The End of Senior Year: An Album for Our Four Year Lettermen Much Sooner Than We Senior Year Pages 21 & 22 Hoped Pages 19 & 20 Pages 17 & 18 NEWS MAGAZINE 2 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Greetings Sheridanites,

As we say goodbye to the halls we have called home for the last four years, I believe it is a good time to relish in the memories we have shared with each other. With this end of the school year, our journalism class loses many aspiring writers with talents all their own. Within this edi- tion, appropriately titled the “Senior Edition”, you will get a taste of all the works of creative genius our class has managed to create over the short 18-week period as we say goodbye to the seniors of 2020.

As you go through each and every article laid out in front of you, please note that our peers spent countless hours perfecting their chosen topic to feature within the pages of our printed newspaper. While not every- one’s works made it into the paper, I would highly encourage everyone within the travel to our website to explore some of your interests as well. Within the website, thegeneralidea.org, there is every range of articles from entertainment, to sports, to politics, etc. Long story short, I believe that within the website there is something for everyone.

As this letter comes to a close, I would like to take a moment to thank the many people who have helped me along the way in creating this newspaper. First, and foremost, I would like to thank Mr. Horn. Without his constant vigilance his paper would never be finished on time. I would also like to take the time to thank the rest of my design team. Without the help of Hunter Dishon (Copy Editor/Section Editor) and Emily Phafl (Cover Artist), this edition would not be nearly what it is today. I would also like to thank the section editors - Taylor Routte, Drea Nihiser, Clare Finck, and Casey Patterson - for their diligent work when it comes to overlooking the articles, and students, within their sections. They make my life much easier. Without further ado, I hope that each and every one of you have an amazing summer break before coming back for a fresh new year, or go off to start their own new adventure. Think not of what has passed, but think ahead to what you will become.

Sincerely,

Murphy Van Balen

How I made it through high school:

For me, I found it to be beneficial to establish a set schedule by prioritizing assignments. It helped me stay on top of my school work, but not entirely overwhelmed or consumed by whatever I would be working on. I also made sure to always save room for breaks. Doing so helped me stay motivated and on task. Advice to my classmates: Thankfully, Mr. Culver made the class really fun and it will forever remain my most memorable To my fellow esteemed graduates: we are class in addition to being the hardest. moving on at last, although we all wish our high school journey ended on better terms. It seems to me that fate has destined us for adversity. We were born in the shadow of the worst terrorist attack in our nation’s history and have come to find ourselves graduating in the midst of a global pandemic. The lost opportunities to partake in our last prom and graduate together with our closest friends and classmates have not been without gain, for they have taught each of us the resilience needed to lead a successful life. In addition, this time has taught us to no longer take each day for granted by thoroughly enjoying each moment, and each day, you are granted in life. I have no doubt that the Class of 2020 will be a high-achieving group of adults, standing by to take on any obstacle. I wish each of you the best of luck in your future endeavors. We have made many important friendships and memories through our attendance at Sheridan High School. I hope that we can remember all of these wonderful moments. All the time with our friends while getting ready for football games, cheering on the sports teams, dancing our hearts out at prom and homecoming, and laugh- ing with our friends in the hallways between classes. Unfortunately, we did miss out on our last prom, spring sports, and graduation. It is hard to comprehend the fact that we were not able to attend all of our “lasts” in high school.

The class of 2020 now knows the difficult les- son of how short life is. We will now take ad- vantage of the time that we have with others. I hope that we use this time to learn how to be in the present and to not wish the time that you have away. It may be a difficult journey, but you will be thankful for preserving through those tough times later in life.

This chapter of our lives has ended and a new one will soon begin. We are all taking different paths and deciding our futures. Some of us will be attending college, entering the workforce, or joining the military. No matter what we choose, I know that we will all be successful in life. We may cross paths again and will hopefully rem- inisce on the happy memories that we have made here at Sheridan High School. NEWS MAGAZINEthings 12after his days at Sheridan High School. Exceptional Athlete: Kendyl Mick

The outstanding senior athlete is Kendyl Mick. Kendyl is a four year Varsity letterman in both basketball and volleyball. She has been partici- pating in sports since she was in kindergarten, and initially got started because of her family. She said that she was always at her siblings sporting events, and this made her want to participate her- self. Her favorite thing about playing sports is the competitiveness. She loves to win and is a super competitive person who hates to lose. Her inspira- tion is WNBA player Sabrina Ionescu.

Kendyl has played basketball and volleyball dur- ing her four years of high school. Her favorite sea- son was the 2018-2019 basketball season because that was the year they made it to the Final Four, and the best specific memory was when they won the Regional Final game against New Philly at Zanesville High School that same season. Kendyl plans to attend the University of Findlay on a full ride scholarship to play basketball.

Of course, being this invested in sports does not come without a price. Mick says that every year on her birthday, she spends her special day at a basketball tournament in Louisville. She also says that there have been countless parties or sleepovers that she has had to miss because she had a game that night or the next day. This is a struggle any athlete can relate to, although the sacrifice is usually worth it. When asked what about sports makes it a good idea for incoming freshmen to join, her answer was that sports will give you immediate friends in high school. It can also help keep you out of trou- ble and help you avoid getting involved with the wrong crowds. She also said that sports can help you set goals and achieve them. Her last benefit of joining sports is making school history. Winning championships can really set you down into the memory of the school forever.

We all know that Kendyl is an exceptional athlete, but she is also an extraordinary person. I speak from personal experience when I say that she is a fantastic teammate, and always made sure to include everyone. She is a wonderful role model for any younger athlete, and I wish her the best of luck in college and beyond.

NEWS MAGAZINE 15 15 WHAT HIGH SCHOOL HAS TAUGHT ME Written by: Kelsi Snider I have had a rather interesting high school experience. I started high school in a private school with 12 kids, half of which I was related to, and I am now ending it during a global pandemic. I attended Bremen Holiness School from kindergarten to ninth grade and Sheridan High School from tenth to twelfth grade. Growing up in a small, Christian school I did not have the “normal” experiences of being in a public school. Due to this, when I came to Sheridan my sophomore year I never would have imagined that I would be sad to leave high school behind me.

My freshman year felt like every other year. I did not feel like anything had changed in between my middle school years and my first year of high school. Due to everyone being in the same building and the same room, the real adjustment was not until my sophomore year when everything changed. My first day at choir helped improve my leadership skills and Sheridan I was completely overwhelmed not only learn what it was like to be a part of a team. with the amount of people, but the size of the Although I never would have thought that it would building and how the learning was done. Being in NEWSshow MAGAZINE in it this16 fall. Without being in show choir or deciding to try a new language, I never would have learned one of the most important lessons that high school taught me. Through these experiences the thing that I have learned the most is do not be afraid to try something new. I was rather shy when I first came to Sheridan, and talking to people outside of my circle was something hard for me. However, through putting myself out there and trying something new, with new people my time in high school was completely changed. I was able to join a group of people with similar passions and develop new friendships with people I never would have met. The family-like bonds that you form while in a group that spends that much time together is something that is irreplaceable. If I were too afraid to try out for show choir, I never would have met some of my closest friends.

The second thing that I learned is to have patience and give it a second try. Although it may seem difficult, it is always worth it to give it another try. Like everything in life, if something is worthwhile it will take time. Being in show choir for two years helped me learn that it takes time and effort if you want to improve. With patience and practice you can improve if you have the motivation. Taking Spanish classes challenged me mentally and to open my eyes to a whole new culture. It was a As a senior during this pandemic, I have learned difficult language to learn and changed that it is important to be in the moment. If I would everything that I thought I knew, but it helped me have known that the second half of my senior to grow as a person and learn to not give up. year would be from home, I would have spent my time differently. It is important to enjoy every day as a blessing, because you never know if today is your last day. Taking time to enjoy the small high school experiences, like lunch with your friends, or talking to your favorite teachers everyday is something you should enjoy while it lasts.

If I had any advice for incoming freshmen, it would be to try as many activities as possible, and enjoy even the small experiences. Although I was not involved in much during high school, the time that I spent in those activities were the most important parts for me. The opportunities that extra curricular activities give you are not only helpful in school, but out of school as well. Memories from high school and my time at Sheridan is a priceless experience and extracurriculars are what gave me those memories. NEWS MAGAZINE 17 17 THE END OF SENIOR YEAR: MUCH SOONER THAN WE HOPED Written by: Murphy Van Balen

For every high school senior, the last few months of school are bittersweet. We are all excited to leave, to start our own adventure doing what we love, but none of us are ready to say goodbye to the memories we made within the halls. We are all ready to experience the final milestones every graduate speaks so fondly of. That senior prom with the perfect dress and perfect date. That final day. Walking the halls to the clapping of the stu- dents and staff. Walking across that stage and receiving the diploma we worked for all our lives. Making it to the end. Saying goodbye.

However, as the global pandemic known as COV- ID-19 takes over, those dreams seem farther out of reach than ever before. Many seniors fear that the Friday following Governor Mike DeWine’s state- ment to close the schools may be their last time To the senior class, this in not an extended spring within the halls that we have called home for the break. That they can- cel something we have worked with every fiber of our being to make happen. While this announce- ment seems more likely as every day goes by, the hope the class of 2020 holds remains strong.

Throughout the last thirteen years of our lives, we have worked diligently without fail to make it to where we are today. We have studied hard and pushed ourselves to be the best that we could be. We have stayed up late into the night working on that paper that was due the next morning. We have spent hours emailing teachers back and forth to understand what is happening in the class. We have spent countless hours memorizing lines for the play, learning the dances for completions, and working with team mates in hopes to get that big win. We have worked our hearts out for something that is being stripped from us in the last moments of our high school career.

Nothing feels worse than cancelling that senior spring break trip that you’ve been looking forward to for months, or having to look at the prom outfit you were so excited to wear because you finally asked that special person and know that it will never serve its purpose. I included 8TEEN by Khalid in the playlist because as seniors, we are all around the age of eighteen, obviously, and we listened to this song pretty of- ten during my time in English Composition. This song is an ode to being eighteen and touches up The Cave - Mumford & Sons on many topics that teens are familiar with, from first loves, strict parents, to staying out late. Remember You Young - Thomas Rhett

Remember You Young by Thomas Rhett is our class song and was intended to be played after our graduation. As our gradation will be virtual, I figured it would be a good song to add to the play- list. It features Thomas Rhett reminiscing about his buddies that he grew up with. I thank Colton Talbot for recommending this song.

Old Friends - Ben Rector

This is another one of my favorite songs off the playlist. The first time I heard it was just after the beginning of the break from school and I ended up tearing up a little bit as I remembered my friends. If you take anything away from listening to this playlist, this should be the song that you remem- ber.

On Track - Tame Impala

If any of you know me, you know I have to in- clude a Tame Impala track on here. I believe that On Track is a perfect addition to this playlist as it reminds us that even though the Coronavirus has interfered with our daily lives and our gradua- tions, we are still on track in our lives and will still make it through this.
