These are 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke for both men and women. CHANGES SINCE THE RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES The following events have been added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic programme: • Men's 800m freestyle • Women's 1500m freestyle • Mixed 4x100m medley relay SPORT RULES AND PROCEDURES The swimming competitions at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be held in accordance with the rules of the FINA handbook (2017-2021) and the Olympic Charter which is in force at the time of the competition. Pursuant to the Olympic Charter, FINA assumes the responsibility for the technical control and direction of its sport at the Olympic Games. The technical officials for the competitions will be the FINA bureau (jury of appeal), the FINA technical swimming committee (TSC) commission and judges from FINA affiliated federations. A commission shall be appointed consisting of the swimming technical delegate and the chairman and honorary secretary of the FINA technical swimming committee. Tie Break rules For individual and relay events ties for the last qualification or reserve position (from heats and semifinals) may be broken by swim-offs. The swim-off is treated as an additional phase. Otherwise, there are no tie-breaking rules for ranking. Penalties/disqualification rules The most common reasons for individual disqualification are false starts and illegal touches or kicks in breaststroke or butterfly. In relays, a common infraction is an early start during the exchange as detected by timing equipment. Protests/appeals Protests may be filed against decisions taken by referees. The jury of appeal is the FINA bureau. You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme.
