The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998).

    HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

    NIPSEY HUSSLE Founded in 2010, Hussle’s All Money In made an epochal debut with its very first release, “THE MARATHON,” marking Hussle’s fifth official mixtape and follow-up to his introductory “BULLETS AIN’T GOT NO NAME” trilogy. Named among XXL’s “100 Best Mixtapes of 2010,” the collection was quickly followed by 2011’s “THE MARATHON CONTINUES” and then 2013’s “CRENSHAW,” the latter proving a media sensation when over one thousand first edition cassettes priced at $100 each were sold out in less than 24 hours at an All Money In pop-up shop in Fairfax, CA. 2014 saw Hussle embark on the nationwide “Crenshaw Tour” before unleashing his next mixtape, “MAILBOX MONEY,” this time available in a 100-copy limited edition priced at $1000. “SLAUSON BOY 2” made its debut in 2016, comprising 17 tracks first released as part of Hussle’s weekly #MarathonMonday series. That same year also saw Hussle team with YG for the landmark single, “FDT (F*** Donald Trump),” praised by the Los Angeles Times as “the most prophetic, wrathful and unifying protest song of 2016.” At the end of 2017, Hussle announced his independent label All Money In LLC entered into a strategic deal with Atlantic Records. Hussle’s debut album ‘Victory Lap,’ released February 16, was the first project dropped under the joint venture. During the same time, Spotify collaborated with social justice activists as a means of philanthropy and brand management. Focusing on two playlists intended to promote the Black Lives Matter movement (2013–) and support protests against the U.S. “Muslim Ban” (2017–2020), this thesis explores how Spotify’s curators and artists navigate the tensions between activism and capitalism as they advocate for social justice.     More than Just a Rapper: Mainstream and Alternative Media’s Depiction of Nipsey Hussle By Jonathan Joshua Hazlewood Master of Arts, Wilfrid Laurier University, 2020 THESIS Submitted to the Department/Faculty of Criminology In partial fulfilment of the requirements for Master of Arts in Criminology Wilfrid Laurier University © Jonathan Joshua Hazlewood 2020 Abstract Mainstream and alternative media depict individuals differently from one another. In stories covering African American rappers and homicide victims, mainstream and alternative stories use images, phrases, and people to portray certain ideas to their audience. In terms of mainstream news outlets, stories associate criminality onto African American homicide victims and rappers through labeling them as brutes, focusing on the crimes they commit, and highlighting criminal associations (Aquil, 2018; Cochran, 2015; Dukes & Gaither 2018; Wright & Washington, 2019). While alternative outlets have offered sympathetic and well-rounded representations that depict the life, personal accomplishments, and good deeds of an African American victim (Irene, Deckard, & Rodriguez, 2016). Using a Social Constructionist lens, this thesis examines alternative and mainstream media’s depiction of Nipsey Hussle. The goal of this paper was to determine if narratives and labels used with African American homicide victims and rappers are present in the media’s depiction of Nipsey Hussle.     “Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814”—Janet Jackson (1989) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Ayanna Dozier (guest post)* Janet Jackson Revolution Televised: “Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation” “Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814” is a significant piece of Black feminist cultural production that pioneered new modes of using popular music to convey socio-cultural commentary to a larger mainstream audience. Conceptual in form, the album’s impact on youth culture is made possible by Jackson’s attentiveness to the televisual as seen in the album’s music videos and its incorporation of television culture in its sonic arrangement. Whereas Jackson’s contemporaries like Madonna, Prince, and even her brother Michael, adapted to television from radio early in their career, Jackson was one of the first true simultaneous audio/visual artists of the 1980s. What emerges from this practice is an album that without having seen its accompanying videos feels visual and cues images to the imagination upon each listen. “Rhythm Nation 1814” responds to what media historian John B. Thompson writes as the verisimilitude of mediated historicity. Mediated historicity defines the growing access we have to media images of the past that rather than represent history or an event we did not live through they simply 1 become history.0F “Rhythm Nation” materializes this strenuous period in which our lives, communication, and perception of time and space become mediated through the televisual and rarely exist outside of it. During an era where “I want my MTV” was feverishly chanted by teenagers across the country, “Rhythm Nation 1814” is a time capsule of how television began to permeate our quotidian experiences in an irrevocable way.
