WINES ARGENTINA ARGENTINA Today, Argentina stands as the world’s fifth largest wine producer by volume, surpassed only by France, Italy, Spain and the United States. However, it was only recently that serious interest was expressed in the international market with respect to exportation. Argentine winegrowers understood that to become a major contender in the international wine market, product quality had to be improved. By reducing yields and improving winemaking techniques and equipment, Argentina has been steadily raising the quality of its wines which now command attention on the world market. Paramount wine regions of Argentina are situated in the western part of the country, scattered at various locations around the majestic Andes. They include the provinces of Mendoza, San Juan, La Rioja, Salta, Catamarca, Rio Negro and Neuquén. Climate conditions, with specific reference to temperature, sun exposure, annual rainfall and humidity, together with soil composition are key factors in wine production, and the main wine producing regions of Argentina are bestowed with these precise conditions necessary for growing top quality grapes. The Mendoza province generates more than 60% of all Argentine wine produced and is the source of an even higher percentage of total exports. Mendoza leads the way as the most important winegrowing region in Argentina and is the chief producer of Malbec, a purple grape variety used in making red wine, which rivals the French Malbec with respect to taste and quality. Argentina has found in Malbec its best expression, and it reigns as the flagship variety of the land. In the mid-19th century, French wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were introduced. In the early 1980’s, a renaissance began with the introduction of stainless steel fermentation tanks and the use of oak barrels for aging. Wine exports grew very quickly as the quality of wine production increased. The number of wineries has grown since then from 12 in 1995 to over 70 in 2005. Chile is now the fifth largest exporter of wines in the world, and the ninth largest producer of wine by volume. There are several aspects of Chile that makes it a unique winegrowing region. Firstly, and most importantly, Chile is capable of delivering high quality wines at low prices. The climate is influenced by the Pacific Currents, which results in little or no precipitation, dry summers and cold, rainy winters; premium conditions for cultivating grapes. Even better, the interaction between the sea and the Andes Mountains results in seasons that revel in bright sunny days and temperatures that take a dramatic dip each night, creating the broad daily temperature oscillation that wine grapes need to develop fresh fruit flavours, crisp acidity, and in the case of red wines, ripe tannins, deep colour and high levels of antioxidants. The most common grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenère. ERRAZURIZ WINERY Viña Errázuriz has been producing the highest quality Chilean wines for more than 130 years by harvesting the best grapes from selected regions of Chile. Don Maximiano Errázuriz founded Viña Errázuriz in 1870 in the Valle de Aconcagua, 100 kilometres north of the capital city, Santiago. Recognising that this valley with its cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes was ideal for growing grapes, Don Maximiano sent for the finest clones from France and transformed this barren land into a world-class vineyard. Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano’s descendant, Eduardo Chadwick. Eduardo is the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the wine business. Eduardo has overseen the modernisation of the winemaking technology at this historic estate while maintaining a distinct identity for its wines. Dedicated to producing estate grown wines of superior quality, Errázuriz has built a reputation as the “Best of Chile.” Errázuriz’s philosophy is best expressed by Don Maximiano who said, “From the best land, the best wine.” G7 WINERY G7, is a new Chilean range of wines originated as homage to seven generations of the del Pedregal family and their passion for producing high-quality and innovative wines. The family continues the legacy of Carlos Adolfo del Pedregal who arrived from Asturia, Spain and settled in the heart of the Loncomilla Valley. With a futuristic view and captivated by the warmth of this terroir, Carlos Adolfo planted his first vineyards in 1825, creating within the family a special sensitivity for the land, his vineyards and winemaking. After more than 180 years and seven generations of del Pedregal family, G7 was born as an answer to the dedication and pride taken in carrying on the family tradition of high-quality winemaking. 7 WINES CHILE Errazuriz
