Gingrich Aphra Shemza Maria Almena ART IN FLUX ART IN FLUX ART IN FLUX London, UK London, UK London, UK [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Media Arts has long been regarded as a niche within the contemporary art discourse, secluded from the art market and from the public alike. As technology becomes more accessible, these former boundaries erode. While the art market slowly starts to embrace new media artists, local communities show a renewed interest in the power of technologically-facilitated art, due to its participatory nature. How do professional media artists make a living outside of the constraints of the contemporary art market? How can local communities and the public profit from media art? Media Art. Networks. ART IN FLUX. Community Art. Community Engagement. 1. INTRODUCTION of contemporary art, as well as the educational potential of media arts for local communities. Over the last 4 years ART IN FLUX has provided a major platform for media artists in the UK. What started as a platform by artists for artists, turned into public-facing activities that involve the general public as much as local communities. In recent years, ART IN FLUX developed workshops that invited local residents in North Kensington to work together on a collaborative digital art piece in the project AYAH - Sign. ART IN FLUX orchestrated workshops with Stuart Batchelor that were shown at ACAVA’s Maxilla Space, before they were offered to the general public at the V&A Museum. This year, ART IN FLUX is on the cusp of developing a workshop series that draws from the experience of media arts practitioners, while applying the model of participatory practices to workshops. -
The Barbican's Series of Free Installations Continues in 2018
For immediate release: Thursday 26 April 2018 The Barbican’s series of free installations continues in 2018 The Barbican has announced a series of free installations as part of its Level G programme featuring work from Troika, Rachel Ara, In the Dark and Falling Tree Productions, Cityscapes with Heywood & Condie and Seth Scott with Hannah Bruce & Co. Borrowed Light by Troika, an artificial infinite loop of sunset and sunrise inspired by moving panoramas. American Beauty (a Trump L'oeil) by Rachel Ara feat. Kay Le Seelleur Ara is a work that references film history, utopian architecture and contemporary politics. Visitors watch as an orange hairpiece dances in the wind around the Barbican Estate, echoing the iconic scene from American Beauty. Soundhouse – The Listening Body by In the Dark and Falling Tree Productions present a collective listening experience designed to provoke the imagination and stimulate the senses. The Hull of a Large Ship explores the Barbican Arts Centre’s original drawings with contributions by five architecture firms. Breathe: A Green Lung by Cityscapes with Heywood & Condie, continues at the Barbican and reflects upon the interactions between people and the plants that are essential for creating healthier cities. Edgelands by Seth Scott with Hannah Bruce & Co returns to the Barbican, inviting visitors to explore, examine, and reimagine the edgelands of this iconic building. Previously known as the foyers, Level G is the Barbican’s public space where visitors can see art for free, relax and enjoy the iconic building. The Level G programme is dedicated to transforming this public space with installations, exhibitions, talks and events. -

This catalogue showcases Lumen’s third annual awards and exhibition which were selected in 2014 and travelled globally in 2014/15. To be part of Lumen, artists from around the world submit work made on electronic devices, such as smart phones, tablets, 3D printers and computers using apps, software or original coding. The longlist of 100 works become the Lumen Online Gallery where a public vote for the People’s Choice Award takes place. The shortlist tours the world as the Lumen Prize Exhibition. -
Barbican July Highlights
For immediate release: Tuesday 29 May 2018 Barbican July highlights Barry Humphries and cabaret diva Meow Meow are accompanied onstage by London’s Aurora Orchestra in a risqué and seductive tribute to the jazz-infused music of the Weimar Republic. Juan de Marcos González leads the Afro-Cuban All Stars in a rare UK appearance at the Barbican on 15 July 2018. Two Canadian creative powerhouses, Godspeed! You Black Emperor and The Holy Body Tattoo, bring their music and dance performance monumental to London for the first time. The feminist horror film collective, The Final Girls, present a season of films with convention-defying women at the centre. The first UK survey of American documentary photographer Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) and first major UK solo exhibition of British contemporary photographer Vanessa Winship continue in the Barbican Art Gallery. CINEMA Beatles Yellow Submarine: 50th Anniversary Screening Sun 8 Jul 2018, Cinema 2, 6pm The Beatles’ legendary animated hit film Yellow Submarine is returning to cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 8 July 2018. The Final Girls present: Unholy Women Tue 3–Tue 17 Jul 2018, Cinemas 1 & 3 The feminist horror film collective present a season of films with convention-defying women at the centre. Confined, either physically or emotionally, they challenge established notions of femininity, control and hysteria. New Releases Barbican Cinema is delighted to showcase a slate of new films in July, including: the hotly awaited Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, a sequel to the smash hit musical, Whitney by Kevin Macdonald, Generation Wealth by Lauren Greenfield, Tracking Edith by Peter Stephan Jungk, and Mary Shelley from Haifaa Al-Mansour (director of the award winning hit Wadjda). -
