The focus of these studies has often been on how the concept of sevā has been expanded, appropriated, and repackaged. On one front, scholarship has looked at the Neo-Vedanta groups that have seemingly absorbed Western methods of social service and guised them as indigenous Indian concepts. The second major area of scholarly interest has been on the Hindu nationalist groups, such as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), that have utilized the concept of sevā as a means to push forth an anti- Islamic and xenophobic ideology. In fact, until very recently, little effort had been allocated to the study of Hindu devotional movements that have both textual and philosophical underpinnings that advocate sevā and a substantial precedent of performing sevā. This thesis argues that the idea of sevā in some Hindu devotional movements is not a form of appropriation or repackaging of a Western service ideal; it, instead, has an innate connection with sādhanā, or a means for spiritual progression. Sevā, even when found in unique forms such as health fairs, blood drives, and education seminars, is felt by practitioners of certain Hindu devotional groups to be deeply connected to and 7 qualified as sādhanā. This research will illuminate the philosophy and historical precedent that underlie the performance of this sevā by these two Hindu groups. In doing so, there is a unique and necessary addition to the ongoing dialectic regarding Hindu sevā. 8 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Setting the Stage In the 1930s, Paul Hacker began his study of Indology at numerous universities in Germany. By the end of the 1940s, he began studying Indian philosophy, with a particular interest in the Advaita tradition. His study of Advaita often engaged in comparisons by taking Christian theological understandings of concepts such as man and God as paradigmatic, a standard against which other systems should be measured.1 Hacker also tended to study philosophical concepts chronologically, noting the shifts in the meaning of these concepts with the passage of time. Consequentially, his studies of Advaita in this manner eventually lead him to dividing the tradition into two parts: traditional Advaita and Neo-Advaita or Neo-Vedanta. Hacker understood Neo-Advaita to be little more than an adulteration of the original Advaita concepts and teachings.2 One of these adulterations, Hacker reasoned, was the inclusion of an ethical dimension that had no basis in traditional Advaita. Hacker held that this inclusion was a result of Neo-Vedanta leaders being in contact with western and Christian ideas; the idea of ethics in Neo-Advaita was little more than an instance of appropriation of foreign concepts. Accordingly, Hacker sharply criticized Neo-Advaita groups, such as the Ramakrishna Mission, which displayed this ethical dimension in the form of social service projects. By looking at the theological, epistemological, ontological, and performative contexts of two Hindu devotional traditions in the Atlanta area, this thesis will look to add to the western academic dialectic surrounding Hindu sevā, or service. It will commence by closely analyzing Hacker’s claims regarding sevā in the Advaita system and laying out the resulting academic scholarship that followed Hacker’s initial work. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

According to the Dhatupatha the word yajna derives from yaj* in Sanskrit language that broadly means, [a] worship of GODs (natural forces), [b] synchronisation between various domains of creation and [c] charity.1 The concept of God differs from religion to religion. The ancient Hindu scriptures conceptualises Natural forces as GOD or Devatas (deva that which enlightens [div = light]). Commonly in all ancient civilizations the worship of Natural forces as GODs was prevalent. Therefore any form of manifested (Sun, fire and so on) and or unmanifested (Prana, Manas and so on) form of energy is considered as GOD even in Hindu tradition.     Hinduism Around the World Numbering approximately 1 billion in global followers, Hinduism is the third-largest religion in the world. Though more than 90 percent of Hindus live on the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan), the Hindu diaspora’s impact can still be felt today. Hindus live on every continent, and there are three Hindu majority countries in the world: India, Nepal, and Mauritius. Hindu Diaspora Over Centuries Hinduism began in the Indian subcontinent and gradually spread east to what is now contemporary Southeast Asia. Ancient Hindu cultures thrived as far as Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Some of the architectural works (including the famous Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia) still remain as vestiges of Hindu contact. Hinduism in Southeast Asia co-worshipped with Buddhism for centuries. However, over time, Buddhism (and later Islam in countries such as Indonesia) gradually grew more prominent. By the 10th century, the practice of Hinduism in the region had waned, though its influence continued to be strong. To date, Southeast Asia has the two highest populations of native, non-Indic Hindus: the Balinese Hindus of Indonesia and the Cham people of Vietnam. The next major migration took place during the Colonial Period, when Hindus were often taken as indentured laborers to British and Dutch colonies. As a result, Hinduism spread to the West Indies, Fiji, Copyright 2014 Hindu American Foundation Malaysia, Mauritius, and South Africa, where Hindus had to adjust to local ways of life. Though the Hindu populations in many of these places declined over time, countries such as Guyana, Mauritius, and Trinidad & Tobago, still have significant Hindu populations.

The first announcement of the present "International Seminar on Indology: Past, Present and Future" contains some challenging questions, which I would like to cite in context. We read there: Indology is, of recent, being looked at as an East-West encounter; philosophers of this century express their view that the time has come to reach beyond ‘occident’ and ‘orient’. In his study, India and Europe, W. Halbfass observes: In the modern planetary situation Eastern and Western ‘cultures’ can no longer meet one another as equal partners. They meet in a westernized world, under conditions shaped by Western ways of thinking. ... If this is true, is ‘European’ or ‘Western’ discourse the destiny of Indology? Will the Neo-Hindu attempts to ‘actualize’ ancient Indian teachings for the present succeed in establishing a stronger alternative? Will there ever be an ‘Indian discourse’ in Indology? Could such a discourse serve as the best solution for the present predicament? There is of course no way of denying that Indology was initially a European enterprise, carried out by European scholars, either in India or in Europe, either with the help of Indian pandits or without them. In this sense, Indology originally was characterized by ‘European’ or ‘Western’ discourse. Many of its themes and preconceptions were determined by the European context.
