Limited control on the crystalline basement imaged by this seismic transect is available to aid seismic interpretation, as outcrop and drilling are sparse. Neoproterozoic-recent cover thickens to the western end of 13GA-EG1E, with the Neoproterozoic-Ordovician Officer Basin and Cenozoic Eucla Basin combining to provide a cover thickness of up to ~2.5 km. Hence, the seismic profile is a crucial tool for understanding the geology and crustal evolution of this area. The upper crust of the Gawler Craton can be sub-divided into three distinct domains, corresponding to domains previously defined by aeromagnetics. The Wilgena Domain, at the eastern end of the profile, is characterised by apparent east-dipping structures, whereas the Christie and Nawa Domains predominantly contain apparent west-dipping structures. Some of these upper crustal structures can be traced to greater depths, where they either flatten out in the lower crust, or in several cases, offset the Moho. -

Box 498, Adelaide, South Australia 5005 Abstract Playas, mostly in the form of salinas, are characteristic of the Australian arid zone. Many are associated with lunettes in sebkha complexes or assemblages and can be attributed to the deflation of bare alluvial flats. Many playas are structurally controlled. Lake Eyre, for example, occupies a downfaulted segment of the crust, and many other playas large and small are associated with faults. Lakes Frome, Callabonna, Blanche, and Gregory each displays a linear shoreline, but also and arguably, all are located on a regional structural arc. Lake Gairdner occupies a valley probably blocked by faulting. Others may be caused by preferential weathering along fracture zones, some linear but others arcuate. Many salinas are developed in dismembered rivers channels, the position and pattern of which are structurally determined. But many owe their existence to the interaction of several of these factors. The various salts precipitated in playas constitute a significant resource, regional and local, past, present and future. The traditional owners of this country are the Kokatha people and they were involved with planning and preparation of the survey and accompanied survey teams during the expedition itself. Lake Torrens National Park and surrounding areas have an arid climate and are dominated by three land systems: Torrens (bed of Lake Torrens), Roxby (dunefields) and Arcoona (gibber plains). -

Lambeckl Teleseismictravel-times recorded acrossthe central Australian basins and Musgrave and Arunta Blocks impose signifrcant constraints on crustal and upper mantle structure. Major discontinuities in lateral structure are required, particularly acrossthe Redbank-Ormiston Thrusts in the Arunta Block and the Woodroffe-Mann Thrusts in the Musgrave Block. The deep structure of these tectonic units exhibit considerablesimilarity, and in both instances the thrusts dip at about 45" through to the Moho. Major offsets in Moho depth are produced which have persisted since the time of the last movements on the faults, about 300 Ma ago in the case of the Redbank Thrust and much earlier in the case of the Woodroffe-Mann Thrusts. The teleseismic models are consistent with deep crustal seismic reflection observations across the Redbank Thrust Zone, and they confirm the conclusion drawn from gravity studies that the region as a whole is not in local isostatic equilibrium and that maximum stress- differenceswithin the crust and upper mantle are of the order of 100MPa. GOTHIAM California. The truncation of these 1.8–1.0 Ga orogenic belts in southwest- ern and northeastern Laurentia suggests KETILIDEAN that they once extended farther. We propose that Australia contains the con- tinuation of these belts to the southwest LABRADORIAN and that Baltica was the continuation to the northeast. The combined orogenic LAURENTIA system was comparable in
