Pindar and Sicilian Nymphs a Healthy Sense of Our Identity
Pindar and Sicilian Nymphs A healthy sense of our identity – as individuals and as a group – sits upon a scaffold of collective memory. Our all-important sense of ‘belonging’ to a community comes from sharing memories and stories of the past, with those we grew up with, with friends from university, for example, and with fellow members of a broader collective - a town, a state or a country. Current thinking about this ‘social’ memory stresses the importance of localizing it in a material space. (“Who are you?” merges with “Where are you from?”) We anchor our personal and collective memories in a socially specific spatial framework – where we were born, where we went to school etc., what history we inherited. But this contextualization of the self is in trouble. The French historian Pierre Nora, in Lieux de mémoire, a 3-volume work published in 1992, described a phenomenon in France that is familiar to most of us: a historical deracination, the erosion of a common sense of what came before. Human achievements are disembodied now; road signs no longer reinforce a common understanding of the patria. Without a common stock of memories the past is forgotten, supplanted by the bric à brac of the present. So memory has been replaced by commemoration – plaques, monuments, historical sites, theme parks – all serving as entertainment and education, as much for tourists as for natives. Our modern communities are fractured by social mobility, leaving individuals without the comfort of shared stories, songs, and literature that can shape us from a young age as members of a collective. -

1 Chapter 24 The Prelude as History Philip Shaw The long blank verse poem that was published as The Prelude, or Growth of a Poet’s Mind; An Autobiographical Poem in 1850, just three months after Wordsworth’s death, has its origin in a series of verse fragments composed in the early months of 1798. Comprising little more than 1,300 lines, the majority of these verses were conceived as additions to ‘The Ruined Cottage’, the tale of rural hardship that had begun life in the spring and summer of 1797. These poems are: ‘The Old Cumberland Beggar’, ‘Old Man Travelling: Animal tranquillity and Decay, A Sketch’, ‘A Night Piece’ and ‘The Discharged Soldier’. Focused on instances of poverty, grief, and abandonment the thread that binds these works together (the exception is the loco-descriptive ‘A Night Piece’) is a concern with the victims of history. At least three of these poems centre on the sufferings brought about by Britain’s engagement in overseas wars: Margaret, in ‘The Ruined Cottage’, has lost her husband in the American War of Independence; the ailing discharged soldier has returned from suppressing rebellion in the tropics; the old man of ‘Animal Tranquillity and Decay’ is visiting his son, a sailor, ‘“Who from a sea-fight has been brought to Falmouth, / And there is dying in an hospital”’ (LBOP 110; ll. 19–20), and the aged beggar’s vagrancy is almost certainly a consequence of the social deprivations resulting from hostilities with revolutionary France. When addressing the treatment of history in The Prelude, therefore, it is worth bearing in mind the sense in which Wordsworth’s stated ambition, to complete a work encompassing ‘pictures of Nature, Man, and Society’, was born out of observations of the effects of state violence on ordinary men and women. -

American Horticultural Society Travel Study Program HISTORIC SITES & GARDENS OF MALTA & EASTERN SICILY April 10 – 21 , 2019 WITH AHS TOUR HOSTS HOLLY AND OSAMU SHIMIZU AND TOUR LEADER SUSIE ORSO OF SPECIALTOURS Dear Friends, I personally invite you to join our latest American Horticultural Society tour: “Historic Sites & Gardens of Malta & Eastern Sicily,” April 10–21, 2019. When composing this invitation letter, I found it almost impossible to fit the highlights of this journey on these two islands in the Mediterranean into such a small space. The itinerary is overflowing with memorable and noteworthy experiences, but let me attempt the impossible. First, we will visit Valletta, designated a World Heritage Site and the capital of Malta. We’ll board a Maltese water taxi, locally known as a dghajsa, for a tour of Valletta’s Grand Harbour. St. John’s Co-Cathedral, built by the Order of St. John in the 1570s, is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Europe. A highlight of any trip would be to view a Caravaggio painting; on this tour we will see three! On Sicily, we’ll tour the fifth-century B.C. Greek theater in Siracusa, where Aeschylus saw his own plays performed. The layers of architecture in the city are astounding, and it’s no wonder it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since the Middle Ages, the San Giuliano farm has employed organic farming methods, and we’ll learn how and why the farmers do it. Le Stanze in Fiore — a unique garden of modern sculptures and 1,000 varieties of plants — will make a lasting impression. -

One must take its cities, towns, plains or villages and regard them as the living spirit of an island that once equalled Greece in beauty and riches. There is perhaps no spot on earth more glorious in the fallen splendours of the Past, or more lovely in the robe of ruin ;whether that beauty be the serrated north coast, the charm of its folding hills, its picturesque people, its warm and friendly sea, its sunshine, its volcano that claimed all but the slipper of Empedocles, or its ruined temples and amphitheatres that embrace the heart with all the alluring plaint of a lyre when touched by the hand of an Olympian. The spirit of Sicily is so infused into the body of that island, which is less than ten thousand square miles in all, that it is difficut to say where legend leaves off and history begim: But since the earliest dawn of its existence is clothed in mytho-' logy, it is pleasing, even if open to question, to feel that Arethusa landed at the Cape of Naxos on the Taormina shore with the Greeks in the eighth century B.C., and gave her youth to the streams and eternity to the fountains; or that Pythagoras sat with the Iberians, the earliest inhabitants of the isle, and mea sured the heavens or composed a score on the music of the spheres. Taormina the Land of Hyperion: Here overlooking the blue Ionian Sea is one of the loveliest places on earth. -

The myths recited by the different human figures in the poems speak of theft, rape, witchcraft, bestiality, suicide. The passions of human love are more often depicted as destructive than creative. For all this, INTRODUCTION though, these shadows seem incidental correctives to the unalloyed bliss of a remembered, golden age, rather than a wholescale challenge of its legitimacy. The dominant sense that is left is of an idyllic, primitive, Translating Virgil’s Eclogues Eden-like world, where harmony and concord ultimately reign. Some of the issues raised by a translation of the Eclogues, then, derive not so much from Virgil’s actual language, as from the pastoral mode in which he writes. -

Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2015 Because the primary focus of this thesis is Arethusa’s diverse tradition as represented in history and literature, Chapters Two and Three look closely at the intertextual relationships that Seneca and Silius Italicus make use of. Ultimately, the figure of Arethusa transcends genre and singular loyalty to either Greece or Rome: her fluidity and ability to metamorphose account for her many lasting traditions. iii Acknowledgements I am terribly indebted to Professor Mary Jaeger, my primary advisor, for her steadfast support in the writing of this thesis, and for taking me “once more to Syracuse” to examine the city as it appears between texts. Winnington-Ingram at the Institute of Classical Studies and elsewhere know him not only as one of the most acute and sensitive critics of Greek poetry now writing in the English language, but as an extraordinarily helpful and generous friend to our own studies. Now, as the Institute celebrates his entry into his ninth decade, it is a great pleasure to offer him a small return for all that he has meant to US:^ eEoiti& ool toOhGv apogac hvri6wprpJaiaro. Ibycus is particularly suitable for the occasion, because the beginning of the modern phase of critical work on his poetry exactly coincided with the beginning of Professor Winnington-Ingram’s academic career, when he came up to Trinity from Clifton in 1922. Until then there was little basis for an appreciation of Ibycus, whose seven lost books had earned him a place in the ancient canon of nine pre-eminent lyric poets. Citations by other writers preserved a fragment of thirteen lines and another of seven; but a thorough combing of ancient literature and of the scribblings of scholiasts could not amass as many as fifty lines more, of short and miscellaneous quotations, of imponderable quality. True, the fates had been even less kind to Ibycus’ fellow-Westerner Stesichorus, of whose “graves Camenae” the short and pedestrian snatches which survived gave no idea at all - or so, in charity, one hoped.
