The Meaning of A Young Woman’s Life as Seen in Holly Golightly, A Protagonist of Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s.Yogyakarta: English Language Eduacation Study Program, Department of Language and Arts Education, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Sanata Dharma University. The study analyzes a novella entitled Breakfast at Tiffany’s written by Truman Capote. The novella tells about a young woman from rural area, Holly Golightly, who becomes a glamorous socialite in New York City. Her life is as complex as her way of thinking. She calls herself a free spirit. The story of her life is told by an unnamed narrator. The study aims to analyze two research problems. Firstly, it is how Holly Golightly described in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Secondly, it is the meaning of a young woman’s life as seen in Holly Golightly. In analyzing the novella and collecting the data, the writer uses literary research. The primary source is the novella of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The secondary sources are taken from printed books and some online references. The study applies psychological approach and theory of character and characterization, theory of personality, psychoanalysis theory, theory of motivation, and theory of literal and deeper meaning. There are two findings in the study. The first is the description of the characteristics of Holly Golightly. She is described as a good-looking, flighty and free-spirited, money-oriented, and caring person. The second is the analysis of the literal and deeper meaning of the life of Holly Golightly as a young woman. The literal meaning is about her search for the glittering world full of wealth, luxury, and pride. The deeper meaning is a long journey of a young woman in overcoming problems in her past life. Penelitian ini menganalisis novela berjudul Breakfast at Tiffany’s yang ditulis oleh Truman Capote. Novela ini bercerita tentang seorang gadis muda dari pedesaan, Holly Golightly, yang menjelma menjadi sosialita di kota New York. Kehidupannya sekompleks caranya berpikir. Dia menyebut dirinya sendiri sebagai seseorang berjiwa bebas. Kisah kehidupannya diceritakan oleh narator tak bernama. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis dua permasalahan. Pertama adalah tentang bagaimana Holly Golightly dideskripsikan dalam Breakfast at Tiffany’s, dan yang kedua mengenai arti dari kehidupan seorang wanita muda yang terlihat dari Holly Golightly. Dalam menganalisis novela dan mengumpulkan data, penulis menggunakan studi pustaka. Sumber utamanya adalah novela Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Sumber keduanya diperoleh dari buku-buku cetak dan beberapa referensi online. Penelitian ini mengaplikasikan pendekatan psikoanalisis, teori karakter dan karakterisasi, teori kepribadian, teori psikoanalisis, teori motivasi dan teori makna tersirat dan makna sesungguhnya. Terdapat dua hasil penelitian, yang pertama adalah deskripsi karakteristik Holly Golightly, yaitu sebagai orang yang berpenampilan bagus, berjiwa bebas, materialistis, dan penyayang. Kedua, analisis teori makna tersirat dan makna sesungguhnya dari kehidupan Holly Golightly sebagai wanita muda. Makna tersiratnya adalah mengenai pencariannya akan dunia yang penuh dengan kekayaan, kemewahan, dan kebanggaan. Makna sesungguhnya adalah perjalanan panjang seorang wanita muda dalam menyelesaikan masalah di masa lalunya.
