BritishAmerican Business – Join Our Community Today!

The special relationship remains the talk of the town in both the United Kingdom and United States – and it should come as no surprise. Both the UK and USA remain the top sources of Foreign Direct Investment in one another’s economies, directly employing 1.25m people in the USA, and 1.5m people in the UK. But this relationship doesn’t stop at business – indeed, with record numbers of flights between the UK and USA, alongside new direct routes, and the use of speedy e-gates in the UK being extended to US citizens arriving here, each day the Atlantic is looking less like an ocean and more like a puddle for transatlantic travellers.

Our mission is to ensure that this relationship grows in all ways, bringing our two countries closer together than ever before. Only recently, we published the latest in our Trade & Investment Guide series – Finding Your Way: The Trade & Investment Guide to the UK 2019/20 which provides guidance on a range of business issues such as Tax, Intellectual Property, Logistics and Immigration for US companies looking to take their business transatlantic.

Business support is a key component of our mission, illustrated best by our regular Accelerate Series Roundtables. Taking place throughout the year in both New York and London, the Accelerate Series brings together household names, unicorns, and SMEs just finding their feet to discuss, learn and support one another to grow and take their business transatlantic.

But at BritishAmerican Business we understand that underpinning this relationship is a community of friends passionate about the special relationship. That’s why throughout the year we hold events to bring this community together for a celebration of all things transatlantic, away from the politics. You may have seen our ‘Big American Christmas Party’ advertised in the latest American in Britain magazine – but if not we encourage you to check it out.

So, whether it’s to take advantage of our fantastic programming, get support for your transatlantic expansion, or you just want to be a part of this growing community, we say “Welcome!” Get in touch today and find out what opportunities await. www.babinc.org [email protected] 020 7290 9888

The American Society in London

The American Society in London was founded in 1895 by the then US Ambassador Thomas F. Bayard. Indeed, the serving US Ambassador, Robert Wood Johnson IV, remains our Honorary President and we are fortunate to have the generous support of the US Embassy. Membership is open to both US and UK citizens and draws heavily on the US ex-patriot community here in London.

The intention of our founder was to improve and cement relations between the citizens of our two countries, fostering mutual respect, understanding and affection. We continue to fulfil this goal in part by arranging celebrations of major American holidays. In this regard, we think the original objectives have been successful and they continue to be as relevant today as in 1895.

We hold three receptions each year building up to our marquee event in November – our elegant and glamorous Black Tie Thanksgiving Dinner – where guests from the US and UK military are invited to join our members for a traditional Thanksgiving feast with all the trimmings.

This year we kicked off the summer in style with our spectacular Early Independence Day celebration at Wychwood House hosted by our new Deputy Chief of Mission, Yael Lempert. Guests and embassy representatives mingled in the elegant surroundings as we were entertained by ‘barbershop-o-gram’ who performed nostalgic and witty tunes to put us in a celebratory mood. We indulged with relish in a delectable selection of All-American fare specially prepared by the chef in bite sized proportions. Oh, the mini mac and cheese! What a delightful and delicious evening!

The Society would like to extend a warm invitation to Americans in the UK to join us at our elegant Black Tie Thanksgiving celebration in November. It is the original and the best and guests can look forward to a mouth-watering Thanksgiving feast with all the trimmings. Are you more ‘Team Pumpkin’ or ‘Team Pecan’? No need to choose at our celebration. It’s not to be missed!

She quipped about her belated recognition: “I was a woman, Jewish, a widow, a damn good painter, thank you, and a little too independent.” One of the original pioneers of abstract expressionism, Krasner has for too long been eclipsed by her husband, Jackson Pollock. WILLIAM BLAKE With over 300 original works, including his watercolours, paintings and prints, this is the largest show of Blake’s work for almost 20 years. It will rediscover him as a visual artist for the 21st century. Radical and rebellious, he is an inspiration to visual artists, musicians, poets and performers worldwide. The Company continues to support the trade today, and the Fair is one of the many ways we do this. Exhibitors pay for their stands to help cover the cost, and the Company takes no additional commission or fees from the makers. Each year, this unique event draws collectors, design lovers and luxury shoppers to the magnificent Goldsmiths’ Hall where they can browse the latest collections from this handpicked selection of craftsmen and women. Venue: Goldsmiths’ Hall 25th September to 6th October 2019

Umberto Boccioni: Recreating the Lost Sculptures The destruction, in 1927, of a number of plaster and mixed-media sculptures by the Futurist artist Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916) was a tragic loss for avant-garde art. Of the many ground-breaking sculptures, he created between c.1913 and 1915, only a handful remain in existence today. Now, using a combination of vintage photographic material and cutting-edge 3D printing techniques, digital artists Matt Smith and Anders Rådén have recreated four of Boccioni’s destroyed works: a volumetric study of a human face titled Empty and Full Abstracts of a Head, and three of the artist’s iconic striding figures. Venue: Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art
