APRIL 2019 NEWSLETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Wow – the Winx phenomenon culminated a couple of weeks ago and wasn’t it a great ride! Not only was the racing public in New South Wales swept up in the reality that they were witnessing greatness that would probably not be seen again in their lifetimes, but her fame went worldwide. A large part of the globalisation of Winx’s popularity comes down to her owners, who were incredibly generous with sharing not only Winx, but their own time in communicating to the public. Hats off too, to Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman for completing a perfect team. The Championships, which not only included top class Group racing, but also Country and Provincial Championships also served to highlight the current good health of racing in New South Wales. The ‘down side’ of our industry is the danger that not only jockeys, but also trainers and ground staff are exposed to every day in the process of carrying out their professions. I am very pleased that NSW Racehorse Owners has invited Spinal Cord Injuries Australia to be our charity of choice for Racing’s Night of Champions in August. They are currently supporting Tye Angland with rehabilitation and peer support and Tye has indicated that he fully endorses the relationship. Please save the date for this year’s Racing’s Night of Champions, 15 August 2019. Our Autumn Carnival Luncheon on All Aged Stakes Day was well attended, especially considering the number of people away for the Easter Long Weekend. We had seven new members sign up on the day and everyone agreed it was a great way to enjoy a top class day’s racing.

  • The 97Th Winx Stakes Previously Known As: the Warwick Stakes 1400M / Group 1 / Weight for Age / First Run: 1923
Form Focus Fact Sheet 2020 The 97th Winx Stakes Previously Known As: The Warwick Stakes 1400m / Group 1 / Weight For Age / First Run: 1923 The Warwick Stakes (6 furlongs) was first staged at Randwick on Saturday, September 1, 1923. The race went to the Victorian visitor Sunburst, trained by Eric Connolly and ridden by George Harrison in front of an estimated attendance of 35,000. In 1925 the distance was changed to 7 furlongs, then extended to 8 furlongs in 1926. Reverting to 7 furlongs in 1938, the race became 1400m in 1972 (when metrics commenced). In 2000 & 2001, the race was run over 1300m. In 2018, the Warwick Stakes was upgraded to Group One status and re-named the Winx Stakes. Traditionally staged in mid to late August, the Warwick Stakes has been conducted at either Warwick Farm or Randwick, although Canterbury hosted the 2000 edition. Winners over the first 50 years include icons such as Tulloch, Bernborough, Amounis, Chatham (x2), Flight, Limerick (x3), High Caste, Windbag, Sky High (x2) and Whittier. Kingston Town (x3), Super Impose(x2), Shaftesbury Avenue, Filante (x2), Sunline, Lonhro (x2) and Winx (3) are notable winners over the past 40 years. Training legend Tommy Smith holds the trainers record with 10 winners, from 1953 (Tarien) to 1982 (Kingston Town). Jack Denham and Chris Waller have each trained five winners of the race. Darby Munro holds the record wins for a jockey with 6 – Rogilla (Dead heat in 1935), Allunga (1937), Beaulivre (1940), Katanga (1943), Removal (1945) and Tarien (1954). Hugh Bowman is one behind Munro, having scored three times on Winx (2016/2017/2018) plus Royal Descent (2015) and Racing to Win (2006).

  • August 2019 Newsletter
AUGUST 2019 NEWSLETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK The Racing’s Night of Champions has come and gone and we are settling back down after a hectic couple of months’ organisation. Winx dominated the awards for the final time, winning Champion Miler, Champion Middle Distance and of course Champion Horse of the Year, prompting a standing ovation. it was great to see other groups of happy owners taking up the other awards, the results being outlined in the full report in this newsletter. All the feedback we received from the evening was very positive and there was a fantastic atmosphere in the room, in part due to the new alliance with Spinal Cord Injuries Australia. They produced a touching, short video featuring injured jockeys Tye Angland and Kate Nipperess, who are clients of SCIA. The rehabilitation and peer support provided by SCIA is a huge help to members of the racing industry. This was followed by an interview with Tye on stage, who showed that the courage and positivity he demonstrated on the race track has not left him. With Jane Henning only starting in the role of CEO at the beginning of the year, and the charity also being completely new to the scale and therefore work involved in securing auction items and making this event a success, it was particularly pleasing to see the night unfold. Our thanks also go out to Infinity Events’ Pauline Lamb, whose experience and behind the scenes work always ensures a successful Racing’s Night of Champions. Special mention should also go to Tommy Berry, who donated his 2019 breeding right to Vancouver.

But while this racing is always at our very core we are not a Club without our Members. #FUNOFFTRACK As we reflect on the previous year and particularly the past six months it is Australian Turf Club Members who should be at first singled out. Members are undoubtedly the lifeblood of this Club. Amid the disruption of COVID-19 when some of this world-class racing was conducted without Members or spectators on course we relied on your great passion and loyalty more than ever.
