Middle Ages 500-1000 1 3 The Dark Age Church Period of Barbarian Invasions AD 500—1000 Introduction With the endorsement of the Emperor and obligatory church membership for all Roman citizens across the empire, Roman Christianity continued to change the nature of the Church, in stead of visa versa. The humble beginnings were soon forgotten in the luxurious halls and civil power of the highest courts and assemblies of the known world. Who needs spiritual power when you can have civil power? The transition from being the persecuted to the persecutor, from the powerless to the powerful with Imperial and divine authority brought with it the inevitable seeds of corruption. Some say that Christianity won the known world in the first five centuries, but a closer look may reveal that the world had won Christianity as well, and that, in much less time. The year 476 usually marks the end of the Christian Roman Empire in the West. -

Freie Universität Berlin 26 & 27 June 2014 New Antiquities: Transformations of the Past in the New Age and Beyond Nemanja Radulovic:´ The Role of Gnosticism in Neo-Bogomilism The subject of the paper will be the influence of “Gnosticism” and “Antiquity” on contemporary Neo-Bogomil movements. These include Universal White Brotherhood (Bulgaria) and the Slavic Church of Bogomils and Holy Grail (Croatia). Both claim to be succesors of medieval Bogomilism and both are still underresarched. In the process of constructing their sense of tradition, these movements in eclectic fashion heavily rely on the concept of “time immemorial” (e. g., ancient lands like Hyperborea, Atlantis, etc.), on Romantic constructs of the Slavic past (i. e., envisioning Bogomilism as primarily Slavic movement) and on the imagining of historical antiquity (Egypt, early Christianity and Gnosticism, and, to a lesser extent, ancient Greece). The last element of this bricolage will be presented in the paper. We will try to show how both movements – in spite of their differences – invent their own image of antiquity, focusing mostly on lines of succession allegedly stemming from Gnosticism. The paper will also illustrate how these groups use concepts and motifs characteristic of (or at least attributed to) ancient Gnostic groups. Comparison with other Neo-Gnostic groups in the West and with modern scholarly approaches to Gnosticism will thus show what Neo-Bogomils are interested in, namely, the construction of their own identities. Heresy Handout: A Convenient Guide to Eternal Damnation Christianity from its inception had difficulty maintaining its tenets in a population as diverse as Europe's. Strange mutations of Christianity kept popping up and they had to be reintegrated into the mainstream church. The "official" standard of belief is orthodoxy. On the other hand, heresy (or heterodoxy) refers to "unofficial" beliefs conflicting with the doctrine of the church fathers. Heresy becomes an actual crime under the Theodosian Code (438 A.D.), and being a heretic means damnation according to medieval thinkers. Most heresies fall into four general tendencies: (1) Dualistic heresies argued that two equally powerful spirits--a benevolent deity and a malevolent counterpart--were in constant warfare to control the universe. In orthodox medieval Christianity, the church fathers interpreted Satan as a being inferior to God. The devil--though rebellious--is merely a fallen angel who carries out God's will (i.e., he only torments or tempts humanity when God allows him to, á la Job). Dualistic heresies tended to see the two forces as equals, and many argued that the material world was entirely evil, in contrast with the orthodox position that the creation of God was “good, but fallen.” (2) Antinomianism covers any heresy that suggests an individual's religious experience outweighs the authority of church hierarchy, its scripture, or canon law. Arguing the scriptures are self-contradictory is also considered antinomianism. (3) Docetism occurs in any heresy that suggests that Christ was a being of pure spirit rather than having a corporeal body. Thus he never really "died" on the cross. -

Pope Nikita of Constantinople, who belonged to heretic Bogomil church of Dragovitia (in Aegean Macedonia), known for its strict dualistic orientation, chaired the assembly. There he speaks of the existence of churches of Romania (i.e. Eastern Roman empire), Dragometia, Melingia, Bulgaria and Dalmatia, and points out that they are separated from the churches of old Rome and Constantinopolitana Nova Roma, and that they are strong and live in peace. Introduction : The mediaeval heresies were convulsive reaction on the feudal oppression and widespread corruption of the Christian church. When Constantin I the Great made the Christianity official religion of the Roman empire he couldn’t predict that the Christian church will became one with the power of the government. At first it was meant to be in the service of the state and its supreme ruler, the emperor, but the things went wrong, for the rulers and for the Christianity as well. Further, following the division of the Roman empire in Eastern and Western parts, the church refined its political doctrine, and developed its structure in a way that could penetrate and absorb the function of the government to its purposefulness. Thus abandoning its own foundations based on the teachings as recorded in the Old and New Testament. -

The study defines Gnosticism in terms of its pattern of prevalent characteristics and traces the course of Gnosticism and its emergence as the Albigensianism of the Middle Ages. Using the finding of Hans Soderberg's La Religion des Cathares: Etudes, sur le gnosticisme de la basse antiquite et du moyen Sge. as a point of departure through the analysis of documents discovered since 1949, the study shows that Gnosticism and the Albigensian heresy represent a continued tradition of religious expression as a recognizable alternative to the accepted and established institutions of Christianity in the Western world. -

The Making of the Slavs: History and Archaeology of the Lower Danube
The Making of the Slavs This book offers a new approach to the problem of Slavic ethnicity in south- eastern Europe between c. and c. , from the perspective of current anthropological theories. The conceptual emphasis here is on the relation between material culture and ethnicity. The author demonstrates that the history of the Sclavenes and the Antes begins only at around . He also points to the significance of the archaeological evidence, which suggests that specific artifacts may have been used as identity markers. This evidence also indicates the role of local leaders in building group boundaries and in leading successful raids across the Danube. The names of many powerful leaders appear in written sources, some being styled “kings.”Because of these military and political developments, Byzantine authors began employing names such as Sclavenes and Antes in order to make sense of the process of group identification that was taking place north of the Danube frontier.
