Automated Rapid Transit Trains
Press Release 16 September 2014 A contract worth approximately €280 Million Alstom to deliver Australia’s first fully-automated rapid transit trains Alstom will deliver Sydney’s new generation of rapid transit trains as part of the North West Rail Link, Australia’s first fully-automated rail network and Australia’s largest public transport project. Under the operations contract for the North West Rail Link, awarded today to the Northwest Rapid Transit consortium, Alstom will be responsible for the project management, design, supply, manufacturing, testing and commissioning of the rolling stock and signalling systems. Alstom will supply 22 six-car fully-automated Metropolis train sets and the Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system. Under the contract, the North West Rail Link is expected to open in 2019. “Alstom’s Metropolis and computer based train control signalling systems are based on proven platforms that have been adapted to the specific needs of Sydney which will ensure fast, safe and reliable services to the residents of Sydney’s North West”, said Bernard Joyce, Managing Director of Alstom Transport in Australia and New Zealand. Alstom’s Metropolis is a world leading, proven, safe and reliable train that serves many of the great global cities including Amsterdam, Barcelona and Singapore, with more than 10 years of operational experience in fully-automated operation. More than 4000 cars have been sold in over 40 cities. The streamlined design for Sydney’s rapid transit trains has been developed to meet the needs of customers in Sydney. The trains will include 3 double-doors per car for improved access and passenger flows, large windows, ambient LED lighting. -

Deemed the ‘mother of all metro stations’, and under construction by Afcons Infrastructure, the three-decked metro station is expected to open in April 2018, reports the Times of India. Located below the ever-buzzing Poonamallee High Road, the Central Metro station will be one of two metro stations, (apart from Alandur metro station) where Corridor I (Airport–Washermanpet) will intersect with Corridor II (Chennai Central–St Thomas Mount) via Egmore and CMBT. Here are five things to know about Chennai’s biggest upcoming 28m-deep underground station: 1. The Central metro station will be equipped with over 62 staircases, 36 escalators and 15 elevators. If you think there’s a chance you might lose your way in the humongous maze-like space, signboards with the directions leading to your destination will come to your rescue and guide you. 2. Estimated to be double the size of an average underground station in the city, the station will have 50,000 sqft dedicated to food and entertainment at the ticketing level. So, no longer will waiting at a metro station be a dull affair. You will have all the avenues to fulfil your gastronomic and entertainment delights. 3. The station will be equipped with over 14 ticket counters staffed by uniformed Chennai Metro Rail personnel to help you use the ticket-vending machine. -

International Journal of Scientific & Engineering Research, Volume 4, Issue 9, September-2013 243 ISSN 2229-5518 Howrah Bridge and Second Hooghly Bridge: A Comprehensive Comparative Study 1Arnab Chakraborty, 2Ritaja Ray Abstract: The Howrah Bridge and Second Hooghly Bridge has been serving the city of Kolkata in conjunction with each other by allowing the city to be well connected with the rest of the state and indeed the rest of the country. The bridges by themselves, the former being of balanced- cantilever form and the latter being cable-stayed, are marvels of bridge engineering with each being built in very different eras with tremendous variation in the technology that had been employed, all to serve the one purpose of improving communication and traffic conditions by releasing some of the volume exerted on each due to daily movement. The main issue of this research is to make a comparative review of the two bridges, mainly from strict technical points of views and also from the social and economic factors that arise out of them. The structural configurations, foundation characteristics, construction techniques and maintenance issues have been extensively discussed. Relevant statistical facts relating to traffic volume on the bridges and illustrations have been provided as and when required to verify some of the facts that has been discussed. Stadler Inaugurated Its New Factory in Belarus
MEDIA RELEASE Fanipol, 20 November 2014 Stadler inaugurated its new factory in Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus and Peter Spuhler, owner and CEO of Stadler Rail Group have today ceremonially inaugurated the new rolling stock manufacturing factory of Stadler established in Fanipol, Belarus. The new plant is responsible for the production of broad gauge rolling stock for CIS countries, including the starting project for the manufacturing of 21 double decker EMUs for Russian airport railways operator Aeroexpress. The maximum output of the factory at full capacity reaches the 120 carbodies per annum. The value of investment is EUR 76 million, while the number of employees is 600 people. Stadler decided to found a subsidiary and establish a factory in Belarus in order to supply dynamically developing CIS countries with the broad gauge products of the group. The reason behind establishing the factory in Fanipol was the available qualified workforce, its proximity to broad gauge countries, and the country’s customs union with Russia and Kazakhstan. The subsidiary was established in 2012 under the name of OJSC Stadler Minsk as a joint venture, originally with the majority ownership of Stadler Rail AG and the minority ownership Minsk Oblast Executive Committee. Later Stadler bought up the minority shares and became 100% owner of the Belarusian subsidiary. The value of investment Stadler has up till now performed in Belarus is totalling to EUR 76 million. The subsidiary currently employs altogether 600 people. Within the group OJSC Stadler Minsk is responsible for the production of broad gauge rolling stock ordered by customers operating in CIS countries. -

There are around 148 cities around the world which has a metro system with nearly 540 metro lines, 9,000 stations and 11,000 kilometres of line infrastructure . The world’s metro systems carry 150 million passengers per day. The earliest metro system, the London Underground, first electrified underground line opened in 1890, was the world's first metro system. With more than 500 km of infrastructure, Shanghai has the world’s longest Metro network. London is the longest non Asian Metro network in the ranking, with New York, Moscow, Madrid and Paris. INDIAN SCENARIO Metro systems2 are often given preference as mass transit options for Indian cities due to the belief that road-based bus systems cannot cater to capacity requirements as much as metro systems. -
