Guatemala DUKEENGAGE in GUATEMALA Implementing Entrepreneurial Solutions in Rural Communitie DUKEENGAGE IN GUATEMALA Implementing entrepreneurial solutions in rural communities. This program is organized by Social Entrepreneur Corps (SEC) in collaboration with DukeEngage. Dates: May 26 – July 20, 2019 (Dates subject to change up until the point of departure.) Service Themes • Community Development/Outreach • Economic & Workforce Development/Social Enterprise • Health/Human Services Program Focus Designing and implementing entrepreneurial and educational solutions with constituents in rural and semi-urban communities in the highlands of Guatemala. Possible field sites are Nebaj, Xela and San Juan La Laguna. Community Development/Outreach: students will support designing, testing, and implementing models and services that create opportunities for underserved and marginalized families of Guatemala to improve the quality of their lives. Economic & Workforce Development/Social Enterprise: students will assist Soluciones Comunitarias in its efforts to empower the team of local leaders in providing solutions for people of underserved and marginalized communities. Health/Human Services: students will assist with the goal of providing services to underserved and marginalized populations of Guatemala that will empower them to improve the quality of their lives. Curricular Connections: While all students are welcome to apply, this program may be of particular interest to students studying social entrepreneurship, business, marketing, international studies, and Spanish. Program Leaders • Greg Van Kirk, Co-Founder, Social Entrepreneur Corps and Community Empowerment Solutions. Greg is an Ashoka Lemelson Fellow, Ashoka Globalizer, and a Schwab Foundation “Social Entrepreneur of the Year for 2012 (Latin America).” He has served as a consultant for different international organizations, has contributed as “Social Entrepreneur in Residence,” and has worked with Columbia University, NYU, Marquette University, Indiana University, University of San Diego, and Arizona State University. He has taught social entrepreneurship at Columbia University and NYU. • Luke burchell, Guatemala Country Director, Social Entrepreneur Corps and Community Empowerment Solutions Regional Director, Chiapas, Mexico. Luke has worked with Social Entrepreneur Corps since 2009. He has worked on community focused social innovation development in Guatemala, South Africa, and Mexico. • Maria Luz Giambartolomei, Global Strategic Advisor, Social Entrepreneur Corps and Community Empowerment Solutions. Maria Luz has served in the organization since 2008 after working for different development organizations in India and Guatemala. She has consulted for different international organizations in Latin America and Africa. • Martha Reeves, PhD, Associate Director, Markets and Management Studies, Duke University; DukeEngage Guatemala Faculty Fellow. DukeEngage 2019 Program Profile – Guatemala Program Overview Upon arrival in country, SEC interns participate in a two-week training course to enhance cultural and country understanding, increase Spanish language capabilities, learn about concepts and best practices related to development work/social entrepreneurship, and gain the content and technical skills necessary to support clients/beneficiaries during the field-work segments of the program. Interns will work with SEC leadership to identify opportunities to make an impact through social innovations, including the Empowerment Model and Grassroots Consulting, and to define client/beneficiary and community-based desired outcomes. This segment provides participants with the necessary knowledge base and skills to be successful in the upcoming fieldwork segment. The remaining time will be spent in different rural and semi-urban locations implementing community development projects. Participants will be assigned to their fieldwork sites by the local team during the final days of the foundation building segment of the program. Students should be open as to where they are placed. The SEC mission – “change the world, change your world” – is implemented through a DukeEngage program in Guatemala that fosters: • Social Entrepreneurship Impact Immersion: Participants will study and think critically about aid strategies and social entrepreneurship models with expert leadership; and they will learn technical “tools” and apply them in a dynamic and challenging developing world environment while traveling to a variety of regions and engaging with a multitude of rural communities, local organizations, small businesses, and entrepreneurs. • Pioneer Social Innovation: SEC is constantly looking for new ways to engage with communities and build on current relationships in communities with organizations and micro-entrepreneurs. Interns play a direct role in designing and developing innovative social entrepreneurial intervention based on local needs through their immersion and engagement with families, communities, organizations, and entrepreneurs over the course of eight weeks. • Empowerment: We believe individuals, families, and communities are empowered to change their own lives and the lives of those around them when they have the ability, means, and inspiration. Students’ work with SEC intervenes and provides a positive impact in one or more of these areas based on our clients’ expressed needs and desires, taking into account their challenges and opportunities. Duration: Eight-week program includes foundation building (ten days), fieldwork immersion (three weeks), reflection (one week), fieldwork immersion (two weeks), and achievements (one week). Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes Through participation in innovative development work within a challenging cultural, language learning, and grassroots environment, SEC ensures that interns will: • Gain insight into the opportunities, inherent risks, and limitations involved in international development; • Have ample opportunities to significantly increase Spanish language proficiency; • Observe, learn, and live in a diversity of cultural settings; • Experience homestay living with local families; • Have the opportunity to work with and support an array of development and relief organizations; and • Be offered the opportunity to make a significant contribution in a guided and structured manner working side- by-side with field-based social entrepreneurs. Through classes, case studies, discussions, analysis, and living with the local population, as well as through visits and active participation with local NGOs and social entrepreneurs, interns will make a profound community impact while gaining in-depth knowledge of local economic development. The desired social entrepreneurship outcomes for the program are that interns: • Will have gained an understanding of the key differences, advantages, and disadvantages of varied international relief and economic development models; • Will feel knowledgeable with regards to the challenges and opportunities inherent in the creation of successful social entrepreneurship models, implementation strategies, and tactics; DukeEngage 2019 Program Profile – Guatemala • Will have learned and practiced effective strategies for training, mentoring and supporting local social entrepreneurs; and • Will have contributed to the identification and design of new social entrepreneurship opportunities for local constituents. The desired cultural outcomes for the program are that interns: • Will have gained an understanding of the challenges confronting the rural and urban population specifically; • Will feel comfortable interacting with the local population on a general, family, and individual level; • Will have gained an understanding of the cultural and professional "dos" and "don'ts" of living and working in both rural and urban development environments such as those in Guatemala; and • Will understand how the local population lives and works as well as what they aspire to achieve. The desired Spanish language outcomes for the program are that interns: • Will have significantly improved their conversational Spanish capabilities; and • Will have gained an understanding of the nuances of language in developing country environments. Partnership Opportunities Placement will be based on the application and on the interview that students will have during the selection process with a leadership member of SEC. Grassroots Consulting • Plan and prepare workshops, presentations, and training sessions that “teach a person to fish” and aim to empower small business clients to strengthen, improve, or enhance their work. • Deliver one-on-one consulting, group trainings, community outreach/marketing development, and short-term human resource assistance to a variety of clients in a different setting. • Get hands-on grassroots experience with clients that may lack knowledge on how to use a computer; presentations will be made using poster boards more frequently than power point, and planning skits to demonstrate important points may be more valuable than graphs and charts. Examples from past workshops have focused on topics that include: leadership, strategic/tactical development and execution, SWOT analysis, administration, human resources, financial management, program development and implementation, income generation, partnership development, evaluation, marketing, positioning, planning, technical skills, organizing skills, and other areas

    Greg Van Kirk The MicroConsignment Model Bridging the “Last Mile” of Access to Products and Services for the Rural Poor Innovations Case Narrative: The MicroConsignment Model Until recently, Carolina Amesquita, the principal at La Escuela Ramona Jil primary school in Chimaltenango, Guatemala, lamented daily that her students were drink- ing contaminated water directly from the tap, often contracting gastrointestinal ill- nesses that kept them out of school. Others in the community were suffering too. Juana Ramirez, an expert weaver in the village of San Mateo, could no longer see well enough to sort her threads by color. Her productivity had plummeted, further stressing her already struggling family. While preparing meals over an open-pit fire in her home, as Guatemalan women have done for generations, Alva Rios was inhaling harmful smoke for hours each day. Julia Garcia was spending more and more of her family income on electricity bills, while Benito Ramirez had no elec- tricity in his home and at night had to study by candlelight. These and similar problems confronting thousands of rural Guatemalans have now been solved through the hard work of two Guatemalan women. Yoly Acajabon and Clara Luz de Montezuma, local homemakers in their mid-40s, started their own enterprises in 2004 with no entrepreneurial experience or start-up capital. Working within the MicroConsignment Model (MCM), these extraordinary women are providing low-income villagers with essential products and services that help improve their health, nutrition, and economic situations—and they are earning incomes for their own families while doing so.     How New Regulatory, Financial and Technology Bold Ideas Can Grow Microgrid-driven Access to Energy Executive summary Access to energy in the rural, remote parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America drives both economic development and higher standards of living. Until recently however, progress in rural electrification has been slow as one in seven global citizens still lack adequate access to electricity. Fortunately, progress in four key areas— government regulation, financing, technol- ogy, and training—have now opened the doors to accelerated rural electrification, especially through microgrids. A key driver for accelerating Access to Energy, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), serves as a guidepost for ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sus- tainable and modern energy for all. This paper reviews both methods and cases that are now driving Access to Energy pro- ject best practices. Schneider Electric White Paper 2 Introduction Advancements in off-grid electrification have opened up new possibilities for the 1.1 billion people worldwide who still have no access to electricity. 1 This shocking num- ber is nearly the equivalent of the U.S and European’s populations combined. How- ever, new, digitalization-driven business models are now making it more feasible and affordable for electrification projects to be implemented in those regions of the globe that have, until now, been cut off and left to fend for themselves. Our many movements for social change are needed, perhaps more now than ever. We believe that we are all united in this quest. Of course, our understanding of the need for social change is not enough. With the va- riety of methods to impact the world virtually at our fingertips, we are driven to identify effective practices, to put knowledge into action, and to indeed go about making the world a better place. Just as important is what we teach our undergraduates and graduate students about how they can join in this quest and what they should learn in order to do so. By many measures, this is a generation who believes that change can result by creating their own approaches to address society’s ills or through their volunteer efforts, yet often these strategies do not change the fundamental, underlying conditions. In our limited time together during this think tank, we aim to better understand how we in higher education and the social innovation and civic engagement fields can better teach about the wide range of approaches to social change – and to help discern when one or another approach might be most effective. By gathering academics, students, and practitioners to have this conversation, we are eager to share perspectives.
