  • Zayat: American Pharoah to Run in Travers
Zayat: American Pharoah to Run in Travers By Ron Mitchell Courtesy BloodHorse.com Photo: Chad Harmon American Pharoah Owner Ahmed Zayat said he would like to see Triple Crown winner American Pharoah make his next start in the Travers Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 29 at Saratoga Race Course because it would help define the colt's legacy if he were to win the "Midsummer Derby." "I have made it very clear that I want to go to the Travers," Zayat said Aug. 4, two days after the 3-year-old homebred son of Pioneerof the Nile won his eighth straight race, all in stakes, with an impressive victory in the $1.75 million William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) at Monmouth Park. "We are motivated by what defines his legacy. If it's up to me, it would be the Travers. I have made my desires known to my trainer. He knows what I want." With only one loss in nine starts and earnings of more than $5.6 million for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, American Pharoah is expected to make one more start before the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I). The Classic, at Keeneland on Oct. 31, would likely be the career finale before he is retired to Ashford Stud, owned by Irish-based Coolmore Stud. Zayat said American Pharoah's next starts is contingent upon the colt training well, remaining happy, and maintaining the conditioning that saw him sweep the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum Brands, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes Presented by DraftKings, all grade I, previous to the Haskell.

TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 2019 IN FLANDERS FIELDS THE POPPIES GROW PIONEEROF THE NILE by Earle Mack DEAD AT 13 In the wake of the death of 22 Thoroughbreds at Santa Anita, Belinda Stronach and The Stronach Group have taken the bold action to ban race-day Lasix, including more stringent regulations on painkillers and more transparency in veterinary records. I believe these reforms, implemented correctly, will substantially enhance the sport=s integrity, and by extension the very future of horse racing. For the past 50 years, as an owner, breeder, administrator and operator, the use of Lasix has been one of the most controversial and complex topics that has faced the sport of Thoroughbred racing. These reforms have been proposed before and are under attack again today. In the history of racing, many advocates of reform have been laid to rest in a veritable "Flanders Fields" of heroes. American Pharoah From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia American Pharoah (foaled February 2, 2012) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the American Triple Crown in 2015. He is bred and owned by Ahmed Zayat of Zayat Stables, LLC, trained by Bob Baffert American Pharoah and ridden in most of his races by Victor Espinoza. He is the first American Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 and only the twelfth in history. The American Triple Crown was won by American Pharoah in a wire-to-wire victory at the Belmont Stakes, following earlier victories at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. After running poorly in his track debut, he was undefeated thereafter. As a two-year-old, he won the Grade I Del Mar Futurity and FrontRunner Stakes, each by several lengths. An injury kept him out of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, but the strength of his two wins nonetheless resulted in him being voted American Champion Two-Year-Old Male Horse at the 2014 Eclipse Awards. American Pharoah began his 2015 campaign with wins in the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby and went on to win both the 2015 Kentucky Derby and 2015 Preakness Stakes. Prior to the 2015 Belmont Stakes, Zayat announced that he had sold breeding rights to the colt to the Ashford Stud in Kentucky, a division of Ireland's Coolmore Stud. He retained control over the colt though, and his racing career which included an undisclosed dividend on stud fees. Zayat said he expected American Pharoah to retire from racing at the end of 2015.
