Foreword

I am very glad to know that the Publication Division of Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES) has brought out District Statistical Hand Book-2018. This book contains key statistical data on various socio-economic aspects of the District and will help as a reference book for the Policy Planners, Administrators, Researchers and Academicians. The present issue has been enriched with inclusions like various health programmes, activities of the SHGs, programmes under ICDS and employment generated under MGNREGS in different blocks of the District.

Preface

The District Statistical Hand Book, Gajapati’ 2018 is a step forward for evidence based planning with compilation of sub-district level information. It furnishes block-wise statistics on Area & Population, Agriculture, Co-operation, Forest, Fisheries, Live Stock & Animal Husbandry, Industry & Mining, Power, Transport & Communication, Education, Health and Family Welfare, Banking, Revenue, Police, Crime and Judiciary, Labour & Employment, Public Distribution, Local Bodies, Election, Women & Child Welfare Programme, Poverty Alleviation Programme, Disaster Statistics etc. Besides, the publication provides district wise information on selected indicators which helps to access the relative position of the district in the State.

This publication will be a handy guide to the line Departments at the district and State level for sectoral and decentralized planning. This will also carter to the district and block level data requirement for Non-Government Organizations working in the field.

5 SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE: gajapati

1. Location: Gajapati district is one of the south-east located districts in Odisha. It lies between 83o48’ to 84o27’ east longitude and between 18o46’ to 19o39’ north latitude. It is bounded by the Kandhamala district in north, in south, district in the east and district in the west.

2. Area and Population: The district has an area of 4325 sq. kms and 5.78 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 2.78 percent of the state territory and shares 1.37 percent of the state population. The density of population of the district is 134 per sq. kms as against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 1612 villages (including 113 un- inhabited villages) covering 7 blocks 7 Tahasils and 1 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 39175 (6.8%) and schedule tribe population 313714 (54.3%). The literacy percentage of the district covers 53.5 against 72.9 of the state.

3. Climate: The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April to May and cold during December to January. The monsoon generally breaks during the month of June. Annual rainfall of the district was 1685.6 m.m in 2018 which is higher than the normal rainfall (1276.2 m.m).

4. Agriculture: During the year 2017-18, the net area sown was 54 thousand hectares against

3863 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 1214442 quintals, 252471

quintals maize, 5849 quintals ragi, 11904 quintals mung, 7596 quintals biri, 1134 quintals

kulthi, 2240 quintals till, 3288 quintals groundnuts, 189 quintals mustard and 6060 quintals

sugarcane. During 2017-18, the total fertilizers used in Gajapati district is about 4985 MT with

a breakage of 3575 MT nitrogenous, 1167 MT phosphatic and 243 MT pottasic and the

consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 42.26 Kg.

5. Irrigation: By the end of June 2017-18, it is reported by Deputy Director Agriculture, Gajapati that the total irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 30264 hectares and 11496 hectares respectively from different sources.

6. Co-operation: The district has 50 agricultural Co-operative societies with a membership of 48437. The loan advances is to the tune of Rs. 5104 lakh and loan outstanding stood at Rs. 4304.09 lakhs as of 2017-18. The agricultural credit Co-operative societies are more or less evenly distributed across the 7 Blocks of the district. Besides there are 3 non-agricultural credit Co-operative Societies and 1 marketing co-operative societies in the district. 7. Forest: District of Gajapati has abundant of Forest area that contributed 57.09% of the total geographical area of the district.

8. Veterinary Services During 2017-18, Milk production is 32.86 thousand MT, production of eggs is 130.28 lakhs nos. and production of meat is 2.16 thousand MT in this district. During 2017-18, 12 nos. of Hospitals and Dispensaries, 47 nos. of Livestock Aid centers and 46 Artificial Insemination Centers, 12 nos. of VAS & Additional VAS were functioning in the district.

9. Industry and Mining: During the year 2017-18, 369 nos. of micro small & medium enterprises have been established with total capital investment of about Rs. 1927.44 lakhs with 943 nos. of Employment generated in Gajapati district. Besides various kinds of handicraft works have been developed by the skilled workers and artisans of the district.

10. Power: During the year 2017-18, villages so far electrified as on 31.03.2018 is 1382 which constitutes 92.2 % to the total villages of the district.

11. Transport & Communication: During 2017-18, 162.90 Kms. of National Highways, 112.79 Kms. of state highways, 114.08 Kms. Major district roads, 264.67 Kms of other district roads, 3595.34 kms of Inter-village road, 2846.52 kms of Intra-village road, 685.46 Kms of village roads and 104.60 Kms of forest roads are operating in the district.

12. Education: There were 716 nos. of primary schools, 469 nos. of Up-primary schools, 149 nos. of secondary schools and 25 nos. of general colleges in the district during 2017-18. Besides, there are 1 no. of polytechnic school and 2 nos. of engineering colleges in the district during year 2017-18 to impart technical education. The pupil - teacher ratio in the primary, upper primary, Secondary School stood at 20, 20 and 19 respectively.

13. Health: The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 2 no. DHH, 8 nos. CHC, 21 nos. PHC of the Allopathic medical institutions including 136 nos. of Sub Centre in the district during the year 2017-18. There were 6 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 6 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2017-18.

14. Banking: As on December, 2018, there were 62 nos. of All Banks having 2343.66 crore rupees deposit and 633.19 crore rupees credit in the district. The district has banking branches network of 62 out of which 2 (3.23%) were in the urban area, 22 (35.48%) in semi- urban area and 199 (61.29%) in rural areas. The total number of ATMs in the district stood at 105.

15. Collection of Land Revenue: The total collection of land revenue in the district for 2017-18 was Rs. 185.06 lakh. The total collection of Tax in the district during 2017-18 was Rs. 735.71 Lakh.

16. Poverty Alleviation Programme: In the district total no. of Job card issued was 1.22 Lakh and total no. of person days generated was 24.52 lakh during the year 2017-18.

17. Disaster Scenario: In terms of Disaster activity the district is graded as slight zone for wind & cyclone, high risk zone for flood, very high risk zone for drought, moderate risk zone for earthquake & high risk zone for accident.


