The primary issues identified by the Government include the cost of providing the USO and how it’s provision might be competitively distributed. Secondary issues and issues that did not get a guernsey include improved access to telecommunications (and broadband) for the socially disadvantaged, improved service reliability and quality and an acknowledgement that telecommunications is an essential service. Over the next decade telecommunications will take centre stage as the way that we live, interact with our family and friends and the things around us changes faster than at any time in history.

ANTHONY ALBANESE MP LEADER OF THE AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY MEMBER FOR GRAYNDLER JIM CHALMERS MP SHADOW TREASURER MEMBER FOR RANKIN BRENDAN O’CONNOR MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT AND INDUSTRY SHADOW MINISTER FOR SCIENCE SHADOW MINISTER FOR SMALL AND FAMILY BUSINESS MEMBER FOR GORTON E&OE TRANSCRIPT DOORSTOP INTERVIEW PARLIAMENT HOUSE, CANBERRA THURSDAY, 14 MAY 2020 SUBJECTS: ABS Labour Force data; unemployment/underemployment; bushfire crisis; people missing out on support from the Government during COVID-19; JobKeeper; Australia’s relationship with China; Queensland’s bid for an equity stake in Virgin. BRENDAN O’CONNOR, SHADOW MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT AND INDUSTRY: Well, thanks very much for coming. I just wanted to respond to the ABS figures today and just say a couple of things about the unemployment rate, underemployment rate, underutilisation rate of the labour market. What is clear is as a result of a number of factors, the labour market has contracted, and we have very, very high underemployment. And yes, unemployment has risen, and one of the reasons it hasn’t even been higher is that the participation rate has collapsed. A very low participation rate and a very, very high underutilisation rate. Almost 20 per cent, which is, of course, unprecedented. And the other thing to remember is this is a picture of the labour market of last month. This is a month ago when the surveys were conducted. So, this is not telling us the story of today, it is telling us the story of a month ago. And yet, these figures are quite frightening. And I think it does go to the question, it was always going to be the case that our nation would be challenged by this pandemic.

AVRASYA İNCELEMELERİ MERKEZİ CENTER FOR EURASIAN STUDIES ANTHONY ALBANESE: AUSTRALIA'S LABOR OPPOSITION ELECTS NEW LEADER - 27.05.2019 BBC (27 May 2019) Australia's Labor opposition has chosen Anthony Albanese as its new leader after the party suffered an upset in the nation's general election. Previous leader Bill Shorten resigned on 18 May, immediately after conceding the election to incumbent Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Mr Albanese, a veteran politician, was elected unopposed as his successor. He vowed to rebuild Labor's vote, saying on Monday: "I am up for a hard job. I am up for hard work." "I intend to do my best to work with the Australian people to ensure that we elect a Labor government next time." Labor is reeling from the election which delivered Mr Morrison's conservative coalition a majority. The Liberal-Nationals had previously been in minority government. Last week, Mr Albanese described the election loss as "devastating", after months of opinion polls had indicated that Labor was expected to win. The 56-year-old MP, from Sydney, has held senior positions in past Labor governments. He previously lost the last ballot for the Labor leadership to Mr Shorten in 2013. Labor's challenge Mr Albanese has promised a "reset" of Labor's policy agenda but said he would not be rushed. The party had campaigned on a comprehensive set of reforms, including climate and tax policy changes. However, that ultimately failed to appeal to voters, with Labor suffering a 1.08% swing away from it nationally. It suffered its deepest losses in Queensland, where the party's vote was reduced to six seats of a possible 30.

  • 12. the Labor Party Campaign and Aftermath
    12. The Labor Party Campaign and Aftermath George Wright Disunity versus discipline Labor did not so much lose the election as lose government. In Australian football terms, we had put the Liberals 10 goals ahead when the year started. Labor’s defeat in 2013 had been determined years earlier as we persisted with a jaw-dropping lack of unity and seemingly endless infighting. It is remarkable that, amid all of that, we advanced literally hundreds of legislative reforms. However, very few of those were noticed by the public as a result of the number of news stories on our disunity. Even though Kevin Rudd’s opponents went silently after he resumed the leadership in June 2013, the years of infighting and undermining had left Labor in an unwinnable position. The policy changes, the legislation passed, and the reforms delivered counted for very little against an overwhelming perception of disunity. All the Coalition had to do to win was hold their nerve when we inevitably made a comeback, as we did when Kevin Rudd resumed the Labor leadership. The crucial thing that the Coalition had in spades, and ruthlessly drove home their advantage with, was the biggest thing Labor’s team lacked: discipline. Any observer of politics would observe that really where the problems for the Labor Party started was when we removed a first-term prime minister [Kevin Rudd in 2010]. Whatever the details of our incapacity to get over that, the truth is that we never did.
