Since its independence, many countries in the region have heavily depended on agriculture exports to industrialized states to support their economies. This has led to political theorists to label Latin America as an area full of “periphery” countries that are exploited for resources by “core countries. Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua were not the exception. In recent years, however, a noticeable difference between the economies of the countries has helped Costa Rica and Panama become more successful than Nicaragua, on the basis of GDP, GNI, and other similar measures.

    ABSTRACT Origins of Democracy in Costa Rica and Nicaragua David Lewis Pottinger Director: Dr. Lizbeth Souza-Fuertes, Ph.D. An incredible disparity exists between the current political state of affairs in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Costa Rica is a stable democracy with a high rate of development for its region, while Nicaragua is widely considered to be drifting towards authoritarianism and is one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere. This begs the question: what could possibly account for this divide? After all, Costa Rica and Nicaragua share many aspects of culture and geography. Although the broadness of this question means that innumerable answers could be given, this thesis will attempt to demonstrate that a single factor primarily accounts for these differences: the contrasting outcomes of the “Liberal Reform” period (1821-1909) for the two nations. While Costa Rica began pursuing reforms early and gradually, and was largely free from foreign intervention, Nicaragua was repeatedly stymied in its efforts to modernize, both by internal strife and interference from the United States. This division depended a lot on opposite visions of the past that scholars have failed to analyze and document. This essay confronts official narratives of the Costa Rica’s Civil War of 1948 with testimonies and memories of participants to see how the real social confrontation has been hidden in scholars and partisans’ analyses in a way to invent the past. By doing so, this essay goes deeper into testimonies of combatants to determine hidden actions that challenge official revolutionary leaders’ explanations of this conflict. This fame hides a past of tension and some social breakdowns in Costa Rican history, C however – the Civil War of 1948 is one of those moments. President Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia, who won the 1940 presidential election with almost 85 percent of the votes, organized the first and clearest instance of a populist movement in the history of this country, which mobilized thousands of people.

Dark lowland jungles give way to rolling savannas; pacific surf crashes against rocky headlands, all in sharp contrast to the tranquility of palm-fringed Caribbean beaches. Twelve major life zones harbor an astounding amount of plant and animal life. While Costa Rica covers a mere 0.03% of the planet’s surface, the nation is endowed with over 5% of all life forms on earth. Heredia lies just a few miles from the nation’s capital, San José. Nearby are the active volcanoes of Irazú and Arenal. Booming and rumbling with awe-inspiring consistency, they are a reminder of the tremendous power of nature’s geological forces. All of the above provide a tremendous backdrop for a semester of study at our partner university, the Universidad Nacional. The University Much like Lock Haven University, the Universidad Nacional (UNA) can trace its roots back to its founding as a teacher’s college back in 1915. In 1973, UNA was bestowed university status by the government of Costa Rica and now offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in 35 disciplines. The campus is located in the heart of Heredia and, in addition to the academic courses that can be taken for credit, students also have the opportunity to enroll at a nominal cost in artistic workshops that are offered throughout the term on such areas as modern and popular dance, theatre, choir, guitar, marimba, etc.

The Demilitarization of Costa Rica Patrick Buscone College Honors Program College of the Holy Cross May 19, 2017 1 Abstract Costa Rica is one of the few developed countries in the world to be completely demilitarized. In the first chapter, this thesis explores why the country decided to demilitarize and how effective their demilitarization has been. Further statistical analysis is applied in Chapter 2 to determine the effect military spending has on growth in Latin America. With Costa Rica experiencing great stability and growth following their demilitarization and the statistical analysis showing military spending to have a negative impact on growth in Latin America, the third and final chapter explores other Latin American countries that could benefit from demilitarization. 2 Table
