Constructing, Programming, and Branding Celebrity on Reality Television
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Producing Reality Stardom: Constructing, Programming, and Branding Celebrity on Reality Television A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Lindsay Nicole Giggey 2017 © Copyright by Lindsay Nicole Giggey 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Producing Reality Stardom: Constructing, Programming, and Branding Celebrity on Reality Television by Lindsay Nicole Giggey Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor John T. Caldwell, Chair The popular preoccupation with celebrity in American culture in the past decade has been bolstered by a corresponding increase in the amount of reality programming across cable and broadcast networks that centers either on established celebrities or on celebrities in the making. This dissertation examines the questions: How is celebrity constructed, scheduled, and branded by networks, production companies, and individual participants, and how do the constructions and mechanisms of celebrity in reality programming change over time and because of time? I focus on the vocational and cultural work entailed in celebrity, the temporality of its production, and the notion of branding celebrity in reality television. Dissertation chapters will each focus on the kinds of work that characterize reality television production cultures at the network, production company, and individual level, with specific attention paid to programming focused ii on celebrity making and/or remaking. Celebrity is a cultural construct that tends to hide the complex labor processes that make it possible. This dissertation unpacks how celebrity status is the product of a great deal of seldom recognized work and calls attention to the hidden infrastructures that support the production, maintenance, and promotion of celebrity on reality television. -

Donald Trump Shoots the Match1 Sharon Mazer
Donald Trump Shoots the Match1 Sharon Mazer The day I realized it can be smart to be shallow was, for me, a deep experience. —Donald J. Trump (2004; in Remnick 2017:19) I don’t care if it’s real or not. Kill him! Kill him! 2 He’s currently President of the USA, but a scant 10 years ago, Donald Trump stepped into the squared circle, facing off against WWE owner and quintessential heel Mr. McMahon3 in the “Battle of the Billionaires” (WrestleMania XXIII). The stakes were high. The loser would have his head shaved by the winner. (Spoiler alert: Trump won.) Both Trump and McMahon kept their suits on—oversized, with exceptionally long ties—in a way that made their heads appear to hover, disproportionately small, over their bulky (Trump) and bulked up (McMahon) bodies. As avatars of capitalist, patriarchal power, they left the heavy lifting to the gleamingly exposed, hypermasculinist bodies of their pro-wrestler surrogates. McMahon performed an expert heel turn: a craven villain, egging the audience to taunt him as a clueless, elitist frontman as he did the job of casting Trump as an (unlikely) babyface, the crowd’s champion. For his part, Trump seemed more mark than smart. Where McMahon and the other wrestlers were working around him, like ham actors in an outsized play, Trump was shooting the match: that is, not so much acting naturally as neglecting to act at all. He soaked up the cheers, stalked the ring, took a fall, threw a sucker punch, and claimed victory as if he (and he alone) had fought the good fight (WWE 2013b). -
Rob Kardashian, His Then-Fiancée Blac Chyna and Their Pregnancy/Newborn Daughter, for One Season
The Neoliberal Life of the “Failing” Kardashian: Robert Kardashian On (Not) Keeping up with the Kardashians Leah Groenewoud (Third year, RLCT/GEND Major) GEND 3076 Dr. Wendy Peters April 5, 2015 Introduction Keeping up with the Kardashians (KUWTK) is a reality television show that follows the lives of the Kardashian family – a famous, upper-class Californian family consisting of Kris Jenner (the Kardashians’ mother and business manager), her (now ex-) husband Caitlyn Jenner and their children. Kris’ children include Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and Robert Kardashian, and Kris and Caitlyn have two younger children, Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Rob & Chyna is a reality TV spin-off of KUWTK which followed Rob Kardashian, his then-fiancée Blac Chyna and their pregnancy/newborn daughter, for one season. This paper will employ a textual analysis of these two shows to analyze how Robert Kardashian’s life and life choices are portrayed as personal failures. Conversations and information about Rob – in the 12 episodes across 6 seasons of KUWTK, and 6 episodes of season 1 of Rob & Chyna which I studied – are consistently about how Rob must change, and that he is not happy or successful the way he is. Robert Kardashian is consistently portrayed as a failure, which this paper will clarify to mean a neoliberal failure. This paper will analyze the neoliberal logics of the narratives about Robert and the way he lives, including narratives about his health, his (lack of) independence and self-esteem, his marriageability and employability.i I will conclude with an analysis of how KUWTK and Rob & Chyna facilitate a ‘panoptic existence’ for Rob, in which his family, the viewers and even himself surveil and regulate Rob. -

Finally the Rock has come back to Springfield. You know, it’s good clean fun. Honestly, I wouldn’t let my son watch it. This is Austin’s middle finger. Too much violence. That and a lot of kids want to be like Stone Cold so they’ll drink beer. The female wrestlers, I think, are tremendous athletes. Big boobs and ripping each other’s clothes off. She’s a whore. Sometimes they get naked. The women are just their little playthings. The things they make them do, get on the ground and bark (barking sounds). That was pretty cool what they did to Trish. It’s promoting men beating on women. They want to come into the man’s world, they deserve to be treated just like a man. If a man is hitting a woman what is that showing the little kid? It’s not the WWF’s responsibility to raise them kids. It’s no worse than watching a movie or watching a soap opera or watching television. It’s entertainment. It’s entertainment. It’s just entertainment. I think it’s only entertainment, yeah. SUT JHALLY: You know it’s really difficult to get people to take professional wrestling seriously. Whenever I say that I’m working on this project on wrestling, people start smiling and laughing, almost as if to say “ how can you take this stuff so seriously. -

Burundian Refugees in Western Tanzania, It Can Be Expected That Such Activities Would Take Place
BURUNDIAN REFUGEES IN TANZANIA: The Key Factor to the Burundi Peace Process ICG Central Africa Report N° 12 30 November 1999 PROLOGUE The following report was originally issued by the International Crisis Group (ICG) as an internal paper and distributed on a restricted basis in February 1999. It incorporates the results of field research conducted by an ICG analyst in and around the refugee camps of western Tanzania during the last three months of 1998. While the situation in Central Africa has evolved since the report was first issued, we believe that the main thrust of the analysis presented remains as valid today as ever. Indeed, recent events, including the killing of UN workers in Burundi and the deteriorating security situation there, only underscore the need for greater attention to be devoted to addressing the region’s unsolved refugee problem. With this in mind, we have decided to reissue the report and give it a wider circulation, in the hope that the information and arguments that follow will help raise awareness of this important problem and stimulate debate on the best way forward. NAT TURNER's REVOLT: REBELLION and RESPONSE in SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA by PATRICK H. BREEN (Under the Direction of Emory
NAT TURNER’S REVOLT: REBELLION AND RESPONSE IN SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA by PATRICK H. BREEN (Under the Direction of Emory M. Thomas) ABSTRACT In 1831, Nat Turner led a revolt in Southampton County, Virginia. The revolt itself lasted little more than a day before it was suppressed by whites from the area. Many people died during the revolt, including the largest number of white casualties in any single slave revolt in the history of the United States. After the revolt was suppressed, Nat Turner himself remained at-large for more than two months. When he was captured, Nat Turner was interviewed by whites and this confession was eventually published by a local lawyer, Thomas R. Gray. Because of the number of whites killed and the remarkable nature of the Confessions, the revolt has remained the most prominent revolt in American history. Despite the prominence of the revolt, no full length critical history of the revolt has been written since 1937. This dissertation presents a new history of the revolt, paying careful attention to the dynamic of the revolt itself and what the revolt suggests about authority and power in Southampton County. The revolt was a challenge to the power of the slaveholders, but the crisis that ensued revealed many other deep divisions within Southampton’s society. Rebels who challenged white authority did not win universal support from the local slaves, suggesting that disagreements within the black community existed about how they should respond to the oppression of slavery. At the same time, the crisis following the rebellion revealed divisions within white society. -
