______________________________________________________122 RESEARCH SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY DEAN'S REPORT As an established ‘centre of excellence’, maintaining the highest international standards for over 30 years, the RSC has concentrated on areas of research of national importance and international significance. These research activities strengthen the discipline of chemistry in Australia and lead to numerous potential applications in medicine and industry, as well as maintaining a focus on fundamental research. The Australian National University underwent a major Quality Review in 2004. The Review was conducted by a committee of twelve internationally eminent academics. The five best publications of ANU researchers were assessed by international experts in the respective research fields. The total number of international assessors involved in the ANU Review numbered over one thousand. The Executive Summary of the Review report states in part: “On the basis of all the available evidence and our own observations, we confirm the standing of ANU within the elite “Top 100” research intensive universities in the world, even among the top 50 or so.” On the basis of chemistry citations, ANU chemistry already ranked in the top 100 institutions world wide. We quote from the Review’s comments on chemistry research: The research topics of the inorganic chemistry group at the Research School of Chemistry (RSC) cover a broad range of very high standard fundamental research. The School also has strengths in synthetic organic chemistry. The creative work in supramolecular chemistry and the approach to chemo-enzymatic synthesis are at the forefront of new developments internationally. Important areas of biological and structural chemistry are being investigated, reflecting the growing importance of organic chemistry to biological problems. The ANU has some of the world’s leading researchers in physical and analytical chemistry – working on colloids and interfaces, solar energy, electron diffraction and X-ray diffuse scattering. Similarly, the theoretical and computational chemistry group at RSC is regarded as one of the best in the world. Since it was founded in 1968, the RSC has earned seven Fellowships of the Royal Society of London. Prior to 2004, the RSC had more Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science than any other chemistry department in Australia. Continuing its outstanding record of performance and recognition in this regard, Professors Christopher Easton and Martin Banwell were both elected Fellows in 2004, bringing our total membership to fifteen. Given the rules governing elections to the Academy of Science, the election of two chemists from one School or department in any one year is quite exceptional. Other major prizes and awards won by

    Professor Lewis Mander FAA Research School of Chemistry Australian National University, Australia Structural and biosynthetic studies on the alkaloids from the Australian rainforest tree, Galbulimima belgraveana. The structures have been determined for 22 unique alkaloids isolated from the bark of the rain forest tree Galbulimima belgraveana which is the sole surviving species from the relic family Himantandraceae found in Northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The alkaloids vary considerably in structure and biological activity, but one, namely himbacine, was found to be a potent cardio-selective muscarinic antagonist, due to its ability to bind selectively with M2/M4 muscarinic receptors. Thus, himbacine became a lead compound in the search for new drugs for the treatment of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. While interest in himbacine has waned, a synthetic analogue has been shown to be a potent orally active thrombin receptor (PAR-1) antagonist and is presently undergoing stage 3 clinical trials for the treatment of acute coronary syndrome and for secondary-prevention in patients who have had a prior myocardial infarct or stroke. In addition to the 22 alkaloids described earlier, we have isolated and determined the structures of a further seven alkaloids with a view to shedding light on their biosynthesis and therapeutic potential. Biography Lew Mander was born in Auckland, New Zealand, where he completed his BSc and MSc (hons.) degrees at the University of Auckland. After moving to Australia, he obtained his Ph.D. in 1964 at the University of Sydney then undertook two years of postdoctoral studies initially at the University of Michigan and then at the California Institute of Technology.

    VOLUME EDITORS Tadhg Begley obtained his BSc from the National University of Ireland in Cork in 1977 and his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology (P. Dervan) in 1982. He carried out postdoctoral studies at the University of Geneva (W. Oppolzer) and at MIT (C. Walsh). After 23 years in the Cornell Chemistry Department, he recently moved to Texas A&M University where he is the Derek H. R. Barton Professor of Chemistry. Begley’s research is focused on the mechanistic enzymology of complex organic transformations, particularly those found on the vitamin biosyn- thetic pathways. Dr. Begley has a keen interest in the development of chemical biology. He has helped organize several major conferences and is the co-organizer (with John Schwab, NIH) of the NIH Young Faculty Mentoring Workshop. He is a member of the editorial boards for Molecular Biosystems, Vitamins and Hormones, Bioorganic Chemistry, Chemical Biology and Drug Design, and the Wiley Encyclopedia of Chemical Biology and has recently coauthored, with John McMurry, The Organic Chemistry of Biological Pathways. Phillip Crews is currently Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His training included a B.S. in chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of California, Los Angles. He engaged in postdoctoral research at Princeton University for a year, supported by a National Science Foundation Fellowship. His entire independent academic career has been at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Early in his term as an assistant professor, he began, without prior training, a program in marine natural products chemistry, which required a 10-year incubation to become successful.

This year the Natural Products chapter of RACI will be hosted by the National Institute of Complementary Medicine on Friday, 2 October at the Campbelltown Campus of the Western Sydney University. Abstracts are invited for 20 minute oral or poster presentations with the deadline for submissions, Wednesday, 2 September 2015. Abstracts must be submitted electronically by email to [email protected] with the subject line “RACI 2015 Abstract Submission”.
