Socio Economic PROFILE : GAJAPATI Socio economic PROFILE : GAJAPATI Introduction : Gajapati district has been named after Maharaja Sri Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Dev, the Ex-Raja Saheb of Paralakhemundi estate ( the 1st Prime Minister of Odisha state ), who is remembered for his contribution in formation of a separate Odisha Province and inclusion of Paralakhemundi estate in Odisha. Gajapati district came into being with effect from 2nd October 1992. Prior to this it was a part ( Sub-division ) of Ganjam district. Location : Gajapati district is one of the Southern located districts in Odisha. It lies between 83o 48’ to 84o 27’ E longitude and between 18o 46’ N to 19o 39’ N latitude. It is bounded by the Kandhamal district in North, Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh in South, Ganjam district in the East, and Rayagada district in the West. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot and high humidity during April to May and cold during December to January. The monsoon generally breaks during the month of June. Actual average annual rainfall of the district was 1293.2 m.m. during 2011, which is lower than the normal rainfall 1403.3 m.m. Area and Population : The district has an area of 4325 sq. kms. and 5.78 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 2.78 percent of the states territory and shares 1.38 percent of the States population. The density population of the district is 134 sq. kms. As against 270 person per sq. km. of the state. It has 1619 villages ( including 107 un-inhabited villages ) covering 7 blocks, 7 Tahasils and 1 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 39175 (6.80%) and schedule tribe population 31374 (54.3%). The literacy percentage of the district covers 53.5 against 72.90 of the State. Agriculture : During the year 2010-11 the net area sown was 56 thousand hectares against 5421 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 1136386 quintals, 143766 quintals maize, 13458 quintals ragi, 1530 quintals mung, 3468 quintals biri, 1123 quintals kulthi and 1842 quintals til 3332 quintals groundnuts, 38 quintals mustard and 97052 quintals sugarcane. During 2010-11 the total fertilizers used in Gajapati district is 1 above 5.20 thousand MT with a breakage of 3.08 MT thousand nitrogenous, 1.64 thousand MT phosphatic and 0.35 thousand MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 31 Kg. Irrigation : During the year 2010-11 It is reported by District Agriculture Officer, Gajapati that the Irrigation potential created during kharif and Rabi are 24482 hectares and 9415 hectares respectively through Minor Irrigation Projects namely Ram Sagar, Sita Sagar, Krishna Sagar in the district.. Education : There were 929 nos. of primary schools 417 nos. of middle schools and 148 of Secondary schools and 14 nos. of General Collages in the district during 2010-11. Besides, there is one no. of engineering collage in the district during the year 2010-11 to impart technical education. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt. Private individuals and voluntary organization in the district. There were 30 nos. of the Allopathic medical institutions and 136 nos. of Sub-centre with 273 beds facilities, 6 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 6 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2010-11. Veterinary Services : During the year 2010-11, 12 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 47 nos. of livestock Aid centres and 47 nos. of Artificial Insemination centres were functioning in Gajapati district of provide veterinary services to the people. Industry and Mining : During the year 2010-11, 34 nos. of small scale industries have established with total capital investment of about Rs. 671.00 lakhs with 169 nos. of employment generated in Gajapati District. Besides various kinds of handicraft works like horn work and cane work have been developed by the skilled workers and artisans of the district. Power : As on 31st March 2011, consumption of electricity covers 44.839 million units and villages so far electrified is 1222 which constitutes 80.8% of total villages in Gajapati district. 2 Tourist : There are four nos.. of tourist spots in Gajapati district namely paralakhemnid, Mahendra giri , Gandahati waterfall and Harabhangi projects as identified by department of Tourism, Government of Odisha. During 2011, 24133 nos. of domestic tourist were visited to the tourist centres of Gajapati districts. Transport and Communication : During 2010-11, 249 Kms. Of state highways, 68 Kms. Major district roads, 53 kms. of other district roads. 472 Kms. of rural roads, 5103 kms. Of Gram Panchayat Road and 105 Kms of forest roads are operating in the district. Besides, 54 kms. of Railway lines is under conversation to broad gauge from narrow gauge. The examples of food gathering among the tribals can be seen in every part of the country. Food gathering is an economic reality for tribals belonging to different cultural types. Hill-dwelling Kutia Kandha (PVTG) tribe of Kandhamal district, in addition to their conventional foods, rice, finger millet and a few popular pulses, they use many types of naturally occurring unusual additional food items such as carnals of mango, wild bean, tamarind, younglings of bamboo and wild mushrooms etc. Detail methods of processing of these items are unique and bitter tasting chemicals (alkaloids) of these food items are removed by repeated boiling and discarding the boiled water.
