College (W), Madurai- 625 002 Abstract The place of Thanjavur in Tamilnadu (South India) has a long past history, fertile region and capital of many kingdoms. Thanjavur was a part of the kingdom of the Sangam Cholas. Later Thanjavur was ruled by the Kalabhras, the Pallavas and the Imperial Cholas. Then it was for a short period under the rule of the Pandyas and Vijayanagar Kings who appointed Sevappa Nayak as a viceroy of Thanjavur. Keywords: Thanjavur, Sangam, Kalabhras, Pandyas, Vijayanagar, Pallavas, Marathas, Chattrapathy Shivaji Establishment of Marathas power in Thanjavur Sevappa Nayak (1532-1560) was the founder of Thanjavur Nayak dynasty.1 Vijayaraghava (1634-1674) the last king of this dynasty, lost his life in a battle with Chokkanatha Nayak of Madurai in the year 1662. The Madurai Nayak appointed Alagiri, as the Governor of Thanjavur. This was followed by a long civil war in the Thanjavur kingdom. Alagiri wanted to rule independently and it restrained the relationship between Alagiri and Chokkanatha Nayak. Sengamaladas was the infant son of Vijayaraghava. Venkanna the Rayasam of Vijayaragava desired to make Sengamaladas as the Nayak of Thanjavur and sought the help of Bijapur Sultan who send Ekoji alias Venkogi to capture Thanjavur. He defeated Alagiri and crowned Sengamaladas. But, Venkanna did not get any benefit from Sengamaladas. So he induced Ekoji to usurp the power and got victory. Thus, in 1676 Ekoji established Maratha rule in the Tamil country. -

INTERVIEW “I cannot live without music” Swati Tirunal was undoubtedly one of the most important modern composers, one who included Hindustani styles in his compositions. Nowadays it has become fashionable to say you must avoid Hindustani in Carnatic music or the other way around. But looking back, Bhimsen Joshi was among those south Indians who became luminaries in the north Indian style. How many south Indians are really open to Hindustani music is debatable. The late M.S. Gopalakrishnan was very competent in the Hindustani field, and my colleague Sanjay Subrahmanyan is a Carnatic musician open to Hindustani ragas – he sings a Rama Varma at the Swarasadhana workshop focussing on Swati Tirunal’s compositions pallavi in Bagesree, for instance. Then again there are ‘fundamentalist’ groups Well known Carnatic vocalist Rama Varma was in Chennai recently to who think Behag, Sindhubhairavi, conduct a two-day workshop (9 and 10 February 2013) Swarasadhana, Yamunakalyani, Sivaranjani and their at the Satyananda Yoga Centre at Triplicane. Here he speaks of the event, ilk should be totally done away with. his journey in classical music and his thoughts on the changing trends of the art form. Carnatic Music vs. Western Music: A Comparison by Maya Anand Many music rasikas are familiar with the phrase “music is music” or “all music is the same”. However, as a student of both Western Classical music and Carnatic music, I am able to identify a few fundamental differences in the two styles of music. While it is true that all music is fundamentally similar to some extent, it is important, and quite frankly, interesting to take time to compare the striking contrasts between genres of music. This isn’t to say that Carnatic music and Western music don’t share anything in common. There are definitely similarities in pitch and rhythm, which are the first things that one must understand about any type of music. Pitch is an important aspect in any type of music, and this rings true in both Western and Carnatic music as well. There are many things similar about the basics of these two musical genres. Firstly, both of them have seven notes in their scale. In Western music, that scale is Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, and Ti. In Carnatic music, the scale is Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, and Ni. Already, it is evident that these solfa syllables resemble each other greatly, further demonstrating that all music probably derived from the same concepts. The similarity doesn’t end there. Not only are these differing styles of music similar in pitch, they are also similar in rhythm. In Western Classical music, there is something called a time signature. The time signature of a piece of music is similar to what we call tala in Carnatic music. -

Temple Music Traditions in Hindu South India: Periya Mēḷam and Its Performance Practice Yoshitaka Terada The whole place, too, was filled with the horrid din of tomtoms, and the shrill noise of pipes, reverberating through the weird gloom of the passages, and giving one quite an uncanny feeling. (Mitchell 1885, 140–1) The sounds produced by these instruments are far from pleasing, and may even appear hideous to European ears. (Dubois 1906/1986, 587) During the festival nights of Ani Tirumanjanam and Arudra Darsanam, I have lingered for hours at a stretch at the corners of the main car streets, in the thrall of Nadasvaram music of Chidambaram Vaidyanathan of revered memory . Ever since my boyhood, when I heard it first, nothing has stirred me to the depths of my being as much as Chidambaram Vaidyanathan’s Mallari in the raga, Nattai–played traditionally when Nataraja and Sivakama are taken out in procession during the festivals. (Natarajan 1974, 137) The unfamiliar music flowing inside and around the Hindu temples has caught the attention of many inquisitive European travelers to South India for centuries. Their reactions to these sounds were mixed with bewilderment and uneasiness at best, and usually characterized by impulsive criticism and naive ethnocen- trism. Mrs. Murray Mitchell, the wife of an English missionary, gives a typical example of European reaction when she describes the music she heard in 1882 at the famous Minakshi Temple in Madurai as shown in the first quotation. For Mitchell, the music, sounded as “horrid din” and “shrill noise,” was incompre- hensive and threatening. -

I gave a very provocative title to this lecture about the Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji’s Sarasvati Mahal Library partly for raising your curiosity but as I list some of its treasures, you will understand how perfectly apt it is that I should call it India’s best-kept secret. K. NARAYAN was born on October 10, 1906, in Madras, South India, and educated there and at Maharaja’s College in Mysore. His first novel, Swami and Friends (1935), and its successor, The Bachelor of Arts (1937), are both set in the fictional territory of Malgudi, of which John Updike wrote, “Few writers since Dickens can match the effect of colorful teeming that Narayan’s fictional city of Malgudi conveys; its population is as sharply chiseled as a temple frieze, and as endless, with always, one feels, more characters round the corner.” Narayan wrote many more novels set in Malgudi, including The English Teacher (1945), The Financial Expert (1952), and The Guide (1958), which won him the Sahitya Akademi (India’s National Academy of Letters) Award, his country’s highest honor. His collections of short fiction include A Horse and Two Goats, Malgudi Days, and Under the Banyan Tree. Graham Greene, Narayan’s friend and literary champion, said, “He has offered me a second home. Le Conchiglie ...un triton immane che con la cava sua cerulea conca tremar si facea e i liti intorno. …l’armata etrusca – lo porta un gran tritone che del mare l’azzurra stesa assorda con la conca… Eneide libro V 47 Abbiamo fin qui parlato di strumenti musicali per conoscere, in linea di massima, il loro funzionamento, le loro suddivisioni ed avere contezza di quando e dove alcuni oggetti assunsero tale funzione. Adesso parliamo della conchiglia utilizzata come strumento musicale. Innanzi tutto bisogna sapere che la conchiglia usata come strumento musicale è quella di alcuni Gasteropodi, cioè di una conchiglia unica, a torciglione e di discrete dimensioni. Vengono normalmente usate quelle di Turbinella pyrum (o Xancus pyrum), Charonia tritonis e Charonia nodifera (lampas lampas), Strombus goliath e Strombus gigas, Busycon perversus, Syrinx aruanus, Cassis cornuta e tante altre che per le loro dimensioni possono assolvere al servizio di “tromba” . La conchiglia è una costruzione in carbonato di calcio (CaCo3) posta a protezione o a sostegno di alcune famiglie di invertebrati Gasteropodi. Ha forme e colori diversissimi caratterizzanti la specie che la produce. Le conchiglie possono essere usate come aerofono (tromba) e come idiofono (nei Crepitacoli). “La conchiglia del mare ha con se il suono dei venti e dell’ onde; e dell’acque profonde conserva segreti e misteri, che soltanto racconta a chi sa sognare. E il canto soave di una sirena che la si nasconde incanta chiunque la sappia ascoltare , quella voce suadente, che viene dal mare”. Dalla mitologia greca rileviamo che la conchiglia veniva usata come tromba, difatti Tritone, figura mitologica, figlio di Poseidone dio 49 del mare e della nereide Antifritite, aveva un corno di conchiglia che col suo suono calmava la tempesta e annunciava l’arrivo del mare. -

Classification of Indian Musical Instruments With the general background and perspective of the entire field of Indian Instrumental Music as explained in previous chapters, this study will now proceed towards a brief description of Indian Musical Instruments. Musical Instruments of all kinds and categories were invented by the exponents of the different times and places, but for the technical purposes a systematic-classification of these instruments was deemed necessary from the ancient time. The classification prevalent those days was formulated in India at least two thousands years ago. The first reference is in the Natyashastra of Bharata. He classified them as ‘Ghana Vadya’, ‘Avanaddha Vadya’, ‘Sushira Vadya’ and ‘Tata Vadya’.1 Bharata used word ‘Atodhya Vadya’ for musical instruments. The term Atodhya is explained earlier than in Amarkosa and Bharata might have adopted it. References: Some references with respect to classification of Indian Musical Instruments are listed below: 1. Bharata refers Musical Instrument as ‘Atodhya Vadya’. Vishnudharmotta Purana describes Atodhya (Ch. XIX) of four types – Tata, Avnaddha, Ghana and Sushira. Later, the term ‘Vitata’ began to be used by some writers in place of Avnaddha. 2. According to Sangita Damodara, Tata Vadyas are favorite of the God, Sushira Vadyas favourite of the Gandharvas, whereas Avnaddha Vadyas of the Rakshasas, while Ghana Vadyas are played by Kinnars. 3. Bharata, Sarangdeva (Ch. VI) and others have classified the musical instruments under four heads: 1 Fundamentals of Indian Music, Dr. Swatantra Sharma , p-86 53 i. Tata (String Instruments) ii. Avanaddha (Instruments covered with membrane) iii. Sushira (Wind Instruments) iv. Ghana (Solid, or the Musical Instruments which are stuck against one another, such as Cymbals).
