For Immediate Release February 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FEBRUARY 2017 JASON ISBELL AND THE 400 UNIT RETURN TO THE ROAD WITH EXTENSIVE SUMMER TOUR IN JUNE AND JULY ISBELL FINISHING FOLLOW UP TO GRAMMY AWARD WINNING ALBUM SOMETHING MORE THAN FREE Nashville, TN – Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter/guitarist Jason Isbell and his stellar band the 400 Unit have announced the first leg of an extensive US summer tour starting on June 17 in Asheville, NC. Isbell and company will headline major venues, some for the first time including the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD and the PNC Pavilion in Cincinnati, OH. Following two triumphant sold-out nights at New York’s Beacon Theatre in 2016, the group will return to the famed venue for a three-night stand June 22-24, along with a three- night stand at Austin’s ACL Live at the Moody Theatre July 14-16. See full list of US and European tour dates below. Isbell is putting the final touches on his highly anticipated follow up to 2015’s two- time Grammy Award winning album Something More Than Free. Isbell recorded the album at the legendary RCA Studio A in Nashville with Grammy Award- winner Dave Cobb returning as producer. Cobb produced Something More Than Free and Isbell’s acclaimed breakthrough album Southeastern (2013). The new, yet-to-be-titled collection will officially be the first Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit album since 2011’s critically acclaimed Here We Rest. The mighty 400 Unit is: Derry deBorja (keyboards), Chad Gamble (drums), Jimbo Hart (bass) and Sadler Vaden (guitar). Look for the announcement of the spring/summer release soon. Isbell recently posted this Teaser Clip on his Twitter. For Record Store Day on April 22, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit will release the special vinyl only Live from Welcome To 1979. The album features six songs, with five covers, performed live at Welcome To 1979 studio in Nashville and recorded directly onto lacquer. The tracks include The Rolling Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” and ‘Sway”, John Prine’s “Storm Windows”, Candi Staton’s “Heart On A String”, Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” and Isbell’s own “Never Gonna Change”. Today’s guest, producer extraordinaire Dave Cobb. DAVE COBB When we approach these records we approach it much the way a record would’ve been done in 1965, 1970. And it’s humans playing together. There are mistakes all over the record. There’s timing issues, there’s tuning issues, there’s pitch issues, there’s flubs of words. The same way people are seeking out organically grown food, I think people are seeking out organically grown music at the same time. The moment I heard Chris Stapleton I was like, “Man I’ve got to track him down.” If I can just get to Nashville I’d run into him and I’d run into Jason Isbell and try to sucker them in to make records. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. Walk in and see what’s going to grab you that day. To me it was a really cool thing about linking really great artists that I like now, and linking Nashville, what Nashville is today. Taking kind of a snapshot of it. And I love it when I get to introduce somebody to somebody else I think is talented. And you see there eyes both sparkle. And I love the unity in the scene. That’s why I moved here.     Austin Lucas Biography April 2016 When Austin Lucas began thinking about the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2013 album, Stay Reckless, he had a lot on his mind. The Indiana troubadour wanted to do something not only different from his own previous work, but unlike anything else happening in the realm of country and Americana. Between The Moon And The Midwest marries traditional and cosmic country sounds with sharp, vivid storytelling in a fully realized concept album. "The songs for the new record began to emerge back in 2011 leading up to the sessions for Stay Reckless," Lucas says. "It was a tumultuous time in my life. I was on the road virtually nonstop, and my marriage was falling apart. To cope with everything, I started pouring all the pain I was experiencing into these fictionalized characters. Really, I was trying to avoid reflecting on the state of my personal life." Two years later, Lucas was deeper into the void, battling crippling bouts of anxiety and depression. Out of desperation, he returned to the old character-driven songs he'd written and shelved, this time with an even darker perspective. Drawing on his life experiences in rural Indiana, Lucas began crafting an intimate song cycle that captured the intricacies of friendship, love and betrayal. “Writing these songs was therapy through escapism,” Lucas says. “By using characters, I accidentally created an environment where I could speak openly—oftentimes about things that were buried more deeply than I’d normally express. For example, the spiraling depression that cast a shadow over the final months of writing and recording the album.

    If you want to know how to cure a hangover, ask a musician, especially one who has recently been in rehab. “Pedialyte, that’s what you need,” Jason Isbell told me. He was standing outside a recording studio in suburban Nashville, lighting a cigarette. “It’s the stuff you give kids who are dehydrated from diarrhea. It’s like 10 Gatorades in one bottle.” Isbell is big and gregarious — he’s 6-1, 200 pounds — with wary, deep-set blue eyes that flash and size you up at the same time. On this early afternoon in February, those eyes were puffy and red-rimmed. He had only three days to finish “Southeastern,” his new album. He had four days until his wedding. Like Ray Liotta in the third act of “Goodfellas,” he was manic and barely sleeping. “Coffee and adrenaline,” he said. “They’ll see me through.” In the old days, this kind of stress would have sent Isbell, who is 34, into a tailspin. He found fame early and wasn’t ready for it. When he was 22, he joined the Drive-By Truckers, the brilliant and hard-living Alabama band. He quickly wrote several of the group’s signature songs, including the title cut of its 2003 album, “Decoration Day,” and a beautiful bummer of a tune called “Goddamn Lonely Love.” He almost as quickly burned out. His first marriage, to Shonna Tucker, the band’s bassist at the time, came unstitched in public. There were some ugly scenes. Isbell’s fondness for Jack Daniel’s did not become him.

Having hosted performances from many of the biggest and fastest-rising names in music, its Big Mouth Cave annually draws more than 50,000 visitors to experience concerts in a truly unique setting with natural acoustics and otherworldly beauty. However, like all other music venues in 2020, even this prehistoric site had to close its “mouth” for the current pandemic. But that didn’t stop Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit from kicking off The Caverns’ new COVID-compliant “Above Ground Concert Series” with a four-night run of outdoor shows on the grounds above the cave with an L-Acoustics K1/K2 system deployed by Escondido, California-based Sound Image.     Jason Isbell Southeastern Release date: June 11th / Southeastern Records “Beware all ventures which require new clothes, and not a new wearer of clothes.” - Henry David Thoreau Southeastern is not a record Jason has made before, and not simply because the glorious storm and drama of his band, the 400 Unit, is absent. They will tour together; it's not a break- up record, not an album of dissolving, but, rather, songs of discovery. And not at all afraid, not even amid the tears. Which is to say that he has grown up. That it has been a dozen years since he showed up at a party and left in the Drive-By Truckers' van with two travel days to learn their songs. And then taught them some of his songs in the bargain. Jason Isbell's solo career has seemed equally effortless, from Sirens of the Ditch (2007) to Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit (2009), through Here We Rest (2011) and last year's Live From Alabama. Loud records, unrepentantly southern, resplendent with careful songwriting. Songs which inspire and intimidate other musicians, and critics. “ A heart on the run / keeps a hand on the gun / can't trust anyone,” Jason sings just now, his words brushing gently atop an acoustic guitar figure “Cover Me Up,” the song with which he has chosen to open Southeastern. Such tenderness. An act of contrition, an affirmation of need, his voice straining not to break: “Girl leave your boots by the bed / We ain't leaving this room / Till someone needs medical help / Or the magnolias bloom.” He sighs into the phone, considering what he's done, and why.

    By Lloyd Sachs Even more than (forgive the comparison) Billy Joel's "Honesty," Jason Isbell's "Anxiety" is such a lonely tune. Nuzzled against his lover, the song's first-person narrator seems free of serious relationship worries. But the world around him – the Trumpian world, that is, in all its rotten injustices and imbalances – has him feeling like he's trapped in a bad fantasy. "I'm wide awake and I'm in pain," he sings. If there's a word that best reflects Isbell's state of being these days, though, it's consistency. As has been widely reported and won't be rehashed here, he suffered through times of great tumult and inconsistency as a result of serious substance abuse – so serious it got him kicked out of Drive-By Truckers a decade ago, capping a six-year stint with the great Southern rock band. Now, having straightened himself out in impressive fashion, he's a model of dependability, priding himself on his ability to go out night after night with his 400 Unit and deliver a memorable show. The 38-year-old native of rural Alabama, who has always considered himself a guitar player "first and foremost," also is also proud of his continued growth as an instrumentalist. So it was a dream come true last July – a "huge event," as he put it – when Martin Guitar unveiled the Jason Isbell Signature Edition D-18.
