Die Hindostan transportierte die Geschenke für den Kaiser im Gesamtwert von ca. 14‘000 Pfund. Alexander hat Macartneys Audienz beim Kaiser Qianlong in Chengde nicht persönlich beobachten können. Nach der Rückkehr des Kaisers nach Beijing, muss die britische Gesandtschaft Beijing verlassen. Die Reise geht nach Tianjin, Linqing bis Hangzhou, über Ningbo nach Zhushan wo die Hindostan vor Anker lag. Die Hindostan segelte nach Guangzhou, wo Alexander eine Englische Faktorei besucht und im Speisesaal Ansichten von Thomas Daniell bewundert. Dann wartete die Gesandtschaft zwei Monate in Macao. Für Alexander war dies die ergiebigste Periode der Expedition. Viele nach seinen Entwürfen radiert und gestochene Illustrationen zeigen Szenen aus dem chinesischen Laufen auf den Flüssen und Kanälen und an den Ufern. Aus seine Schriften ist bekannt, dass ihn das glänzende Gelbgold chinesischer Dachziegel auf kaiserlichen Palästen und die kräftigen Blautöne der höfischen Kleidung der Mandarine tief beeindruckt haben.     The Qianlong Emperor Hunting Hare: From the Qing Esthetics of Nature to an End of European Exceptionalism Philippe Forêt This short piece suggests that a poly-centered approach to the baroque should consider the relationship that eighteenth-century China had with Europe. Granting baroque paintings of nature and wildlife the cultural and political significances they embodied at the time could be a step toward the recognition of a global baroque. The Qing’s inordinate interest in cavalry maneuvers and hunting rituals was related to the dynasty’s celebration of its non-Chinese identity. The Qing court acquired European baroque knowledge and techniques primarily in order to project legitimacy and prestige across the different cultures of the Qing Empire. By promoting these techniques, models, and standards, the Catholic artists and scholars in residence at the Manchu court conveyed a message about the legitimacy and universality of a dynasty that ruled on both sides of the Great Wall, from the steppes of Kazakhstan to the jungle of Guangxi. The command of a common pictorial language facilitated the exchanges that linked King Louis XV of France to the Qianlong emperor and connected the two monarchs’ conceptions of glory and duty. The spectacle of European-looking horses grazing peacefully in the Mongolian prairie leads therefore to fundamental questions about the place of art and the environment in empire building.     ARTICLES Persecution of the Czech Minority in Ukraine 8 Mečislav BORÁK at the Time of the Great Purge Persecution of the Czech Minority in Ukraine at the Time of the Great Purge1 prof. Mečislav BORÁK Abstract In its introduction, the study recalls the course of Czech emigration to Ukraine and the formation of the local Czech minority from the mid-19th century until the end of 1930s. Afterwards, it depicts the course of political persecution of the Czechs from the civil war to the mid-1930s and mentions the changes in Soviet national policy. It characterizes the course of the Great Purge in the years 1937–1938 on a national scale and its particularities in Ukraine, describes the genesis of the repressive mechanisms and their activities. In this context, it is focused on the NKVD’s national operations and the repression of the Czechs assigned to the Polish NKVD operation in the early spring of 1938. It analyses the illegal executions of more than 660 victims, which was roughly half of all Czechs and Czechoslovak citizens executed for political reasons in the former Soviet Union, both from time and territorial point of view, including the national or social-professional structure of the executed, roughly compared to Moscow. The general conclusions are illustrated on examples of repressive actions and their victims from the Kiev region, especially from Kiev, and Mykolajivka community, not far from the centre of the Vinnycko area, the most famous centre of Czech colonization in eastern Podolia. In detail, it analyses the most repressive action against the Czechs in Ukraine which took place in Zhytomyr where on 28 September 1938, eighty alleged conspirators were shot dead, including seventy-eight Czechs.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 2 Abstract Abstract This thesis considers the Chinese Blueshirts organisation from 1932 to 1938 in the context of Chiang Kaishek's attempts to unify and modernise China. It sets out the terms of comparison between the Blueshirts and Fascist organisations in Europe and Japan, indicating where there were similarities and differences of ideology and practice, as well as establishing links between them. It then analyses the reasons for the appeal of Fascist organisations and methods to Chiang Kaishek. Following an examination of global factors, the emergence of the Blueshirts from an internal point of view is considered. As well as assuming many of the characteristics of a Fascist organisation, especially according to the Japanese model and to some extent to the European model, the Blueshirts were in many ways typical of the power-cliques which were already an integral part of Chinese politics.

Following our recent lectotypification (with a specimen from G-DC) of the name Senecio praealtus Bertol. var. borysthenicus DC. validated by de Candolle based on Andrzejowski's and Besser's specimens from Ukraine, we provide here information on additional original specimens of that taxon (KW: Besser and Turczaninow historical collections), which is now recognized as Jacobaea borysthenica (DC.) B.Nord. & Greuter and which was until recently widely accepted as Senecio borysthenicus (DC.) Andrz. ex Czern. (Asteraceae). In particular, there are two isolectotypes in KW collected by Andrzejowski near Kyslyakivka (now Lymany, Mykolayiv Region, Ukraine), as well as some other specimens collected near Zaporizhzhya (Andrzejowski) and in southern Podolia (Besser and/or Andrzejowski). Some related Eastern European taxa of the taxonomically complicated Jacobaea vulgaris Gaertn. (= Senecio jacobaea L.) aggregate and misapplied names are discussed as well. The identity of the name Senecio divaricatus Andrz. (nom. illeg., non L.) is clarified; it is a synonym of Jacobaea borysthenica. It is also confirmed that Senecio podolianus Panigrahi is an illegitimate replacement name for S. borysthenicus.
