All the ways they have made you who you are today and who you will become, because of their presence, because of their walking with you a little ways or a long ways down the path of your life. It is overwhelming and humbling to sit and reflect on all these pathways converging and going off again – the tracks of lives lived, lives walked on, lives coming. For all the ways you have been present – the big and small ways, it doesn’t matter – presence is about being, and each of you has been present in my life in ways that are yet a mystery, revealed to me as I walk this path of life, better, deeper, becoming more human because of your being part of me, whatever part of you that you have left with me, the multitude of gifts that I carry into my days. Ripples of the stone tossed in water. So, whether you know it or not, your presence has changed the shape of my life. Some of you have already walked on to Spirit. But whether you are here on our Mother Earth or have left this Earth now, I am so much the better because of your having given me the gift of part of you. (And lest I forget, to my two Choctaw language teachers, Alice and Ida Mae, who persistently and without fail keep trying to get me speaking Choctaw…I have a sneaking suspicion this is mostly for the laugh they have at my expense) My mischievous cohort of fellow Kanien’keha learners in 2005-2006 at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory Our Indigenous Thinkers group at the UA: Maxine Baptiste, Jamie Billiot, Gilbert Brown, Jodi Burshia, Duffy Galda, Candace Galla, Angie and Vangie Hoffman, Keisha Josephs, Depree Shadowwalker, Roberta Tayah, Melo Carmen Tirado-Paredes, Tracy Williams…a group of extraordinary people….our mutual support network has been a big part of getting me to this point To my UA Committee: To my Chair, Professor Norma González. You are not only an academic Elder, you are an Elder in the fullest sense of the word. I arrived at the UA into your class, running in the door 15 minutes late (always) from my drive from New York, and I complete the circle with you closing the door of your office at LRC for the last time. I could not have asked for a more profound thinker, mentor and intellectual activist, and the best of role models. I would never have gotten through these years had it not been for your steadfast support, guidance, encouragement, and compassion. Your unfaltering presence. You are my rock here – you have grounded me and reminded me – and made sure I kept going. Thank you for putting up with me. Anything I accomplish in the future is an expression of your guiding presence. I cannot say a big enough thank you. To my Committee members, Professors Mary Carol Combs, Sara Tolbert, and Bryan Brayboy. I thank each of you for your individual gifts that you have offered again and again to me. Your profound commitment, generosity, and the great humor that comes with humility and wisdom have moved me and re-ignited my own passion for scholarship and engagement when it has waned. We miss you, Dr. Ruiz. And the biggest of thank you’s to Marie Ruiz – thank you for sharing your husband with all of us LRC-ers for so long. Your generosity has meant, as Dr. Moll said at his dear friend’s memorial, that so many activist scholars are out there, on the ground, nurturing future generations of Dr. Ruiz-es into fruition. We work with him in our hearts. Dedication To all of you who saw something I could not see in myself. And for those of you who have journeyed on to the Spirit World – till we meet again to pick up where we left off. ‘Let’s see now…where were we?!’ To ALL those involved in the restoration, renewal, and resurgence of Rotinonhsionni languages (and Indigenous languages everywhere!) – for your courage, brilliance, commitment, and love. You have heard them call us home to who we are, and you are honoring that call. Abley also highlights languages that can be found closer to home: Yiddish in Brooklyn and Montreal, Yuchi in Oklahoma, and Mohawk in New York and Quebec.

    Kanien’keha / Mohawk Indigenous Language Revitalisation Efforts KANIEN’KEHA / MOHAWK INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE REVITALISATION EFFORTS IN CANADA GRACE A. GOMASHIE University of Western Ontario ABSTRACT. This paper gives an overview of ongoing revitalisation efforts for Kanien’keha / Mohawk, one of the endangered Indigenous languages in Canada. For the Mohawk people, their language represents a significant part of the culture, identity and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. The endanger- ment of Kanien’keha and other Indigenous languages in Canada was greatly accelerated by the residential school system. This paper describes the challenges surrounding language revitalisation in Mohawk communities within Canada as well as progress made, specifically for the Kanien’keha / Mohawk language. EFFORTS DE REVITALISATION LINGUISTIQUE DE LA LANGUE MOHAWK / KANIEN’KEHA AU CANADA RÉSUMÉ. Cet article offre une vue d’ensemble des efforts de revitalisation linguis- tique réalisés pour préserver la langue mohawk / kanien’keha, une des langues autochtones les plus menacées au Canada. Pour la communauté mohawk, cette langue constitue une part fondamentale de la culture, de l’identité et du bien-être des individus, des familles et des communautés.     Natural Language Generation for Polysynthetic Languages: Language Teaching and Learning Software for Kanyen’keha´ (Mohawk) Greg Lessard Nathan Brinklow Michael Levison School of Computing Department of Languages, School of Computing Queen’s University Literatures and Cultures Queen’s University Canada Queen’s University Canada [email protected] Canada [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Kanyen’keha´ (in English, Mohawk) is an Iroquoian language spoken primarily in Eastern Canada (Ontario, Quebec).´ Classified as endangered, it has only a small number of speakers and very few younger native speakers. Consequently, teachers and courses, teaching materials and software are urgently needed. In the case of software, the polysynthetic nature of Kanyen’keha´ means that the number of possible combinations grows exponentially and soon surpasses attempts to capture variant forms by hand. It is in this context that we describe an attempt to produce language teaching materials based on a generative approach. A natural language generation environment (ivi/Vinci) embedded in a web environment (VinciLingua) makes it possible to produce, by rule, variant forms of indefinite complexity. These may be used as models to explore, or as materials to which learners respond. Generated materials may take the form of written text, oral utterances, or images; responses may be typed on a keyboard, gestural (using a mouse) or, to a limited extent, oral. The software also provides complex orthographic, morphological and syntactic analysis of learner productions. We describe the trajectory of development of materials for a suite of four courses on Kanyen’keha,´ the first of which will be taught in the fall of 2018.

    1 From the Editor ... I never imagined that I would ever be the editor of a magazine, yet - here I am. I never imagined that my journey from Jamaica to Grinnell would have aforded me so many opportunities for global encounters yet, I have countless stories to share. Hi! My name is Courtenay Fyfe-Williams, class of 2019 and this year’s MOSAIC Editor. Working on MOSAIC these past few months has been an overall awesome experience – not always easy, but totally worth it! Like mosaic art, MOSAIC is a publication which brings together the unique, global encounters, experiences and refections of students, faculty, staf, and alumni. It is a celebration of the beauty, vibrancy and diversity that fourishes at Grinnell. Having come from a culturally diverse background, I am honored to be able to bring the stories of Grinnellians, past and present to you. I would like to thank Karen Edwards, Brenda Strong and Mollie Ullestad for entrusting me with this project and assisting me along the way. Thanks to Carlton Segbefa ’21 for designing the cover art and to everyone who contributed to this magazine – it would not have happened without you.
