Jones Arizona Geological Survey Contributed Map 04-A Tucson, AZ 2003 Introduction The Phoenix Mountains, located within the Phoenix metropolitan area of central Arizona, are a northwest-trending, uplifted fault block that extends for about 13 km (8 miles) from Moon Hill in the northwest to Camelback Mountain in the southeast (Fig. 1). The area includes a main range, with 420 m (1,378 ft) of local relief, as well as several isolated peaks. The geologic mapping for this study covers the main part of the range, including (from northwest to southeast) Moon Hill, Shaw Butte, North Mountain, Stoney Mountain, Dreamy Draw, Squaw Peak, and the informally named Quartzite Ridge. The main goals of this study were to document the bedrock geology, reconstruct the geologic history, and produce a 1:24,000 geologic map of the range. The area contains a remarkable stratigraphic sequence that records the formation of continental crust in the region as it evolved from an oceanic setting to a more continental setting. The rocks have been cleaved and steeply tilted, providing a well-exposed traverse through this exceptional sequence. The range also contains spectacular Proterozoic (Precambrian) structures, which document the extreme deformation that affected the crust soon after it had formed. Lookout Moon Mtn. Photography by the author. ost cacti are easy to grow in southern Arizona, Mespecially if you are willing to spare a little bit of water for young seedlings in the heat of mid-sum- mer (40-45˚C) and can keep the cactus-eating rabbits at bay. The large-species of barrel cacti in my yard will typically increase their girth by three to five centime- tres each year, which is nice but nevertheless hardly extraordinary. So with such exemplary horticultural conditions for most cactus species, why would any- body in southern Arizona ever wish to visit a botanical garden? Maybe it is because you expect to see rare species. Yet, for the most part, even those are com- mercially readily available to the average hobbyist. For Fig. 2 Pachycereus pringlei, Fouquieria diguetii (left), Fouquieria columnaris (background) me, the best reason to visit a botanical garden is to see mature well-grown specimens of plants that I can usu- ally only see as seedlings, and for that, the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix is a truly remarkable place. 'Swachh Bharat Pakhwada' by ENVIS Centres (1st June- 15th June, 2016) Swachh Bharat Abhiyan - A Brief Report Conceptualized by ENVIS Secretariat, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India World Environment Day The celebration of World Environment Day (WED) is a forty-four year old concept in world history. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) initiated the observance of this day to globally celebrate the spirit of positive environmental action. Every year, millions of individuals and organizations engage in various activities on this day which includes tree-planting drives, art exhibitions, social media campaigns, etc. This way, there is a build-up of a collective power of people belonging to different walks of life, leading to the generation of an exponential positive impact on the planet. The UN General Assembly declared June 5 as World Environment Day in the year 1972. Two years later in 1974, WED was celebrated for the first time, with the United States hosting it. The theme for this first ever WED was 'Only One Earth'. Since then, WED has been trending every year with a different theme. The most recent theme of WED (for 2016) was 'Go Wild for Life: Zero Tolerance for the Illegal Wildlife Trade'. Angola was the global host country of WED 2016. As a consequence of man's insatiable greed, illegal trade in wildlife product is booming in an alarming rate. Ecosystems are getting corrupted and, the killing and smuggling of different species are leading them to extinction. Wildlife crime is endangering a number of species of elephants, rhinos, tigers, gorillas and sea turtles, along with many other lesser-known victims. -

Estimating Soil Seed Bank Characteristics in Ponderosa Pine Forests Using United States Department of Agriculture Vegetation and Forest-Floor Data Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station Research Note Scott R. Abella and Judith D. Springer RMRS-RN-35 September 2008 Abstract—Soil seed banks are important for vegetation management because they contain propagules of species that may be considered desirable or undesirable for site colonization after management and disturbance events. Knowledge of seed bank size and composition before planning management activities facilitates proactive management by providing early alerts of exotic species presence and of abilities of seed banks to promote colonization by desirable species. We developed models in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests in northern Arizona to estimate the size and richness of mineral soil seed banks using readily observable vegetation and forest- floor characteristics. Regression models using three or fewer predictors explained 41 to 59 percent of the variance in 0- to 2-inch (0- to 5-cm) seed densities of total and native perennial seed banks. Key predictors included aboveground plant species richness/10.8 ft2 (1 m2), litter weight and thickness, and tree canopy type (open or closed). Both total and native perennial seed banks were larger and richer in plots containing: (1) species-rich understories, (2) sparse litter, and (3) tree canopy openings. A regression tree model estimated that seed bank density of native perennials is 14-fold greater if aboveground plant richness exceeds eight species/10.8 ft2, forest-floor leaf litter is < 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick, and tree canopies are open. Introduction Soil seed banks are important for vegetation man- agement in ponderosa pine forests in at least four ways.
