Jamiroquai are a British funk and acid jazz band formed in 1992. Fronted by lead singer Jay Kay, Jamiroquai were initially the most prominent component in the London-based funk/acid jazz movement, alongside groups such as Incognito, the James Taylor Quartet, and the Brand New Heavies. Subsequent albums have explored other musical directions such as pop, rock, and electronica. Their best known track, particularly in North America, is "Virtual Insanity", which won four awards at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards as well as Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards. Adoring crowds hem him in. After five years away, Jamiroquai are back, and the cover of this new album is keen to convince prospective listeners that everything is still as one might expect. And so it is: Rock Dust Light Star fillets the heritage of funk and disco in order to serve it to a mainstream audience. There's refocused attention on live instrumentation, and a sound so crisp you could pick out a man adjusting his headpiece behind the horn section. Yet the songwriting rarely matches up to the production. Lyrical cliche abounds (blue skies follow grey clouds, tears fall like rain), but more galling are those frequent moments you hear snatches of music both familiar and interesting, only for them to disappear again.     KOOL & THE GANG, Jersey City, N.J. In 1964, Ronald Bell and Robert “Kool” Bell joined Jersey City neighborhood friends Robert “Spike” Mickens, Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Ricky Westfield, George Brown, and Charles Smith to create the Kool & the Gang sound - a unique blend of jazz, soul and funk. Throughout the seventies this blend produced a string of hits including “Jungle Boogie”, “Hollywood Swinging”, “Funky Stuff’ and “Summer Madness”. In 1979 the group penetrated the pop market by incorporating the smooth sounds of vocalist James “JT” Taylor with their infectious formula for making hits. Casey Kasem named Kool & the Gang the band of the eighties noting the bands steady stream of hits during the decade. “Ladies Night”, “Get Down on It” “Joanna” and the theme song to parties worldwide, “Celebration”, solidified Kool & the Gang’s musical legacy. Today, the group enjoys global fame and recognition and a following that spans generations due in part to the groups widely sampled catalogue. Kool & the Gang’s drum beats, bass, guitar and signature horn lines lace the tracks of numerous artists including the Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Cypress Hill, and P. Diddy.     Recensie: Jamiroquai***** Sportpaleis Merksem zaterdag 11 november 2017 foto © Gracia Live Recensie: Jamiroquai toverde in het Sportpaleis de zomer in onze glimlach in het Sportpaleis. Zeker, de groep rond zanger Jay Kay liet erg lang op zich wachten. Het optreden startte immers pas om half tien. Maar het was ook erg lang geleden naar concertnormen dat de Britse acid jazz en funkband nog eens optrad in ons land. Hun vorige optreden dateerde immers van 10 april 2011 in Vorst Nationaal. Op drie december in datzelfde jaar werd de groep verwacht in de Lotto Arena. Maar dat optreden werd geannuleerd om logistieke redenen en ook voor de opening van Paleis 12 op 10 juli 2013 bedankten ze kort nadat het concert aangekondigd was. Het was dan ook reikhalzend uitkijken om deze groep die ondertussen 25 jaar in het vak zit, nog eens live aan het werk te zien. De fans kregen een sublieme avond voorgeschoteld waar niets maar dan ook werkelijk niets op af te dingen viel. Wanneer het zaallicht uitgegaan is, horen we de intro van Automaton, de titeltrack van het gelijknamige album van de Britten en tevens het achtste studio-album dat dit voorjaar verscheen. In de visuals zien we een heerlijk old school pc commando in groene letters verschijnen: ‘Connection unstable. Re-connecting.' en later ‘Global infrastructure compromised.' na enkele nieuwsboodschappen over het potentieel van robots maar ook de gevaren voor de mens. Zo zien we een anti-cyborg protest in een nieuwsflash. Kay heeft zijn traditionele indianenveren ook geruild voor een veel futuristischer ogend lichtgevend model waarvan de pieken plat naar achter kunnen, zodat het geheel op een aërodynamische fietshelm lijkt.
