Hi All

This is just a heads up of potential heavy rainfall in parts of the east and northeast of during this weekend, mainly from late Saturday, Sunday and until Monday. For example on Sunday, rain is expected across most of the state, with 50 to 100mm possible in the northeast and 30 to 50mm for the remainder of the east and the western tiers (See attached picture).

It is likely that an initial flood watch will be issued on Friday. Minor to moderate flooding may occur in the South Esk, North Esk, Macquarie and Meander rivers from early Sunday onwards.

There is still a lot of uncertainty about how much and where the rainfall will occur, so please keep this information for internal usage only until Bureau issues warnings and watches.

Please check latest rainfall forecasts (http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/watl/rainfall/pme.jsP), rainfall and river observations (http://www.bom.gov.au/tas/flood/) and warnings (http://www.bom.gov.au/tas/warnings/) from our website.

You can also use MetEye (http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/meteye/) to check on expected winds, temperatures and rainfall totals for the next few days.

INITIAL FLOOD WATCH FOR ALL NORTHERN AND EASTERN RIVER BASINS Issued at 11 :57 am EST on Friday 3 JuneRTI-DL-RELEASE-DPIPWE 2016

By the Bureau of Meteorology, Hobart.

A flood watch has been issued for all northern and eastern river basins.

Rainfall totals of 60 to 120mm are likely during Sunday, with higher totals possible about elevated areas around the north east highlands and Western Tiers.

Catchments in the north are saturated after significant rainfall in May and river rises are expected.

Minor to moderate flooding may develop in some northern and eastern river basins from Sunday onwards. Catchment specific flood warnings will be issued if and when required.

Flash flooding of small creeks and low lying areas may occur in locations that receive heavy rainfall on Sunday.

Note: This Flood Watch is a "heads up" for possible future flooding and is NOT a Flood Warning. The Bureau of Meteorology does not provide a flood warning service for all of the catchments covered by this flood watch.

Significant rainfall totals are expected to occur this Sunday and Monday in the north and east of Tasmania. The Bureau has issued a flood watch this afternoon and some flood warnings may be issued during the weekend.

Can I ask please your collaboration to increase the frequency of polling of DPIPWE stations shared with the Bureau for flood warning purposes from today, during the weekend and until Tuesday?

Thanks for your support with this request

Due to heavy rain in the Trevallyn catchment over the past 48 hours Hydro Tasmania is forecasting Lake Trevallyn to go on spill in the next 12 hours. In preparation for this Hydro Tasmania will be releasing 12 cubic metres per second down Cataract Gorge as a pre- emptive spill to warn the general public that an uncontrolled discharge event will be occurring in the next 12 hours.

Initial indicators suggest this will be a significant spill event.

Thanks Jeff for letting us know. It seems suspicious for us as well but given the severity of the rainfall event it is great to get this kind of feedback/confirmation from your end.

PD: I did reply this message yesterday but it did not go through my server. Thanks again.

Hi , I don't believe the level value at the DPIPWE Mersey River@ Shale Road (Latrobe) site is accurate. I did some research and found some survey information that shows that the corner of the shed concrete slab has a surveyed RL (reduced level) of 11.710m. Given that the current data is showing almost 16.700m RL means that the shed would be completely submerged by around some 3 metres of water. Given that the equipment would fail and no data could be returned, and we are still receiving data, means that the shed is in fact, not submerged.

As I have stated, this is my belief, but as we cannot get to the site it cannot be categorically confirmed. DPIPWE will endeavour to access the site soon after the flood waters have subsided to survey the flood debris level to confirm a maximum flood level and check the instrumentation.

Hi I have had a look at the North Esk@ Ballroom record for max stage

The 1929 value was 3.8m in April. The issue with this will be it is a daily read value so depending on the time of reading it may or may not be the actual maximum height. The other issue will be where this is related to as a bench mark which would need to be checked. There has been a value higher of 3.9m in August 2005. Yesterday's reading was 4.383 m but is likely to need some verification. Hope this assists Bryce

From: Whittington, John (DPIPWE) Sent: Wednesday, 8 June 2016 9:56 AM To: DPIPWE - All Staff- DPIPWE Subject: Flood Event

Colleagues

As you are aware, Tasmania has been experiencing extreme weather conditions resulting in significant flooding. To date police and emergency services have borne the brunt of the response to this event while our priority has been the safety of staff and promoting messages to the public.

Looking ahead, DPIPWE's major role will be in assessment and recovery. Our main focus is on the agricultural sector with AgriGrowth TasmaniaRTI-DL-RELEASE-DPIPWE leading the work here. Loss of livestock, fence damage and power outages are just a few of the issues the agricultural industry is currently facing. Once floodwaters recede, staff will move from desktop assessments to on-ground work as part of Government's impact assessment response.

Biosecurity Tasmania has been promoting animal welfare messages to the public and is standing by to provide advice on flood-affected animals.

Some of our National Parks are closed to the public and they are being publicised on the PWS Facebook page and website. We will also be looking at remote infrastructure and environment in the coming week, once it is safe to do so.

The Environmental Protection Authority is working with the Department of Health and Human Services, Councils, Hydro and TasWater to address contaminated waters and deal with waste management matters.

For all emergency information including flood warnings, road closures and public health warnings, see the TasAlert website at www.alert.tas.gov.au while DPIPWE's website has been updated to draw together information relevant to our role in assessment and recovery.

As the recovery planning process progresses, additional staff resources may be called up depending on the nature of the Department's response. In all circumstances, and as always, safety is paramount. Please adhere to advice given by police and emergency services during this event.

Regards

Hi Martin, I have spoken to the works supervisor from Meander Valley Council and he is keen to have any retrievable equipmentRTI-DL-RELEASE-DPIPWE removed today in order to repair the roadway around the bridge abutment. I have also just spoken to James and he is on his way to see if that can be safely done. If it is not safe then I believe that the council should remove the infrastructure as they see fit i.e excavate, which is likely to destroy any of the equipment inside the shed. For all we know it has probably been destroyed by the flood inundation anyway. I will keep you posted
