Saunders,II & Anne Marit WaadeI I Media & Journalism, School of Communication and Culture, Aarhus University, Denmark II Department of History, Politics and Geography, Farmingdale State College (SUNY), USA This special collection of articles emerged from a two-day workshop on the topic “Nor- dic Noir, Geopolitics, and the North” held at Aarhus University, Denmark, 4–5 October 2018. Recognising the unabating popularity of the Nordic Noir genre, the workshop sought to extend current media-cultural discussions of Nordic crime television drama to critically assess how topical geopolitical developments both influence and are inter- rogated within these fictional narratives. The genesis of this workshop arose from the intersections between the research interests of this special issue’s three editors, building on Anne Marit Waade’s work on the production, aesthetics, and distribution of Nordic Noir television drama, Pei-Sze Chow’s research on the audiovisual representations of transnational regions in Scandinavia, and Robert A. Saunders’s scholarship on the popu- lar culture-world politics continuum, and more specifically his typology of geopolitical television. Over two days of presentations and discussions, participants worked to bridge the gap between diverse but cognate disciplines such as Scandinavian studies, film and television, literature, geography, and international relations (IR). Generously supported by the pan-Nordic research consortium ReNEW (Reimagin- ing Norden in an Evolving World), which is funded by NordForsk through the Nordic University Hubs initiative, our workshop brought together 21 researchers from across Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Poland, the US, and the UK. -

Is this why Scandinavian crime fiction is so popular? What is it with the terse language, the Nordic landscape, and the protagonists as anti-heroes, feminists, or outsiders that make these crime novels so appealing? Course Format The course will consist of close readings, discussion and written analysis of three Scandinavian crime novels. We will view movies based on crime fiction novels as well as see examples of popular Scandinavian TV crime series. Class meetings will be, for the most part, divided into two sections. The first part of each class will be of lecture format where keywords and concepts are introduced. During the second part, we will discuss and analyze the novel assigned for the day (and when relevant, chapters of the textbooks assigned) relating it/them to the themes of the course. We will be reading three crime fiction novels representing at least three different Scandinavian/Nordic countries. -

A headline on the website associates the phrase “A Cold Night’s Death” with the genre often called Nordic noir. A selection of Swedish book covers is on display, featuring hands dripping with blood, snow-covered fields spotted with red, and dark, gloomy forests. A close-up of an ax on one cover implies that there is a gruesome murder weapon. At a glance it is apparent that Scandinavian crime fiction is set in a winter landscape of death that nevertheless has a seductive allure. -

Investigating Nordic Noir By Sofia Alexi A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Victoria University of Wellington 2017 3 Abstract Alexi Sofia, Film Studies, Victoria University of Wellington Abstract of Master’s Thesis, Submitted 10 April 2017: “Investigating Nordic noir” Scandinavian crime films and television series have become popular in recent years. This thesis explores some of the key texts in ‘Nordic noir’ through a discussion of detectives, the environment, and visual style. The emphasis in the project is on textual analysis. The first chapter examines the figures of Wallander and Lund in Wallander and Forbrydelsen respectively. I argue that the conflicts Nordic detectives often have between work and the domestic sphere are an indication of how gender stereotypes are challenged in the Scandinavian crime genre. The second chapter considers the role of the natural and built environments in Nordic noir. Features such as forests and water play a crucial role in Forbrydelsen because of the ways in which they create uncertainty, anticipation, and suspense. The urban spaces of Bron/Broen develop a sense of anonymity that recalls the function of the city in classic film noir. Rather than developing links between Sweden and Denmark, the series suggests that the Øresund bridge that spans the two countries is ultimately a disconnecting, centrifugal force that functions as what Marc Augé would call a ‘non-place’. The final chapter considers the role of colour and light in the films Insomnia and Jar City. My analysis demonstrates that Nordic noir encompasses more than naturalism and realism. -
