Follow the A82 up Loch Lomond and past Tarbet and take the A83 through Inveraray towards Lochgilphead. Pass through the villages of Furness and Minard and about 1/3 of a mile south of Minard (opposite the entrance to Minard Castle) turn right up the private road to Barr House. Beyond Barr House the road continues to a private driveway leading to Limekiln Cottage. Situation Limekiln Cottage has a wonderful elevated position looking across Loch Fyne to the Cowal peninsula. The property is approximately 12 miles south of Inveraray. Minard is a sleepy west coast village with post office and primary school while Inveraray is a bustling yet charming town, occupying a lovely position beside Loch Fyne. Just north of Minard is Crarae Garden, a National Trust for Scotland property, noted for its exotic woodland and rhododendrons. Loch Fyne is famous worldwide, not just for its outstanding beauty but also for the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar which harvests the deep tidal waters of the sea loch to provide a sustainable supply of fresh fish and shellfish. Inveraray itself was built on the site of an earlier fishing village by the 3rd Duke of Argyll. In the mid 1700s he demolished the old village in favour of a grand castle and embarked on one of the most ambitious rebuilding programmes ever seen in the Western Highlands. The result is the classic 18th century planned village with straight, wide streets and dignified Georgian homes which remain today and also Inveraray Castle, still home to the Duke of Argyll. Inveraray offers many amenities including a primary school, post office, specialist shops and a range of professional services. Tourist attractions include the castle and the forbidding Inveraray Jail. A regular ferry crosses Loch Fyne between Tarbert (23 miles from Barr) to Portavadie. Portavadie Marina has grown significantly and now offers excellent boating facilities, restaurants and hotel accommodation. Some of Britain’s most spectacular scenery is found in this area of Scotland. There is superb hill walking and climbing, with the ’Rest and be Thankful‘ pass leading up through the Arrochar Alps which include four Munros (mountains over 3000 feet). It is also a renowned area for field sports, particularly stalking and shooting. Lochgilphead sits in a sheltered glen at the head of Lochgilp, an arm of Loch Fyne. The town originated as a fishing and market village but is now a prosperous hub for the area of Mid-Argyll. The town provides a variety of amenities and shops including a sports centre and library as well as the main primary and secondary schools. The local hospital is currently being extensively upgraded to provide an even better local service to the community. The neighbouring village of Ardrishaig is at the start of the Crinan Canal and is a popular destination for sailing and other watersports. The Crinan Canal provides a link from the Firth of Clyde to Crinan and the Sound of Jura to the Western Isles. The Campbells' contentious massacre at Glencoe of their rival MacDonalds in 1692 is long remembered, but their positive role in shaping modern Scotland cannot be overstated.

    INVERARAY JAIL - PRISONER RECORDS http://www.inverarayjail.co.uk/ USE THE EDIT / FIND ON TOOLBAR TO SEARCH NAMES and ENTRIES BY TOWN and VILLAGE By tradition and history 'the county town Argyll, Inveraray's courthouse and prisons, designed by James Gillespie Graham in 1813, after original plans by Robert Reid in 1807, opened in 1820 - Whilst Reid's original plans hadd included a courthouse and three prisons - one for males, one for females and one for debtors - The Prison Commissioners, lacking finances, had to be content with building only the courthouse and but one prison, eight cellss contained in its two floors - Following the 1839 Prisons (Scotland) Act, a second prison, separating men and women and designed by Thomas Brown of Edinburgh, was opened at the end of 1848, the new three-storied prison having twelve cells, an exercise gallery and a pair of outdoor exercise yards, the idea of separating male and female prisoners stemming from the somewhat misguided persuasion that such a system gave prisoners time to reflect upon their sins ! After the passing of the 1877 Prisons (Scotland) Act, the responsibility for the running and financing prisons taken away from local authorities, small local prisons were successively closed in favour of large prisons, such as Glasgow's 1882-built Barlinnie Prison and though Inveraray's jail, the last of the small prisons, was closed on August 31, 1889, courts continued to sit in Inveraray's courthouse until around 1954.4. After an extensive programme of restoration was undertaken by The Scottish Office in the 1980's, the building then lying empty for some years, Inveraray Jail was opened to the public as a 'visitor attraction' in May 1989 and the records of more than 4,000 of its Victorian prisoners put online for the interest of family history researchers.

Argyll covers the southwestern islands and western peninsulas of Scotland. While Ayrshire boundaries are well marked, Argyll is a bit more amorphous, encompassing a region that historically stretches into the Highlands. One of Ayrshire’s primary attractions is “Burns Country,” because the area was the poet Robert Burns’s birthplace as well as his predominant stomping grounds for most of his life.     Loch Fyne Marine Biosecurity Plan Developed in Partnership with the Stakeholders in Loch Fyne C2W Consulting Figure 1 Loch Fyne, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, UK 1 This plan was funded by Marine Scotland and has been developed by the users and community of Loch Fyne, Argyll, Scotland with the support of C2W Consulting. This plan is non-statutory, and all actions listed are undertaken on a voluntary basis. This biosecurity plan was developed in partnership with local stakeholders between November 2019 and April 2020. The Loch Fyne Biosecurity Plan covers the areas from the head of the loch near Cairndow, out to a seaward boundary loosely defined by a line from Ardlamont point in the east to Skipness point in the west. Principle Contractor Marine Scotland appointed Sarah Brown of C2W Consulting to deliver the community and stakeholder led biosecurity plan. 2 REPORTING What to do if you think you’ve seen Didemnum vexillum, the carpet sea-squirt 1. Don’t IGNORE IT! 2. Note the location, preferably using GPS, and take photographs of the colony if possible and safe to do so. Take photos both zoomed in and of the entire colony. 3. Contact Marine Scotland or CALL Scotland’s Environmental and Rural Services (SEARS) Helpline on 0845 230 2050. They will pass your report and photos onto Marine Scotland who will be able to respond quickly. 4. Adopt the precautionary approach and assume that it is D. vexillum until confirmed otherwise and follow best practice by not moving any material, stock or boats etc. from the site. 3 Executive Summary Didemnum vexillum, the invasive, non-native carpet sea squirt, has been found in three locations in Scotland, most recent of these is Loch Fyne in Argyll and Bute.
