Open Letter to the Premier of Nsw About Coal Seam Gas, from Over 600 Businesses, Organisations and People of North West Nsw 2 THE LAND Thursday December 07, 2017 theland.com.au ADVERTISEMENT OPEN LETTER TO THE PREMIER OF NSW ABOUT COAL SEAM GAS, FROM OVER 600 BUSINESSES, ORGANISATIONS AND PEOPLE OF NORTH WEST NSW. To theHon Gladys Berejiklian, Premier, Protect the North West region from coal seam gas. We are writing to seek your help in protecting our communities, natural areas and livelihoods from irreparable damage from coal seam gas extraction and ask you to visit the North West to hear our concerns. Coal seam gas is ariskyand polluting industry. The coal seam gasfield proposed by Santos near Narrabri poses unprecedented challenges for New South Wales. It is thelargest development ever considered under NSW’s current planning system and threatens to affect water resources and natural ecosystems for centuries to come. We supportyour recent response to Prime Minister Turnbull, rejecting his calls to fast-track assessment of the Narrabri Gas Project. The Environmental Impact Statement for the project is grossly inadequate. Criticism from the Federal Government’s Independent Expert Scientific Committee and independent scientific reviewers confirms that it was not adequate and its water modelling was unsatisfactory. Arecord22,700 people formally objected to the project. These submissions must be treated seriously, but it is routine in New South Wales for the Planning Assessment Commission to hold superficial “public hearings” that remove legal rights for objectors. We seek the following commitments from you to protect the North West from this threat: 1. That anew, thorough and adequate Environmental Impact Statement will be released for public review once Santos has collected and analysed the necessary data; 2. That full merits appeal rights for objectors will be retained for the Narrabri CSG Project; 3. That no coal seam gas project is approved in New South Walesuntil it’s known that surrounding water users, communities, industries and natural ecosystems will not be impacted. When new to your Premiership, you acknowledged that the community is not comfortable with the expansion of coal seam gas and that the government has an obligation to listen to this concern. We hereby invite you to visit North West New South Walestomeet the primary producers, conservationists, Traditional Owners and townspeople who would be directly impacted by this gasfield and to hear our concerns. • Coonamble Gilgandra Geological Summary
Geological summary Coonamble–Gilgandra region Coonamble–Gilgandra region This summary is an initiative by the Office of the Land and Water Commissioner in response to community enquiries about the geology of the Coonamble– Gilgandra region. The enquiries are particularly related to the proposed construction of a Western Slopes gas pipeline, to connect the Narrabri area to the existing Moomba–Sydney pipeline, which passes near Condobolin. This geological overview of the area around the proposed pipeline is based on publicly available geological data obtained by the Geological Survey of NSW and private companies during exploration. The NSW Government collects and archives all geological data from exploration activities in NSW to enhance understanding of the geology of the state. Narrabri is located east of the Coonamble–Gilgandra area. Six coal mines operate in the Narrabri– Gunnedah region and coal seam gas extraction is proposed in the Narrabri area. Data from Narrabri is included for comparison with that in the Coonamble–Gilgandra region. Any enquiries about this document Figure 1. • December 1924
Read below as Bob Newham, Loco Division Passenger Organiser, explores some of the incredible history behind rail in New South Wales. As you will discover, the month of November has many stories to tell… December 1924 The Dorrigo rail line was originally part of a grander scheme to link Coffs Harbour and Grafton with the Northern and North Western lines and was eventually opened on 23 December 1924. The Dorrigo line was one of the costliest branch railways built in NSW. It had some of the steepest gradients and tightest curves on the system and experienced high maintenance and running costs owing to the terrain and high rainfall of the area. The line experienced repeated losses throughout its existence. Although goods, other than timber were carried, timber was the main revenue source for the railway. Most of the logs and processed timber were sent to Sydney and in the early days of the line the NSWGR obtained sleepers for the north coast region from this area. The line lost its passenger service on 1 December 1957 and goods services were suspended on 27 October 1972 after flood damage. By the end of 1972 it became apparent that the Public Transport Commission at the time would not be re-opening the line. Parts of the line are still used by various heritage railways. December 1957 The Far West Express was an Australian passenger train operated by the New South Wales Government Railways from December 1957 until September 1975 from Dubbo to Bourke, Cobar and Coonamble. It connected at Dubbo in the morning with the overnight Western Mail from Sydney, returning in the afternoon to connect with the return Mail in the evening.
