Salsa2bills 1..3 H.R.ANo.A28 RESOLUTION 1 WHEREAS, Stephen Jackson of the 2003 NBA champion San Antonio 2 Spurs is deservedly being inducted into the Legends Sports Gallery 3 of the Museum of the Gulf Coast; and 4 WHEREAS, The only native Texan on the Spurs roster, Mr. 5 Jackson played an integral role in San Antonio 's title run, and his 6 performance in the fourth quarter of the deciding game six of the 7 NBA Finals is indicative of his true value to the team; with San 8 Antonio trailing by 10 points to the New Jersey Nets in the final 9 stanza, he buried three three-point field goals to spark a 19-0 run 10 that sealed the victory and the championship; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was associated with several NBA and 12 international teams before his remarkable talents blossomed during 13 his second year with the Spurs; the 43rd overall pick in the 1997 14 NBA Draft, he attended training camps with the Chicago Bulls and 15 Vancouver Grizzlies and also honed his hoops skills playing in 16 Australia, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic before joining the 17 New Jersey Nets in 2000; and 18 WHEREAS, A member of the 1995 Port Arthur Lincoln High School 19 state championship basketball team, he went on to attend Oak Hill 20 Academy in Virginia and earned a place on both the McDonald 's and 21 Parade Magazine All-American teams; and 22 WHEREAS, Stephen Jackson 's success is a tribute not only to 23 his exceptional athletic ability, but also to his dedication and 24 perseverance, and his countless fans across this state look forward 1 H.R.ANo.A28 1 to watching their fellow Texan continue to add to his impressive 2 record of achievement in the years to come; now, therefore, be it 3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas 4 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Stephen 5 Jackson on his induction into the Legends Sports Gallery of the 6 Museum of the Gulf Coast and extend to him sincere best wishes for 7 continued success; and, be it further 8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 9 prepared for Mr. Jackson as an expression of high regard by the 10 Texas House of Representatives.     Ron Artest, Meet Charlie Sifford By Debbie Waitkus, Golf for Cause There’s been lots of talk over the past several days on the airwaves and around the water coolers about the mêlée at the Indiana Pacers-Detroit Pistons basketball game. We’ve seen replay after replay on television of the foul on the court and the ensuing altercation on the court and the fight in the stands with the fans. As many of you know, David Stern, the NBA Commissioner, administered some hefty fines and suspensions to the players. I’m reminded of those times my parents wanted to make an example out of me, dishing out a punishment that put the fear of death into my younger siblings’ minds. Now, I’m not suggesting that the penalties the NBA handed down to the players are unreasonable. What I do find troubling is that the players chose to cross the line – the boundary separating them from the fans. But the fans struck first, you say. A fan tossed beer onto Ron Artest. The issue is professionalism. As an athlete, you can get caught up in the moment. The adrenaline is flowing; you become invincible. Yet, professional athletes, along with a paycheck, accept a level of responsibility, a code of ethics and a rulebook. These ethics and rules apply to all professionals, athlete or not. Even a comedian being heckled doesn’t run out into the crowd and beat up the heckler(s). Unfortunately, Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson, Jermaine O’Neal, Ben Wallace, Anthony Johnson, Reggie Miller, Chauncey Billups, Elden Campbell and Derrick Coleman all violated the rules of professional basketball.
