Hollyfort Gorey Leskinfere Ballycanew Parish Newsletter March 2018 The condolences of the parishes are extended to the family of the late Mr Richard (Richie) Blake who passed away in Gorey District Hospital on February 24th last. Get well soon wishes are extended to all who are unwell at the moment. Congratulations: to Raymond and Dawn Kinsella (neé Tully) on the birth of their daughter Niamh on February 1st last; to Lesley Bayley who had a surprise birthday party recently!!!! Gorey/Hollyfort Mothers Union: with the start of the New Year our MU annual Christmas outing was held on the 15th of January last. We had a lovely dinner in Katie Daly’s and then we visited the Gorey Little Theatre to see the pantomime Cinderella. A fantastic evening was had by all with plenty of audience participation-‘with a little bit of this and a little bit of that!’ Our Annual General Meeting was held on the 29th January in the Old School Gorey. We were sad to say goodbye to Mrs Georgina Byrne who has retired as our Chairperson after many years of stellar service. Many thanks Georgina for all your hard work over the years. We are delighted to have Mrs. Margaret Cooper as our new Chairperson and we wish her all the best in her new role. We held our open meeting on Monday February 19th. Other branches and friends were invited. Unfortunately our speaker from the RNLI was unable to come so instead we had a reminder of the Five Objects of Mothers Union; some details of our beginning by Mary Sumner in 1876; a poem; stories written by Georgina as part of her creative writing course and the ‘Seniors’ version of the hymn ‘Jesus loves me’ reminding us of His continuing love for us and our ability to serve Him at any age. The meeting ended with the Grace and supper. Our next meeting will be on March 12th where we hope to have a hobbies evening where we all hope to share our experiences and also a meditation evening with Lesley. All are welcome. Courtown RNLI Can you tell the story of the most incredible and selfless acts that the people living in your community do on any given day? Can you motivate people to support a cause that works to save lives and prevent drowning? If you know you can and you recognise that you can make a real difference, Courtown RNLI want to hear from you. Your local volunteer lifeboat crew want people living in their community to help them raise awareness, tell their story, share safety advice and raise the funds needed to continue saving lives. For more information please call Pauline on 087 9974038 or email [email protected] Parish halls: We are very lucky in our group of parishes to have four excellent parish halls. However the demand for hall space in our community is growing all the time so if any group wishes to book one of the halls they must make sure to have group insurance in place and an up to date child protection policy if involved in a youth based activity. Groups must also agree to the fact that the hall may be needed unexpectedly for a parish event such as a funeral which will involve short notice. The clergy of the parish do not deal with hall bookings. Groups must understand that parish events at short notice may take precedence over booked events. The contact people in each parish are: Gorey Mrs. Patricia Masterson 0868683525; Ballycanew Mr. Clinton Furney 0879010211; Hollyfort Mrs. Noeleen Grannell 0863230561 and Leskinfere Mrs. Valerie Copeland 0870573656 Weddings: Anyone planning to marry in the parishes must contact the Rector prior to booking a hotel to save any difficulty with dates and must give the State 3 months’ notice in order to obtain a Marriage Registration Form. Garda Vetting: In order for anyone to assist in parish events where young people are involved they must complete a Garda Vetting form. Please contact the Rector for a form and advice on how to complete it. Only those who have completed Garda vetting and Safe Guarding Trust training can be permitted to assist in youth events in the parishes. Our advertisers: please do take a look at the advertisements at the back of our newsletter because it is thanks to the support of these businesses that allows us to have such a colourful and impressive newsletter. If you do avail of the services of one of our advertisers please do let them know you saw their advert in the newsletter so that they know they are getting value for their investment! Deadline: the last date for items to be included in this newsletter is the last Monday of the month so please send them to the parish email address before that date. As the amount of space granted to each parochial group/union in the Diocesan Magazine seems to get smaller all the time please do send in items for the parish newsletter where we have more space and freedom to publish all of your events. This newsletter has a wide readership and is a great way to get your event/fundraiser advertised. Dear Parents/Guardians, The following information is for your attention: Dates for your Diary: a) In-Service Training: School closed on Monday 12th March. b) St. Patrick’s Day: School closed on Monday 19th March. c) Easter Holidays: School closes Friday 23rd March at 12.30pm & re-opens Monday 9th April at 8.40 a.m. No Uniform Day: Our No Uniform Day held on 22nd December raised € 312.00 for school funds. Thank you for your support. General School news: Congratulations to Ms. Hempenstall on her recent engagement. All at Gorey Central wish her and her fiancé many years of happiness; congratulations to Ms. Gahan who was married on February 17th last. We wish the happy couple a long and happy life together. The Junior Entrepreneur Programme: 5th and 6th Classes are progressing really well through the Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP). As part of step 3 Ms. McDermott and Ms. Furney arranged to visit a local business in the town and also invited a local entrepreneur in to speak to our classes. On Thursday January 25th the classes visited James Tomkins Garage and listened to Mr. Tomkins story of setting up a successful business. On Friday January 26th Mr. Dave Lavelle from Eco Restaurant visited the classes and spoke to them about setting up and running a successful restaurant. The pupils really enjoyed hearing from such wonderful entrepreneurs! Ms. McDermott and Ms. Furney. Blue Star Programme: this is an education initiative for Primary School students across Ireland. The idea of the programme is simple-to foster better understanding and knowledge of Europe and how it affects the lives of Irish citizens among Irish primary pupils through classroom projects and activities. The children in 5th Class have recently started work on this programme and have chosen to focus on France this year and hope to learn as much as possible about all things French.
