  • Site Sanitation Systems in Mining Area, Karnataka, India
Trends and Sustainability of Groundwater in Highly Stressed Aquifers (Proc. of Symposium JS.2 at 193 the Joint IAHS & IAH Convention, Hyderabad, India, September 2009). IAHS Publ. 329, 2009. Integrated assessment of risk for contaminated sites due to on- site sanitation systems in mining area, Karnataka, India H. K. RAMARAJU University Visveswaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), Jnanabharathi Campus, Bangalore University, Bangalore-560056, Karnataka, India [email protected] Abstract The sanitation coverage in rural households of India is very low. A field study was carried out in the Kolar Gold Field mining residential area. The residents of the study area depend on bore wells and resort to septic tanks for disposal of domestic waste. The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of septic tanks/low cost sanitation systems on groundwater and soil environment in the unsaturated zones of the soil. The hydraulic conductivity of the soil in the study area varied from 0.13 to 0.31 m day-1. Higher concentration of nitrates and chlorides in well waters show that groundwater is getting contaminated with on-site sanitation effluents. Higher concentrations of major metals, salts and gases were also observed because the geology of the particular area has influence on the quality of water. Based on the investigations, appropriate technological options are proposed. Key words bacteriological; hydrogeological; infiltration; nitrification; onsite sanitation systems; unsaturated zones; weathered rock INTRODUCTION Water for human consumption is perhaps becoming more vulnerable due to various strains on its qualitative and quantitative counts. Different types of pollution are making the issue more complicated and costly for mitigation.

  • Alarming Acidic Nature of Rainwater in the Industrial Zone of Visakhapatnam and Its Implication
    J. Ind. Geophys. Union ( April 2012 ) Vol.16, No.2, pp. 65-68 Alarming Acidic Nature of Rainwater in the Industrial zone of Visakhapatnam and its Implication. 1Y.Somu Naidu and 2C.Kavitha 1Department of Geophysics, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam-530 003 2Department of Electronics, GITAM University, Visakhapatnam ABSTRACT Industrialization began in the city of Visakhapatnam from 1950 onwards resulting in transfer of cations and anions to atmosphere. In particular, the commissioning of Steel plant, Chemical factory and Simhadri Thermal Power Corporation (STPC) during the period 1983 to 2003 polluted the ‘industrial atmosphere’ hazardously. The pH of rainwaters showed a steady decline from basic nature to a critical acidic value of 4.0. The alkaline agents like NH4 and Ca failed in - - + vain to neutralize the major acidic agents like NO3 and SO4. The ratio, SO 4 + NO 3 / NH 4 + Ca+, which was <1 during 1980s, reached a range of 2.0 to 5.9 by 2005. The average electrical conductivity also supports, the phenomenon with its ascent from 45μs/cm in 1983 to 156 μs/cm in 2005. Remedial measures need to be taken on priority, to arrest irreversible damage. INTRODUCTION Fertilizers Limited (CFL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Bharat Heavy Plates and Rainwater serves as a collector of many minor Vessels (BHPV), Hindustan Polymers Limited (HPL), constituents of the atmosphere. Chemical analysis Steel plant, Coastal Chemicals (CC), Andhra Cement of bulk precipitation (Heij & Erisman, 1995) helps Company (ACC) and Simhadri Thermal Power to reveal the composition of the air in which the Corporation (STPC). The industrial development, rain-bearing clouds have been formed.

After much endeavor, the institution is all set to go for the first cycle assessment and accreditation by NAAC. It was quite a task to comprehend, grasp and fulfill all the parameters of the SSR; especially so, because the College is spread over three shifts at three different timings. Connecting to and co-ordinating with 213 teachers and 76 non-teaching staff were difficult, but in the long run, fruitful. In between full session classes and with the trepidation of a nervous first- timer, keeping the deadline intact was a sweating struggle with time. All segments of the College were made to sit up and contribute their bit. Ms. Piyasa Bhowal and Sri Saumen Maity assisted us all the way through with their diligent typing. The Report published in the prescribed format, processes data in the following order: a) Preface, b) Executive Summary c) Profile of the Institution d) Criterion wise Analytical Report e) Departmental Evaluative Reports.
