I We’re not running out of trees. One-third of the United States land base – 731 million acres – is covered by forests. About two-thirds of that 731 million acres is suitable for repeated planting and harvesting of timber. But only about half of the land suitable for growing timber is open to logging. Most of that harvestable acreage also is open to other uses, such as camping, hiking, hunting, etc. I We’re growing more wood every day. American landowners plant more than two billion trees every year. In addition, millions of trees seed naturally. The forest products industry, which comprises about 15 percent of forestland ownership, is responsible for 41 percent of replanted forest acreage. That works out to more than one billion trees a year, or about three million trees planted every day. The current status of gluing eastern hardwoods is reviewed in this report, with emphasis on hardwoods growing on southern pine sites. The subjects covered include adhesives, wood and wood-surface properties and their interactions with the adhesive, and the quality of the bonds produced when these hardwoods are used in the manufacture of end joints, laminates, plywood, and other composite panels. A variety of adhesives are available that equal or exceed the strength of the hardwoods being bonded. The choice of a particular adhesive is dictated in large measure by the adhesive price and the end-use criteria for the finished product. In discussing the gluing of eastern hardwoods, the approach taken is that the fundamentals that determine the quality of an adhesive bond should remain the same whether the substrate is a softwood or a low-, medium-, or high-density hardwood. To illustrate the differences encountered in gluing the various hardwood species and the best approach for dealing with them in terms of bonding fundamentals, in this report we will concex~trateon: The quality and character of the surface as aflected by wood structure.

To do this, Taguchi's methodology for the design of experiments was used to optimize the process parameters. Trials are conducted using an L16 orthogonal array with 16 combinations of test variables to assess the influence of various factors. Analysis of variance was also employed to investigate which design parameters significantly affect the mechanical properties of melamine coated particle board. The statistical analysis showed that the type of force used was the most significant factor affecting the response. The simulated and experimental results also showed good agreement with each other.
