Antioxidant Activity of Selected Lesser Known Edible Fruits from Western Ghats of India

The data obtained shown the anthocyanin, ascorbic acid, total phenolics and flavonoid levels were significantly higher in the methanol extract of Mahonia leschenaultii (Wall. ex Wight & Arn.) Takeda fruits. Gaultheria fragrantissima Wall. and Rubus ellipticus Sm. fruits were also found to have significant amount of phytochemicals analyzed. M. leschenaultii fruits had highest antioxidant activity when compared to all other fruit extracts. There was a strong correlation between the content of phytochemicals and antioxidant activities in all fruit extracts in the following decreasing order: M. leschenaultii > G. fragrantissima > R. ellipticus > Grewia tiliaefolia Vahl > Ziziphus rugosa Lam.> Flueggea leucopyrus Willd. Seeni Plant Biotechnology Division, Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute, Pacha-Palode P.O., Thiruvananthapuram 695 562 India ∗Corresponding author, e-mail: [email protected] Received 10 Nov 2010 Accepted 26 Oct 2012 ABSTRACT: Conservation of Mahonia leschenaultii was achieved through multiple axillary shoot formation in single node cultures, in vitro and ex vitro rooting of the shoots, and successful reintroduction and establishment of the rooted plants in the forests of Palani hills in Southern India. A preliminary experiment on the culture of young nodal explants (1.0–1.5 cm) from field-grown plants in different basal nutrient media revealed high frequency bud beak in Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) medium followed by Woody Plant medium and Murashige Skoog medium in 4 weeks. Subsequent culture of both shoot tips (0.5–0.8 cm) and nodes for 6 weeks in SH medium supplemented with various concentration of cytokinins resulted in optimal formation of 3.6 shoots in 80% of the nodes against 1.35 shoots in 75% of the shoot tips in the presence of 2.0 and 1.0 mg/l benzyl adenine (BA), respectively. Invariably, the resident apical and axillary meristems grew into a single shoot (1.0–1.8 cm) in 1–2 weeks followed by the characteristic differentiation of additional buds from its base. A synergistic combination of 1.0 mg/l BA and 0.02 mg/l indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) induced the maximum number (5.9) of axillary shoot formation which were relatively high (75%) when the explant was collected during May–June and the fifth nodes from the top of the growing shoots were used. -

Sandy Perkins Excursion Report ELLA BAY (HEATH POINT ) Sunday 15 April 2018 By Don Lawie The beach and dune walk planned for 11 March was cancelled due to heavy rain, local flooding and road washouts. Indeed, damage to Ella Bay Road was so bad that it was closed at Heath Point, the southern arm of Ella Bay, when we arrived on 15 April. Nothing daunted, we set off along the beach but were soon blocked by sharp volcanic rocks so diverted to the road and walked up a steep hill then returned to the beach beyond the rock barrier. The aim of the day was to discover what plants – trees, shrubs, vines etc.- grew in the area with fruits that would conceivably be eaten by shipwrecked mariners who were not knowledgeable about their edibility or otherwise. -

REPORT ON THE ICHTHYO FAUNA OF ANNA AND MADURAI DISTRICTS" TAMIL NADU T J.INDRA Zooloqrcal Survey of India, Madras INTRODUCTION During the years 1986-1987, Zoological Survey of India, Southern Regional Station, carried out two extensive surveys of Anna and Madurai Districts, in Tamil Nadu, under the Mopping Survey Scheme. Madurai District is traversed by the river Vaigai and its tributaries such as Theni, Surali and Moolar. These are seasonal rivers. Apart from these water ways there are few lakes i.e. Kodaikanal Lake and Berijam Lake in Anna District. Some water falls and hillstreams were also surveyed for their Ichthyo fauna. The Vaigai Dam across' Vaigai river near Madurai and Sathiar Dam also near Madurai were also surveyed. No comprehensive account on the fish fauna of Anna and Madurai Districts is available and therefore, a list of fishes from these districts is worth reporting. The data under each species includes its first reference, number of examples, their size range in mm. in standard length, area of collection, date of collection, geographical distribution and remarks (wherever variations are observed). In all there are 34 species in the present collection of 560 examples (503 adults and 57 juveniles) belonging to 9 families. Puntius arenatus (Day) is being reported for the first time from Vaigai Dam. Puntius filamentosus (Valenciennes) and Puntius mahecola (Val.) were treated as two distinct species in accordance with the findings of Selvaraj, Mathew and Abraham (1986-87). Jayaram (1981) was followed for the identification and distribution of fishes. -

Two different kinds of flies were caught from the pasture area by graziers during April 2020. With the help of Dept. of Agricultural Entomology, Centre for Plant Protection studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, it was identified that Haematopota nathani (Cleg fly) and Stenopogon ambryon (Robber fly) were the two dipteran flies causing annoyance and painful bite in sheep and graziers. H. nathani is the holotype found in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India and the identification of S. ambryon at SRRC, Mannavanur is the first report. Due to the annoyance of these two flies, the problems such as inadequate grass feeding, allergic reactions and weight loss to some extent were observed among sheep. It is recommended that the usage of the ideal trap methods to catch these Cleg flies and Robber flies, Bush cleaning in the grazing area of SRRC, Mannavanur, the studies on the vector potential of H. nathani in the transmission of the infectious diseases such as Bovine Viral Diarrhoea, Anthrax and Brucellosis in sheep and the effects of the salivary secretions of S. -
