  • Fabian Society
SOS POLITICAL SCIENCE & PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION M.A POLITICAL SCIENCE II SEM POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY: MODERN POLITICAL THOUGHT, THEORY & CONTEMPORARY IDEOLOGIES UNIT-III Topic Name-fabian socialism WHAT IS MEANT BY FABIAN SOCIALISM? • The Fabian Society is a British socialistorganisation whose purpose is to advance the principles of democratic socialism via gradualist and reformist effort in democracies, rather than by revolutionary overthrow WHO STARTED THE FABIAN SOCIETY? • Its nine founding members were Frank Podmore, Edward R. Pease, William Clarke, Hubert Bland, Percival Chubb, Frederick Keddell, H. H. Champion, Edith Nesbit, and Rosamund Dale Owen. WHO IS THE PROPOUNDER OF FABIAN SOCIALISM? • In the period between the two World Wars, the "Second Generation" Fabians, including the writers R. H. Tawney, G. D. H. Cole and Harold Laski, continued to be a major influence on socialistthought. But the general idea is that each man should have power according to his knowledge and capacity. WHAT IS THE FABIAN POLICY? • The Fabian strategy is a military strategy where pitched battles and frontal assaults are avoided in favor of wearing down an opponent through a war of attrition and indirection. While avoiding decisive battles, the side employing this strategy harasses its enemy through skirmishes to cause attrition, disrupt supply and affect morale. Employment of this strategy implies that the side adopting this strategy believes time is on its side, but it may also be adopted when no feasible alternative strategy can be devised. HISTORY • This

The Conservative Drug Policy Reform Group, Limited Suite 15.17 Citibase, 15th Floor Millbank Tower 21-24 Millbank, Westminster London SW1P 4QP The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP The Prime Minister 10 Downing Street London SW1A 2AA 20 November 2020 Dear Prime Minister, As Chairman of the Conservative Drug Policy Reform Group, I am writing today with a comprehensive set of recommendations prepared by the CDPRG research team, to secure the future of the UK’s cannabidiol (CBD) industry. Though nascent, this industry is already valued at £300 million and it is predicted to grow to around £1 billion by 2025, equivalent to the entirety of the UK’s herbal supplement market in 2016. I am sure you will agree with me that this projected market growth, and the jobs, investment and R&D it attracts, needs safeguarding and stimulating rather than inhibiting. This fulfilment depends on the practicality of the legislations safeguarding this burgeoning industry, which is why I am writing to strongly recommend that the UK votes in favour of recommendations to be proposed on 02 December 2020 by the World Health Organisation at the 53rd United Nations Session on the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), of which the UK is a signatory. The WHO recommends adding the following footnote to the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, to read: "Preparations containing predominantly cannabidiol and not more than 0.2 percent of delta-9- tetrahydrocannabinol [THC] are not under international control”. This harmonises with a ruling issued this week from the European Union that member states may not prohibit the marketing of CBD lawfully produced in other member states.

  • The Media's Use of Lesbian Stereotypes
Canadian Political Science Review 3(3) September 2009 Changing the Game Changes the Frame: The Media’s Use of Lesbian Stereotypes in Leadership versus Election Campaigns Joanna M. Everitt (University of New Brunswick – St. John) and Michael Camp (St. Thomas University)1 Abstract This study uses content analysis and interviews to examine how the media reported the candidacy and campaign of Allison Brewer, the openly lesbian leader of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party. The “news values” that govern political reporting led the media to construct Brewer’s political persona during her leadership campaign using stereotypes of lesbians, activists and women in politics. This stereotypic treatment occurred at a point in her political career when impressions are most important. A year later, during the provincial election campaign her newsworthiness as a “new” or a “contentious” presence in politics had diminished, but had not completely disappeared. Introduction In September 2005 Allison Brewer was elected leader of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party (NDP). While she ran on a platform emphasizinG health care, education, the environment and increased support for social workers (Brewer interview 2006) what cauGht the media’s attention was her personal identity as an out lesbian. Despite the fact that her tenure on the political stage was not long (she stepped down in the fall of 2006 after losinG in the September provincial election), her experiences with the media durinG both the leadership campaign and the general election are of academic interest as they allow us to examine how the media cover relatively unknown political fiGures who happen to be homosexual.

One of my proudest achievements here has been the LGBT+ Conservatives Candidates’ Fund, which has supported so many people into parliament and raised tens of thousands of pounds. As the fund matures it is moving into a new governance structure, and I hope to play a role in that future. I am thrilled to be succeeded by Elena Bunbury. I know that she will bring new energy to the organisation, and I hope it will continue to thrive under her leadership. I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me on this journey. In particular Emma Warman, Matthew Green and John Cope who have provided wise counsel as Deputy Chairman. To Sean Anstee who has transformed the finances of the organisation.
