This is strongly believed by a significant Christian community from the early centuries. These Christians were known as St. Thomas Christians. This church is one of the most ancient churches in Christendom. There were trade relations between India and the western countries even before Christ. Hence, there was the possibility of St. Thomas coming to India. The names of ivory, apes and peacocks in the palace of Solomon, mentioned in I Kings 10:22 and II Chronicles 9:21 in the Hebrew language, are found to be similar to the old Tamil names. It is to be remembered in this connection that Tamil was the language in use in Kerala up to the ninth century A.D. There is also clear evidence for the fact that monsoon winds were used for navigation in the first century A.D. St. Thomas baptized people, consecrated churches at Maliankara, Paloor, Paravoor, Gokamangalam, Niranam, Chayal and Kollam and ordained priests from four families. He was martyred at Mylapore near Madras in 72 A.D. Clear historical evidence regarding our church in the early centuries, is lacking.

    Consecration of Holy Myron: Frequently Asked Questions 1.) How many times has Holy Myron been consecrated in Malankara? The most recent (3 April, 2009, at Devalokam Aramana Chapel) consecration was the ninth instance. Syriac Patriarchs consecrated Holy Myron in 1876 and 1911, respectively by Patriarch Ignatius Peter IV (27 August, 1876) and Patriarch Ignatius Abdullah II Satuff (19 August, 1911). Mulanthuruthy Marthoman Church was the venue on both occasions. After the Catholicate was relocated in 1912, Catholicos Baselius Geevarghese II consecrated Holy Myron twice at the Old Seminary Chapel (22 April, 1932, and 20 April, 1951). Catholicos Baselius Augen I consecrated the Holy Myron once on 21 December, 1967, again at the Old Seminary Chapel. Catholicos Baselius Marthoma Mathews I consecrated the Holy Myron twice (1 April, 1977, and 25 March, 1988), the first instance at the Old Seminary Chapel and on the second occasion at the Devalokam Aramana Chapel.     Why the Peace of 1958 Foundered The re-united factions of the Malankara Orthodox Church belonged to the same stock, shared a common history, and dressed and worshipped alike, but what remained hidden from the naked eye were the structural fault lines which finally caused the eruptions of the 1970s, says Georgy S. Thomas Part 1. Orthodox Church Got A Few Things Right Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it _ George Santayana, The Life of Reason. The peace of 1958 was welcomed by the laity across the aisle, and ushered in a period of healing in the battered community. Families were reunited, calm prevailed in parishes, and slowly but surely, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church started burnishing its credentials once again as the Mother Church of India. Yet the peace foundered as what began as distrust and bickering in the 1960s erupted into a full- blown conflict by the 1970s. Many theories abound as to why the peace of 1958 did not last. Most of them focus on personalities and events. As a Sociologist, I am trained to consider them all as „noise‟, i.e. after-the-fact explanations or deliberate smokescreens. Instead, my interest was always in the structural foundations of the conflict. Through diligent research, I‟ve now unearthed enough material to formulate a credible hypothesis on what was the core issue for the collapse of the peace of 1958. This hypothesis has to be tested through vigorous debates involving the best minds from both sides of the divide. Those debates will hopefully spawn fresh and unique insights to build lasting peace in this divided original Church of India.

    Vol-7 Issue No. 12 D E C 19 E M B E R 20 Yeldho Lent (25 Days Lent) Starting 1st of December, the Holy Church will start the Holy Advent Fast (Yeldho Noumbu). This period of lent and fasting is a preparation in connection with the Feast of the Advent of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In Latin, the word Advent means "the coming". The message of Christmas is not only to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but as baptized Orthodox Christians, to celebrate his birth in each of our hearts. By observing this Advent Lent, we are preparing our hearts for our Lord to dwell in and ignite within it the fire of love, peace, and happiness. By partaking in this holy period of lent, we are also preparing ourselves for the Second Advent, which will be his second coming, when he will bring peace and justice to the world and give us hope for an eternal life with the Holy father. Take this time to come in unity, true Christian spirit, and welcome Christ into our lives. A prayer to the Virgin Mary O my Lady, Most-Holy Theotokos through your mediation and help, by the Grace and mercy of Your Only-Begotten Son our Lord, and God, and Savior, Jesus Christ; to Whom is due all glory, Honor and worship, together with His Eternal Father, and His All Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
