The event begins on Tuesday, January 11th in Bangalore with a welcome reception at the Bangalore Club, a grand English country club that has been one of India’s finest since being established in 1868. This centuries old institution has hosted numerous distinguished members, including Sir Winston Churchill. After spending the evening in Bangalore, the trip will commence on Wednesday morning with a welcome meeting hosted by the Coffee Board of India, followed by lunch and a drive by chartered bus to Chikmagalur. Wednesday evening will be spent at the colonial Kadur Club in Chikmagalur. On Thursday, January 13, the tour continues to Magundi in the Chikmagalur region, home of Kaapi Royale’s award-winning Sethuraman Estate farms. Participants will take a guided walking tour of Sethuraman Estate, other farms in the region and processing facilities at the height of the bustling coffee harvest. Friday morning will begin with a sunrise breakfast on the farm, followed by the organized cupping of numerous coffees prepared in a range of processing methods from the locations visited the previous day and from other farms from around India. That afternoon, the tour will continue to nearby tea plantations and visit exotic forests with native wildlife. On Saturday, January 15th, the tour turns north to explore Coorg, a burgeoning coffee growing region that is referred to as the “Scotland of India” by British colonialists for its green hills and lush forests. Before returning to Bangalore from Coorg on Sunday, January 16th, the group will visit world famous Mysore Palace, a place of architectural beauty and historical significance with temples dating back to the late 14th century. A tour fee of US$995 per individual traveler or US$1,500 per rooming pair includes hotels, meals and ground transportation originating in Bangalore. Reservations for the available seats can be guaranteed with a US$250 nonrefundable deposit; all fees are due on or before December 1, 2010. Deputy Commissioner Chikkamagaluru District, Karnataka Preparerd by: District Disaster Management Authority Chikkamagaluru District, Karnataka OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY COMMISSIONER Chikkamagaluru District, Karnataka Ph: 08262-230401(O); 231499 (ADC); 231222 (Fax) e.mail: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] 1 P R E F A C E Chikkamagaluru district is a district with varied climatic and geographic conditions. While part of the district falls in the Malnad region, another part falls in the plain lands. Therefore the problems faced by these areas may also be different and diverse. Due to unlimited human intervention with nature and exploitation of nature, the frequency and probability of the disasters and accidents have increased drastically in the recent times. The heavy rains of August 2019 has taught the Administration to be alert and prepared for such type of disasters which are unforeseen. On the one hand heavy rains may cause floods, water logging and intense landslides, there may also be situations of drought and famine. In view of this the district has to be ready and gear itself up to meet any situation of emergency that may occur. The District Disaster Management Plan is the key for management of any emergency or disaster as the effects of unexpected disasters can be effectively addressed. This plan has been prepared based on the experiences of the past in the management of various disasters that have occurred in the district. This plan contains the blue print of the precautionary measures that need to be taken for the prevention of such disasters as well as the steps that have to be taken for ensuring that the human suffering and misery is reduced by appropriate and timely actions in rescuing the affected persons, shifting them to safer places and providing them with timely medical care and attention.

  • Today Farm News 27.09.2012 A.M Maize Production in Erode District Is
Today Farm News 27.09.2012 A.M 27.09.2012 Sep Maize production likely to go up Maize production in Erode district is likely to increase this financial year, thanks to the higher prices, good export and domestic demand. The farming community has brought in more than 3,000 hectares under maize crop this year so far and the agriculture officials predict that the total area under the crop will cross 8,500 hectares. In 2011-12, farmers have cultivated maize on 7,346 hectares. “Maize consumption in the country has witnessed a healthy growth following the demand from the poultry sector. A majority of the maize produced in the country is consumed by the poultry farmers. The prices now hover around Rs. 1,400 a quintal and there is good demand in the domestic market. So we expect the acreage under the crop to go up this year,” a senior official in the Agriculture Department says. Apart from the higher price, water shortage is also one of the primary reasons that has forced many farmers to chose less water intensive, short-term crops such as maize. The storage at the Bhavanisagar reservoir, which is the primary water source for more than two lakh acres in the district, is poor due to the scanty rainfall. As a result, the farming community in the district is left with a few crop choices. Many farmers particularly those in the Lower Bhavani Project ayacut are not willing to take up long-term cash crops such as sugarcane, banana and turmeric. They consider short-term crops such as maize for cultivation this year.

  • District Irrigation Plan
DISTRICT IRRIGATION PLAN CHIKKAMAGALURU Prepared by JOINT DIRECTOR OF AGRICULTURE, CHIKKAMAGALURU JULY - 2016 i | Page FOREWORD Chikkamagaluru district has been foreign exchange earner for the country for ages, through its dominating position in production, processing and trading of Coffee and other plantation products. Lately it is gaining the name of Pepper Kingdom, owing to the immense increase in earnings by this product in the district. Although per capita income is around 1.18 lakhs, disparities within the population is highly visible, mostly due to the fact that bulk of district GDP comes from Services sector like, Exports, Trade, Banking and Hospitality sector, in which larger population does not participate. The three distinctly different agro-climatic zones of the district also contribute to income disparities in the rural areas, with a sparsely populated hilly and Malnad region, that contribute income from plantations have a higher per capita earning than the plains of Central dry zone of Kadur taluk and Southern Transitional Zone of Tarikere and eastern parts of Chikkamagaluru taluk. High rainfall of Malnad region varying between 1900 mm to 3500 mm and scanty rains in Kadur and Tarikere taluks between 600 mm and 700 mm not only cause income disparities, but also challenges in distribution of water for agriculture and domestic use purposes, so much so some of the villages in high rainfall zone and scanty rainfall regions face drinking water issues in summer. The district has seized the Prime Minister’s Krishi Sinchayee Yojana as an opportunity to plan for better use of rain water for agriculture, domestic, livestock, industrial and other uses.

PRIORITIZING TRADITIONAL CONSERVATION PRACTICES FOR KARNATAKA Yogesh Gokhale*, Kushalappa C^, Bhat H. R*, Madhav Gadgil* Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560012, India Ph: 3600985 College of Forestry, Ponnampet, Kodagu 1.Current Status Karnataka has diversity of landscapes associated with biological and socio-cultural diversity. The physical geographical features have been largely responsible for the ecology and the cultural affinities of people with the biodiversity. The State can be broadly divided into 2 regions in terms of physical geography: Western Ghats and Eastern semi-arid plains. The secular and sacred cultural traditions linked with the biodiversity are more of a function of the physical geography of the region and the biodiversity supported by the geography and hence the climatic conditions. The Western Ghats is part of one of the megadiversity hot-spots in the world and harbour a range of cultural practices like sacred groves, sacred stretches of riverbeds, streambeds and tanks, sacred mangroves, sacred species of plants and animals. And historically it also supported totemism associated with the local people in the area. The Western Ghats consists of part of Uttara Kannada district, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. consists of the Uttara Kannada, Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Hassan and Kodagu districts. Locally the whole region comprising the West Coast and the Western Ghats is referred as Malnad. The sacred elements (SEs) in the Malnad region can be described as follows: The most common SE in this region is sacred grove (SG). But the SGs vary in terms of size, ownership patterns and also with respect to the vegetation.
