STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Savo Brothers develop- ment firm plans to build 250 housing units on the Mount Manresa property, according to GOP Borough President James Oddo, the first time that development plans for the 15.4-acre site have been revealed.
Oddo said it appears the Savo brothers plan to go forward and could begin pulling permits for the project within two months.
"I don't know where this leaves us," Oddo said. "I'm not giving up, but I don't know what else we can do. They've closed the

Oddo added that the Savos told him that they could have built up to 400 units on the site, although Oddo said he wondered how feasible that number really was.

preservation effort.
This, Oddo said, would have allowed for trees and structures to
be preserved, would have kept open space, and would have confined the project to a smaller footprint.
"This only intensifies our effort to get the mayor involved and save it," Ms. Sanchez said.
"I tried to appeal to their human side," Oddo said. The Savos, he said, rejected the idea.
The Savos did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
"I was never confident we could get a compromise," Oddo said. "But I hoped they could see beyond the profit margin. They could have created something historic in the borough."
