Ennis Cathedral: The Building & Its People. Saturday 29th. August 2009 Presented by the Clare Roots Society Clare Roots Society The Clare Roots Society, brainchild of Ennisman Larry Brennan, was formed in April 2006 as an amateur family history group. The Society meets once a month in Ennis, and has approx. 50 members. Anyone with an interest in tracing their family tree is welcome to join. Some members are experienced genealogists while others are novices in the field. In addition to local members, we have some 'virtual' members who live overseas, but who follow our activities via email, and dream that they are in Clare. Activities are advertised in local press and in the Ennis Cathedral church bulletin. Under the Chairmanship of Declan Barron and his committee of Fiona de Buitleir, Eric Shaw, Larry Brennan & Paddy Waldron, guest speakers were arranged at past meetings including Paul O’Donnell of the South Galway genealogy group, Peter Beirne of 'The Manse' Local Studies library in Ennis, Jim Herlihy on the RIC, Liam Curran on Irish Soldiers in the British Army, Jonny Dillon of the Folklore Dept., UCD, and Dr. Pat Nugent of the University of Liverpool amongst others. From our own members, speakers have included Dr. Paddy Waldron, Gerry Kennedy, Ger Madden, Declan Barron, Eric Shaw, Robert Cullen, and Larry Brennan. In addition, we have run a number of hands-on computer workshops on genealogical research and the recording of data. The society works in partnership with Clare County Library in order to add to the wonderful fund of genealogy information already available on their website www.clarelibrary.ie Our biggest project to date, completed in 2008 with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Council of Ireland, involved transcription of the gravestones in the old Drumcliffe Cemetery.

  • Introduction 1.0 Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme
CRU/19/091 Irish Water Revenue Control - Revenue Control 3 (2020-2024) Closing Date 11th September 2019 Submission from Clare County Council Introduction Clare County Council welcomes this opportunity to comment on the document in particular under the following headings. 1. Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme. 1.1 Discharge licensing. 1.2 Rural Water Programme. 1.3 Development Plan. 2. Developer Provided Infrastructure (DPI). 3. Capital Programme Irish Water Investment Plan 2020 to 2024. 4. Recommendations. 1.0 Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme For County Clare the issue of un-sewered towns and villages is of great concern. It is preventing housing developments, commercial interest and growth of communities in rural villages and towns which is having a negative social and economic impact and leading to further depopulation in these settlements. Under Irish Water’s “Investment Plan 2020-2024 for CRU Review Appendix 2B-Stakeholder Engagement Feedback from Stage 2 “ (pages 104/105) they have elaborated on their proposals with regard to the Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme. Extract from Appendix 2B-Stakeholder Engagement Feedback. “Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme Feedback from respondents on this theme included the following: Welcome for the clarification provided that the Programme was not restricted to agglomerations above 500 PE; Concern with the response given in the Draft Investment Plan on the use of Rural Regeneration Development Fund of the NDP to provide wastewater capacity in un-sewered villages; Respondents stated their view that the proposed funding allocation methodology, based on the wastewater treatment capacity register for plants above 500 PE, would not be fair to all counties as it doesn’t consider capacity deficits in plants below 500 PE; and 105 | Irish Water | Investment Plan (2020 to 2024) for CRU Determination The importance of balanced regional development and attention to investment requirements in rural towns and villages.

  • The County Clare Surname Culligan
The County Clare surname, Culligan, also written as Quilligan Author: [email protected] The author is the voluntary administrator of a Colgan surname (including Culligan) male DNA project and would welcome the participation of males who bear the Culligan surname in the study; of course, the initiative for participating in the simple, and inexpensive DNA test may be taken by female relatives or Culligan families acting collectively to cover the testing fee by FamilyTreeDNA.com. Prefatory Note Is Culligan a version of Colgan? MacLysaght writes: “Quilligan, Ó Cuileagáin - This Thomond [regional] name is equally well known in its variant form, Culligan” [McLysaght, A Guide to Irish Surnames, 1994]. In Edward MacLysaght’s Supplement to Irish Families, 1994, he wrote: “Culligan, Quilligan – Both these variants of Ó Cuileagáin are Clare names and are mainly found in that county and.. Limerick city … A century ago Culligan was much more numerous that Quilligan but the numbers are now about equal. Woulfe regards the name as an attenuated form of O’Colgan (which is said, without evidence, to be more correctly MacColgan). This implies that the sept immigrated westwards from Offaly which is to some extent corroborated by a fiant of 1588 where one of that name living in King’s County obtained a pardon. An earlier fiant shows another O’Colligan among the many O’Connors whose location is not mentioned. They were, however, well established in West Clare in the 17th century .. as Cullegane is returned in Petty’s Census as a principal name in the barony of Clonderalaw, Ennis”. This, the author’s Colgan Chronology does not include the surname Quilligan within its ambit.

  • Clare Castle & Ballyea
Clare Castle & Ballyea The Parish Remembers by Eric Shaw Clare Roots Society 2011 Clare Castle & Ballyea The Parish Remembers Clare Roots Society was formed in 2006 to provide a forum for family history and genealogical research in County Clare. The Society has undertaken research in many parts of the County. As a native of Clare Castle and member of the Society, I feel that it is opportune to make the results of research pertaining to the Parish available to the people of Clare Castle and Ballyea. © Eric Shaw 2011 – 2nd Edition I dedicate this publication to my wife Breda who assisted in recording many of the gravestone inscriptions, to our children Anne and Aidan, and our Grandchildren, Stephen, Chloe, Aoife & Seán. The water-colour above of the Semple Bridge and the Castle was painted by Fr. Edward Fitzgerald, C. C. Clare Castle 1950- 1955. It was presented by him on his leaving the Village in 1955 to Margaret & Frank Power of Main Street (courtesy of Francis Power) The back cover features a drawing of the Lyons grave of 1816 in Killow Cemetery by Hilary Gilmore 1 INTRODUCTION This publication provides an invaluable record of parish gravestone inscriptions and complements the digitalising of our parish records, which is now underway. As gravestones deteriorate with the passage of time this record will preserve parish gravestone details for this and future generations. Parishioners at home, our diaspora and the public at large will benefit greatly from the preservation of family gravestone inscriptions. The Parish is indebted to Eric Shaw and the Clare Roots Society for their outstanding contributions in bringing this publication to fruition.

In the last few weeks I travelled to 46 Cemeteries throughout Clare. They were mainly on the sites of old churches, monasteries or abbeys, with fascinating histories. The monks certainly had an eye for beauty and selected peaceful settings for their work. Some were on islands, nearly all were on hills, and they invariably were overlooking rivers, lakes, Lough Derg, the Shannon, the Shannon Estuary or the Atlantic. The views from some were spectacular. Inis Cealtra (Holy Island), Scattery Island, Clareabbey, Quin Abbey, Killone Abbey, St Flannan’s Cathedral Killaloe, are amongst the most beautiful sites in Clare.
