mmi-pro-file 3.15.21

CURRENT POSITION: MicHAel SVP OF PROGRAMMING. HEAD OF MUSIC Martin INITIATIVES.

We’re seeing singles moving quickly up the charts that have been explosive at the audio/video streaming level. Is it safe to say programmers are picking plums from there more than ever? Streaming data is definitely another tool. I look at streaming as walmart. The songs are put on the shelves, playlisting is putting certain songs on end aisle displays, then we see what the customer buys. It’s a great tool to see consumption. I would stop short of saying streaming is breaking music that radio is picking from. Radio is curation. Putting a song on a shelf in front of a potential customer is not. What was the first single you ever purchased with your own dough? Cheech and Chong’s, Los Cochinos, . My dad made me “take that filth back” to the store. I think I begrudgingly traded it in for Grand Funk Railroad ‘45. Programmers seem to be equally divided on the validity of retention scores in making rotation decisions. What’s your take? Ok, so you want to start a fight. If I’m #1 w18-49, that current pack of meter holders have rewarded me #1. I would look closer at how they are scoring songs than if the current pack of meter holders were rewarding me 10th place. If I keep playing to the panel rewarding me at 10th, I’ll stay in 10th. I’ll listen more closely to the people rewarding us #1. That’s my stance.

Lightning Round: 5 and 5 movies that you can’t live without?

Movies: Stepbrothers House of 1000 Corpses It Might Get Loud Deadpool Django Albums: Eagles - Hell Freezes Over - ten Gary Clark Jr. - Blak and Blu Miles Davis - Kind of Blue Rush - Exit Stage Left Bonus. I went back and bought the Cheech and Chong album

What can terrestrial Top 40 do to capture and hold those fickle younger demos? a. Stop doing the same thing you did when you started in this industry thinking it will work today. Don’t be contrived. Don’t pander. Truly understand and reflect them in every way. If you don’t understand them, put people around you that do and listen to them. Don’t hire jocks. Hire people who can communicate every way the audience is communicating. Put your product on every platform the audience is using to consume content. Talk to them via every piece of tech they are using to communicate and do it in their language. Their bs detector is on high so they will sniff out and reject anything that isnt authentic. And the reality is authentic doesn’t have to sound like a polished disc jockey. It just has to be real. b. There is reality and there is Neilsen reality and the two are not necessarily the same. You have to serve both masters and speak to the people who will carry a meter but also speak to those who won’t, yet.

If (God forbid) radio never existed, what would be your second career choice? Ride operator at Disneylands haunted mansion. I would be just fine with that.

BRUNO MARS and ANDERSON .PAAK (SILK SONIC) with ELVIS DURAN

What a week for Bruno, Anderson and Silk Sonic. Besides tearing a hole in the airplay chart, the on-line and modern media buzz is koo-koo to find out more. MMI got up early to dial in our friend Elvis Duran as he extracts the deets from our heroes. And after a sly and charming Tweet-fest, Silk Sonic got the thumbs up for an upcoming Grammy performance. Like a legal drug, one listen to “Leave The Door Open” (check video below in Intelevision) creates a silky sensation and you have to have more. To check out a couple of record breaking couch potatoes, Elvis and his golden microphone, click here: mmi-intelevision 3.15.21

Check out these videos hand-picked by our staff!

BRUNO MARS W/ANDERSON .PAAK & SILK SONIC - “LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN” MMI subscribes to the “history being made” theory. Sometimes a new master enters the scene as Bruno Mars did. A game changer. With the grand reveal of Silk Sonic, a brilliant collaboration with multi-Grammy winner Anderson .Paak, Mars makes more history with a restyled salute to all that is soul. “Leave the Door Open” is oddly modernistic and retro together, ripping every emotion to a level that only Bruno can. Nothing needed but music. Why do we all do what we do? To find out, click here:

MAROON 5 FT/ MEGAN THEE STALLION - “BEAUTIFUL MISTAKES” MMI Bright Light Alert: When this single shipped, the “First Alert” pings lit up the MMI Action control center like the Rockefeller Plaza Christmas tree. The comic-style etched lyric video takes us through a heartbreak the isn’t sitting easy. But, here comes Megan to flip the coin and get her side of the sordid tale into the single. As our cutest campus couple cruise around in a pink well-drawn car, we learn: In the end, donuts always make everything better! Don’t make a “Beautiful Mistake”, just click here:

SZA - “GOOD DAYS” SZA serves up a sizzling cinematic video clip of “Good Days.” Here’s a perfect example of entangled metaphors that are visually equal to SZA’s left-of- center neo-soul signature. The central theme of the story is a pole dancer takes a trip down the rabbit hole, to the library and finally to a fill-up station. Choreography rating: A plus. What’s happening here? JUSTIN BERBER - “HOLD ON” MMI Intense Video Alert: Dang, Beib, slow that thing down. This heart-ripping clip has more ups and downs than a musical merry-go-round. We have our hero madly in love and robbing banks for all the right/wrong reasons. Throw in a daredevil motorcycle chase (do not try any of this at home), a glass breaking exit, bullet wounds all to lie in the arms of his struggling for life love interest. Three minutes and I’m spent. If you’re up for the ride, “Hold On” and click here:

DUNCAN LAURENCE - “ARCADE” To say that this video has a “floating melody” would be just wrong. Dutch award-winning singer- Duncan Laurence bares more than his soul with this saturated soulful single called “Arcade.” Beautiful and artfully created, young Duncan submerges himself for more than three minutes and keeps the video clothing budget at bare minimum. His voice is angelic, the song hypnotic and it will clearly want you to catch a breath. To play in the “Arcade,” click here: methodology UNDERSTANDING EACH OF THE 6 KEY COMPONENTS
