r€tusa Benth.,London J. Bot. 3: 90 (1844).

Bentham in the protologue cited two collections and, although they representthe same taxon, lectotypification of the name is prudent, given the stateof knowledgeof the flora in the type region. Benthamannotated both collectionsat Kwith the publishedname and both areflowedng; the lectotype is selectedfrom the more completecollection with at leastone duplicatesheet (at K). This is the same material referred to as the holotype by I. Nielsen (1985: 30).

The type matedal differs from most Australian specimensin having more pairs of pinnae, appressed-puberulous,oblong leaflets, as well as puberulous inflorescence axes and flowers. Unfortunately, there is altogethertoo little Australianmaterial to make a decision, but future research may well require recognition of it as distinct from the rest of the subspecies.

Neptunia gracilis Benth. var. villosula Benth., Fl. Aushal.2: 300 (1864).

Lectotype (here selected):Sturts Creek, lwesten Ausftalia./NorthernTeuitory borderl, F. Mueller (K-Herb. Hooker, lower right-hand specl:l:'err)iisolecto: MEL 596306. Paralectotypes:(1) Gulf of Carpentaria,[Queensland], [W.] Landsborough (MEL 596307); (2) between Darling fRiver] and Coopers Ck, [New South Wales], Nellson (MEL 596308).

A lectotypeis chosento fix the vadetal name, even though itis a synonym,to one of the collections refered to by Benthamin his protologue;all representthe typical form ofM gracllLr and all wereseen by the author of the name. While recognizingthe synonomyinvolved, Windler (1966) failed to name a type of any sort.

Neptunia major (Benth.) Windler, Austral. J. Bot. 14: 408 (1966). - N. grqcilis Berfth. var. major Benth.,Fl. Austral.2: 300 (1864).

LectotJpe (here selected):Rockhampton, [Queensland],[J.] Dallachy (K). Paralectotypes: (l) Burdekin Expedition, [Queensland](MEL 596305); (2) Bay ofInlets, Queensland,1'7'70, J. Banks & D. Solander (BM n v., BRI 392178). The last-namedcollection is M gracllls Benth. var. gracilis.

Benthamcited threecollectors and collectionsit€s in the protologueand in view ofthe fine division oftaxa in the genusit is worth lectotypifying the name. The Banksand Solandercollection might serve this purposebut it appearcto be Neptuniagracilis f. gracilis; thereis no basalgland on the petiole and it is impossible to know the habit of the from which the collection was taken. Both the other collectionsrepresent the speciesbut only the Dallachy specimenat K is annotatedby the authorofthe name, although he also saw the Burdekin Expedition one. Windler (1966) only listed the collections seenby Bentham.

Neptunia monosperma F. Muell. ex B€nth., Fl. Aushal. 2: 300 (1864).

Lectotype(hercselected): GulfofCarpentaria, [?Queensland/Northem Teritoryl,lW. ] Landsborough (K, left-hand specimen)\isolecto: (MEL 596310). Paralectob)pes:(1) upper Victoria R., lNorthem Tenitoryl, Dec 1855, F. Mueller (K, MEL 596309); (2) Albert River, fQueensland],[D.] Henne (MEL 59631l).

In the protologue, Bentham lists three collectors and collection sites, but the Victoria River matedal collected by F. Mueller which Windler (1966) cit€s as "Type" in Mueller's herbarium representsthree taxa. N. monosperma,N. dimorphanthaand N. gracilis f. glandulosa. On the K sheet, specimensof the samethree taxa are mixed, the two specimenson the left being N. monosperma, the cenfte one N. dimorphantha and the dght-hand one N. gracilis f. glandulosa. That Bentham recognizedthe mixture is indicated by two slips in his hand on the sheetat MEL, one bearing the "N. "M annotation monosperma", the oth€r gracilis var. viLlosula", a synonym of N. gracilis. Consequently, although it would appear on the surface that Windler inadyert€ntly had chosen a lectotypeby naming the first of the thr€ecollections cit€d by Bentham, most of the material doesnot accordcompletely with the protologue. Moreover,Windler in his revisiondid not deliberatelychoose lectotypesbut simply repeatedthe collection(s)cited in the protologue, and on this evidencealone, one might argue that he did not expressa choice. It should also be noted that the herb. K specimenof "Victoria Mueller gives only River" and the MEL sheetof what is presumablythe samecollection has "Upper Victoria River/ Dec 1855", the locality as cited by Bentham. fq pet€touuutou sr leeqs slqJ ,,tzgl 1de5761,,8ur,r.r8 8el e qtrm (3uua.^log)uarurceds 1e.tluec u 'pu€ suq leaqs rueq8uruunJeqt',{llEurJ :..20tl8281,, qlr.r 3st e sruequerurcads (3ur1rnr;) puuq lq8rr eql :,,sJe,rouSur,roqs uds/Zo t/628 t qeC,{\e) ot luos pees,,uort€tou aql qlr,\\ auo (3uqrn4) puEqUel 's8el eqt plerJuo-perl e^Bq teeqs aql uo slelqcuerqeelql eqt Io o,rt puE,Z8llz0l Sur,toqspueq srq ur '798I 'unlreqreq laqe1e13urs e seq ur p.rc,reHueqou fq pelueseJd s,ureq8utuunJurog t3aqseqJ (I)

Bentham, but that the material was probably used in drawing up the protologue validating the base name is suggestedby the fact that he describespods and the material in both his own and Hooker's herbarium lacks mature fruits.

(2) The Herb. Bentham sheetbears two specimens(neither with a collection number),one in flower at the top with a pdnt€d label, giving th€ type locality and with Bentham'sannotation on it; the other specimenis in very young fiuit and was collectedby Bidwill and its label bearsBentham's annotation as well.

(3) The Herb. Hooker sheethas two specimenswhich may have been taken from the sametree: the left hand specimenhas maturc leavesbut is stedle; the dght-hand specimenappears to be a duplicate of the flowedng material on the Herb. Cunninghamand Herb. Benth. sheets. The flowering branchlet bears a label in Cunningham's hand giving the type locality of Brisbane River but no collection number.

Even though the CunninghamHerbarium sheetis not annotatedby Bentham,it is the only one with collection numbersand must thereforebe the sheetwhich Nielsen identified as beadng the lectotype; however, he also did not annotatethe sheet. Since there are at least two, possibly three, collections representedon the sheet, one ofthe specimensshould be selectedas the lectotypeofthe name. In view ofNielsen's having romrll'atedCunningham 102 asthelectotype, one of the two specimenstagged 102, both fruiting, must be chosen;the most representativeof these, the specimenon the left side of the sheet,is chosenfor this role. The date of collection must be changedto October 1827,the date given on the main label for the sheet.

Notes on two mimosoid taxa

Albizia amoenissima F. Muell., Fragmenta8: 165 (1874). Type; extremeno heastemNew South Wales. M Gui[oyle (MEL 5o4731).

The specimencitsd, the only material I have found in any of the major Australian herbaria, bears "Northem-Eastern the annotationin (?) Mueller's hand: boundaryof N.S.W." and on the line below, in the place where the collector of Mueller's specimensis customarily indicated,is inscribed what "G". appearsto be a This, I assume, refers to W.R. Guilfoyle, who is cited as the aollector in the protologue. The material on the sheetconsists of a leaf in two parts, the axesof an inflorescenceand, in the packet attached, one completellower that had beendissected (by Mueller?) and severalbuds, aswell as numerousleaflets. The pinnae,in the limited sampleavailable, occur in about22 pairs with alternateleaflets in about 20 pairs. The sessileflowers have a calyx 10 mm long (including the 3 mm long, ovate-deltatelobes); the corolla tube is about 20 mm long with the narrowly lanceolate- triangular, reflexed lobes 8 rnrn long; and the stamens40 lrun long, the tube exsertedabout 6 mm beyond the mouth of the corolla. Both calyx and corolla are denselygolden-brown tomentulose.

Bailey (1883) included the entity along with other Albiziq taxa but seven yeals later in his Queensland Flora (1900), he synonymized it ::r'der Pithecellobium monilifurum (DC.) Benth. Kostermans (1954) followed suit but treated it as a synonym of Cathormion umbellatum (V ahl) Kostermans,a dispositionaccepted by Nielsen(1992) undersubspectes monilifurme (DC.) Brummitt. It seemsobvious that neitherBailey, Kostermansnor Nielsensaw the type, for the matedal represents a wholly differenttaxon from Cathormion. "Flora Etymology. Andries lAndrew] Kanis waspreparing text fbr the ofAustralia" on the mimosoid legumesat the time of his suddendeath in 1986. Consequently,it seemsaltogether fitting to name this new speciesin his memory and to recognizehis contributions. I haveused some ofhis materials and notes in the preparation of the manuscriptof the subfamily, minus , for the Flora and naming the speciesfor him is meant as a penonal acknowledgementof his posthumousassistance.

Affinity. The new speciesis closely relatedto A. muellerienumbut differs in a number of character states.A. muellerianam has a small, circular extrafloral nectaryat the apex of the petiole, generally smaller leaflets, much shorter, more or less appressedpuberulous flowers and inflorescences.
