Sundakphu Trek – Darjeeling Sundakphu Trek – Darjeeling Sandakphu trek is beautified by the local villages of Darjeeling district and Nepal. It’s a border line trek between India and Nepal, and we keep swinging between the regions and villages of Nepal and India. The best part of it is, its an easy trek and considered the best of the Himalayan routes to start a multi-day trek in the Himalayas. Sandakphu at 3636 meters is also the highest point of West Bengal - India. No other treks in India can boast of what Sandakphu Phalut trek can offer. The view from Sandakphu is unsurpassed by any view anywhere with grand views of four of the World's highest 8000 meter peaks - Mt. Everest (8850m, 1st), Kanchenjunga (8586m, 3rd), Mt. Lhotse (8516m, 4th) and Makalu (8481m, 5th). Upon arrival check in the hotel. Overnight stay in Delhi. Meals: N/A Day 02: Sun. 17 Feb’19 Delhi – Bagdogra - Darjeeling Flight & Drive Morning after breakfast transfer to domestic airport to board flight to Bagdogra. Upon arrival proceed to Darjeeling 2045 M (drive 70 km) the famous tea state of India. Rest of the day free at leisure. Overnight stay in hotel in Darjeeling. Meal: - Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner Day 03: Mon. 18 Feb’19 Darjeeling (Sightseeing) After breakfast we drive to happy valley tea Garden. Later we visit to the famous Himalayan Mountaineering Institute which has a museum specializing on the various expeditions on peaks of the Himalayas and an exclusive Everest Museum which tells us the history along with its expeditions to Everest. Later Enjoy toy train ride (ticket is subject to availability). After Lunch Ghum Monastery (Yiga Choling Buddhist Monastery) which has the image of Maitreya Buddha (the future coming Buddha) and drive back to Darjeeling and visit the upper market. Later drive back to the hotel for overnight stay. Meal: - Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner Day 04: Tue. 19 Feb’19 Darjeeling - Maneybhanjang - Tumling Drive & Trek 11 Km After breakfast drive to Maneybhanjang the starting point of the trek. The days walk, about 06 hrs, is uphill and the trail passes through small village of Chitre and forests of Rhododendrons and Magnolias. Overnight at Tumling. Overnight stay at Lodge or tent. Meal: - Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner Day 05: Wed. 20 Feb’19 Tonglu/Tumling – Kalipokhri (2970m) Trek 9 Km /04 hrs After breakfast we undertake a pleasant walk through the forest which is home to the rare Red Panda and the Tragopan. Dinner and overnight at Kalipokhrii. Overnight stay at Lodge or tent. Meal: - Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner Day 06: Thu. 21 Feb’19 Kalipokhari – Sandakphu (3636 M) Trek 6 Km Sandakphu Trek continues. After breakfast, start the trek to Sandakphu (3636m) which takes about 06 hrs. On a clear day one can see the peaks of Lhotse (8501m), Everest (8848m) and Makalu (8475m) of the Nepal Himalayas and the huge Kanchenjanga massif (8586m) along with other peaks of the Sikkim Himalayas. overnight stay in tents at Sandakphu. Meal: - Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner Day 07: Fri. 22 Feb’19 Sandakphu – Molly/Phalut (2300 M) Trek 14 Km On this day of Sandakphu Trek, Molly’s Trekker’s Hut – 14 Km. After walking for a little while the trekker will be followed by the Everest group on the left and Kanchenjunga range right ahead. A walk of about 4.5 hrs. from Sandakphu the trekker will come across a stone house with blown of roof on the top of a small ridge. The place is known as Sabarkum and is 14 km from Sandakphu. Molly to Phalut Top 8 Km. Overnight at Molly or Phalut. Overnight stay at Lodge/Homestay. Meal: - Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner [email protected] +911141322940 www.shikhar.com Day 08: Sat. 23 Feb’19 Molly/Phalut – Gorkhey (1950 M) Trek 18 Km Molly to Phalut Top 8 Km Keeping the ridge on the left follow the trail north ward. After about an hour the trail begins to climb through a series of zigzag till one reaches Trekkers’ Hut. From here Phalut summit is about 20 minutes walk. A magnificent view of snowy range is obtained from the summit which is also tri-junction of Sikkim, West Bengal and Nepal. After Lunch trek to Gorkhey. Gorkhey, a beautiful valley in the border of West Bengal and Sikkim. Upon arrival check in Lodge or tent for overnight stay. Meal: - Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner Day 09: Sun. 24 Feb’19 Gorkhey – Rimbick – Darjeeling Trek 14 Km and Drive Today would be the last day of your trek; you will walk from Gorkhey to Srikhola to Rimbik. En- route you shall pass through quaint hamlets and their farmlands. After reaching Rimbik board in the waiting vehicle and drive to Darjeeling. Upon arrival in Darjeeling check in the hotel overnight stay. Meal: - Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner Day 10: Mon. 25 Feb’19 Darjeeling - Bagdogra - Delhi Flight & Drive 70 Km Morning after early breakfast leave for Bagdogra airport.     Chapter I Historical Geography and Demography of Colonial Northern Bengal The present chapter seeks to historicize the geographical transformations and ecological vulnerabilities during the colonial periods in northern Bengal. The chapter also intends to explain the demographic transformations of northern Bengal shaped by the environmental factors and natural disasters occurred during the period of the study. Apart from the geographical and demographical changes the chapter will also focus on the political construction of the northern Bengal districts which had gone through several territorial and administrative adjustments and transfers of lands among each other even in the first half of the twentieth century. In order to analyse the geographical characteristics, the river system, change of river course and formation of new lands seemed to be the most decisive factor for the geographical construction of the region. Northern Bengal had a great variety of topographical structures which extended from the Darjeeling Himalayan ranges to the riverine inundated agricultural tracts. Niharranjan Ray, while describing the northern boundary of Bengal, has argued that the north of Bengal is bounded up by the Sikkim and the snowy Himalayan peak of Kanchenjungha below which there are Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling districts.1 The districts of Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and the State of Cooch Behar were overwhelmingly populated by the hilly tribes viz. Lepcha, Limbu, Koch, Rajbanshi, and Bhutia; and the north-eastern boundary in the ancient time was extended up to the Brahmaputra river which demarcated the eastern and western boundary of Pundrabardhan and Kamrup State respectively.2 H. Rural Vulnerability and Tea Plantation Migration in Eastern Nepal and Darjeeling Sarah Besky Department of Anthropology University of Wisconsin – Madison This paper will analyze migration from rural eastern Nepal to tea plantations in eastern Nepal and Darjeeling and the potentials such migration might represent for coping with rural vulnerability and food scarcity. I will contextualize this paper in a regional history of agricultural intensification and migration, which began in the eighteenth century with Gorkhali conquests of today’s Mechi region and continued in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the recruitment of plantation laborers from Nepal to British India. For many Kiranti ethnic groups, agricultural intensification resulted in social marginalization, land degradation due to over-population and over-farming, and eventual migration to Darjeeling to work on British tea plantations. The British lured Rais, Limbus, and other tribal peoples to Darjeeling with hopes of prosperity. When these migrants arrived, they benefited from social welfare like free housing, health care, food rations, nurseries, and plantation schools – things unknown to them under Nepal’s oppressive monarchal regime.

INTRODUCTION: 1.1 Darjeeling District has four Sub-Division namely Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong and Siliguri. Three Sub-Division are located in hill region and are is in plan. Kurseong is one of the hill Sub-Division with longitude and latitude as 880 17m East and 260 53m North respectively. 1.2 Historical perspective - In the year 1835 Darjeeling was selected and acquired by the then British India Govt. for the purpose of establishing health sanatorium and summer residence for their officers and the soldiers. The first road to Darjeeling via Kurseong was constructed from Titalya, which is also known as Military Road, as it was also meant for the Military purposes. But it has remained unplayable for the last five or six decades due to non maintenance and on constructing one more road, Hill Cart Road now known as Tenzing Norgay Road, connecting the plains of Bengal with Darjeeling via hilly sub-stations viz. Tindharia, Kurseong, Sonada and Ghoom. As far as the history goes, Darjeeling area including Kurseong was a part of Sikkim and it was in the year 1835 leased to the British India Govt. by the then Rajan of Sikkim on yearly remuneration. The original inhabitants of Kurseong and Darjeeling were the Lepchas and the word ‘Kharsang’ now known as Kurseong comes from the Lepcha word, meaning ‘The land of White Orchids’: botanically known as Ceologeny, which grows abundantly in the trees and rock crevasses here. 1.3 Background of Kurseong Municipality – Kurseong Municipality was established in the year 1879.
