Appendix

The following information was shown to respondents before they answered the survey so that they had sufficient understanding about the topic in order to answer the questions:

The European Union law currently states that all animals farmed for food production (e.g. cows, sheep, chickens) must be made unconscious (stunned using electricity, gas or a stun gun) before they are killed using a knife to cut the throat which causes the animal to bleed until death.

However, in the context of some religious practices the European Union law allows countries to slaughter animals while still conscious (i.e. without being stunned beforehand).

An alternative stunning practice that can be used in these circumstances is called ‘reversible electrical stunning,’ where the animal is made unconscious for a short period of time, after which the animal regains consciousness. This practice is compatible with slaughter in the context of religious practices that require the animals to be still alive when the throat is cut.
