A Classic for the Ages Highlights 37th Breeders’ Cup

All roads lead to Lexington. With every major prep and every “Win and You’re In” Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series race in the rearview mirror, the 37th Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky. is in full focus as racing’s World Championships beckon Nov. 6-7. Although there are 14 races and more than $31 million in purses and awards at stake, the $6 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) will garner the most attention. This year’s Classic figures to not only decide Horse of the Year, but is shaping up as one of the very best in the race’s long and storied history.

(Pre-Entered fields for all 14 Breeders’ Cup World Championships races will be announced live on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 11:30 a.m. ET on TVG and streamed on BreedersCup.com)

The Classic, at 1 ¼ miles, has long been a melting pot where younger stars test their elders on racing’s biggest stage. This year’s renewal only exemplifies that, as leading 3-year-olds AUTHENTIC and are set to clash with distinguished veterans IMPROBABLE, MAXIMUM SECURITY, and TOMS D’ETAT, with a lot more than purse money on the line. The

1 0 . 2 2 . 2 0 PAGE 1 outcome of the Classic will likely decide not only Horse of the Year, but two 2020 divisional titles: 3-Year-Old Male and Older Dirt Male.

The depth and quality of the Classic makes the favorite tough to decipher, but Sackatoga Stable’s Tiz the Law could be a tepid public choice off his overall body of work, which includes dominant Grade 1 wins in the at in March, the in June, and Travers at Saratoga in August. The son of Constitution was second at 7-10 in the (G1) on Sept. 5 for trainer Barclay Tagg. Tiz the Law was held out of the “Win and You’re In” Preakness, a Classic qualifier, after exiting the Derby with minor body stiffness. Tiz the Law, who is 6-for-8 lifetime, with both losses coming at , has breezed four times at Belmont since the Derby, including 6 furlongs in 1:12.26 on Oct. 16.

Runhappy Winner Tiz the Law @Eclipse Sportswire photo

“He went really well,” Tagg said of the breeze. “This was probably his most important work leading up to the Breeders’ Cup. I want to get a couple of breezes into him at Keeneland. How fast those will be I’ll determine as I see how he’s feeling and how he’s doing as he goes along. The main thing is for him to get used to that track and the surroundings. We’re just trying to take every precaution we can before the big race.”

Tiz the Law arrived at Keeneland last Sunday evening following a trip by van from New York. Tagg wanted him to get there early to acclimate to the main track in the colt’s quest for Horse of the Year, and to become the 13th 3-year-old to win the Classic.

Spendthrift Farm, MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables, and Starlight Racing Stable’s Authentic upset Tiz the Law in the Derby, and is part of a three-pronged attack, with Improbable and Maximum Security, that will attempt to give trainer Bob Baffert his fourth Classic win. The son of Into Mischief earned a berth into the race when he won Monmouth Park’s “Win and You’re In” TVG.com Haskell (G1) in July and was second, beaten a neck, by SWISS SKYDIVER in the Oct. 5 Preakness, also a Classic qualifier. Authentic is 5-for-7 lifetime and is another who would lock up Horse of the Year with a Classic win.

WinStar Farm, China Horse Club International Ltd., and SF Racing’s Improbable leads a sensational trio of older horses. The 4-year-old son of City Zip qualified for a Classic in a pair of Grade 1 “Win and You’re In” races this summer; Saratoga’s Whitney in August and over stablemate Maximum Security in the Awesome Again at Santa Anita Sept. 26. Improbable, who has won 7-for-14 career starts, including the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) at Santa Anita in June, would clinch both Horse of the Year and Older Dirt Male as well with a victory in the Classic.

Gary and Mary West, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Mrs. John Magnier’s Maximum Security earned a free berth into the Classic when he won Del Mar’s “Win and You’re In” TVG Pacific Classic (G1) in August. The 4-year-old son of 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner New Year’s Day is 10-for-13 lifetime, including the inaugural Saudi Cup (G1) at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in February. He is yet another who could secure a pair of Eclipse Awards with a win.

Baffert sent out all three stars for works at Santa Anita this past weekend, with Authentic going 5 furlongs in 59.80 and Improbable going 6 furlongs in 1:12.40 on Oct. 17, while Maximum Security went 59.80 a day later. Baffert said of Maximum Security, “I think that was the best he’s ever worked.” All three horses will likely work twice more over the next two weekends at Santa Anita before leaving for Kentucky.

G M B Racing’s Tom’s d’Etat, who qualified for the race when he captured the “Win and You’re In” Stephen Foster (G2) at Churchill Downs in June, could also be in line for some divisional hardware with a Classic win. The 7-year-old son of Smart Strike is 11-for-19 lifetime for trainer Al Stall Jr., but has not run since finishing third in the Whitney at even-money, after being eliminated due to a disastrous start. Tom’s d’Etat also won the Oaklawn Mile in April.

Swiss Skydiver edges Kentucky Derby winner Authentic in the “Win and You’re In” Preakness @Eclipse Sportswire photo

A pair of game-time decisions with the 3-year-olds SWISS SKYDIVER and HAPPY SAVER could impact the already deep Classic field. Trainer Kenny McPeek is considering his options with Peter Callahan’s filly Swiss Skydiver. The well-traveled Swiss Skydiver qualified for the Classic when she edged Authentic in the Preakness, some six weeks after she earned a berth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) with a victory in Saratoga’s “Win and You’re In” Alabama (G1). , in 2009 at Santa Anita, is the only female to win the Classic. Wertheimer et Frere’s homebred Happy Saver, who earned a berth into the race when he won ’s “Win and You’re In” (G1) for trainer Todd Pletcher, is also under consideration.

Graded stakes-winning older horses BY MY STANDARDS, GLOBAL CAMPAIGN, HIGHER , and MIDCOURT are also pointing to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, while TITLE READY is possible.

Monomoy Girl Goes for Her Second Longines Distaff

Michael Dubb, Monomoy Stables, The Elkstone Group, and Bethlehem Stables’ MONOMOY GIRL, who won the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs in 2018, will try to add to her Hall of Fame resume when she starts as the favorite in this year’s renewal. Run at 1 1/8 miles, the $2 million Distaff would be a remarkable story should the 5-year-old daughter of 2012 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Tapizar double up, as she missed her entire 4-year- old season after a bout of colic and a pulled muscle. Monomoy Girl, who is 12-for-14 lifetime, with six Grade 1 wins, is 3-for-3 this year, including Churchill’s La Troienne (G1) Sept. 4.

Just how strong a favorite Monomoy Girl will be depends on whether Swiss Skydiver runs in the race. The chestnut daughter of Daredevil is 6-for-11 lifetime, including a trio of easy graded stakes wins against 3-year-old fillies earlier this year.

Three “Win and You’re In” automatic qualifiers will add to the depth of the Distaff. Alice Bamford and Michael Tabor’s HARVEST MOON earned a Distaff berth when she won Santa Anita’s Zenyatta (G2) Sept. 27 for trainer Simon Callaghan, while Eclipse Partners, Martin Schwartz, and China Horse Club Ltd.’s’ VALIANCE did the same in Keeneland’s Oct. Oct. 4 Juddmonte Spinster (G1) for trainer Todd Pletcher. Calumet Farm’s VEXATIOUS earned her berth when she beat Midnight Bisou in Saratoga’s Personal Ensign (G1) in August for trainer Jack Sisterson.

Grade 1 winners CE CE, DUNBAR ROAD, HARD NOT TO LOVE, OLLIE’S CANDY, and SPEECH are also expected for what is shaping up as a stellar renewal of the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, as are graded stakes winners BONNY SOUTH, HOROLOGIST, and POINT OF HONOR.

Longines Turf Looks Ripe for the Taking with European Participation in Flux

The $4 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf, at 1 ½ miles, could be as wide open as ever. The American contingent seems a mixed bag, while the Europeans have seen two of their best— the supermare Enable (GB), along with (IRE)—recently head off to retirement, and a third—MAGICAL (IRE)—run poorly in her last start. These recent developments could result in one of the more competitive Turf renewals in recent memory.

The Americans will be led by Wachtel Stable, Gary Barber, R.A. Hill Stable, and Reeves Thoroughbred Racing’s CHANNEL MAKER, who has won two straight for trainer Bill Mott and earned an automatic berth into the race when he won Saratoga’s “Win and You’re In” Sword Dancer (G1) in August. The 7-year-old son of 2007 Turf winner is 7-for-36 lifetime and has been a divisional stalwart for the past several years. While he was 11th in the Turf at Churchill Downs in 2018 and 12th last year at Santa Anita, Channel Maker has seemingly turned a corner of late, as he also won the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1) at Belmont Park Oct. 3.

United streaks to victory in the John Henry Turf Championship @Eclipse Sportswire photo

LNJ Foxwoods’ UNITED invades from California and will look to one better his second in the Turf last year for trainer Richard Mandella. The 5-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway, who is 7- for-16 lifetime, was a head away from upsetting Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar last year and hasn’t missed a beat in 2020. United is 4-for-5, with a quartet of Grade 2 wins, most recently in the John Henry Turf Championship Sept. 26 at Santa Anita.

Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor’s Magical would rate a solid favorite should she make the trip from Ireland for trainer Aidan O’Brien. The 5-year-old daughter of (IRE) is a seven-time Group 1 winner and was second in the Longines Turf to Enable in 2018. Magical is 12-for-26 lifetime and qualified for the Turf when she won the “Win and You’re In” Irish Champion (G1) over Ghaiyyath at Leopardstown in September but was recently third as a heavy favorite over soft ground in the Oct. 17 Qipco (G1, see race recap below), putting her participation in question.

Three others who won “Win and You’re In” qualifiers could start, as Otter Bend Stables’ GUFO won the Belmont Derby (G1) Oct. 3 for trainer Christophe Clement, while Little Red Feather Racing, Gordon Jacobson, and Philip Belmonte’s RED KING won the Del Mar Handicap Presented by The Racing Association (G2) Aug. 22 for trainer Phil D’Amato. His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed Racing’s LORD NORTH (IRE) won the Prince of Wales’s (G1) at Royal Ascot in June, though he was just 10th in the Champion Stakes for trainer John

FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Brimming with Depth

The $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by PDJF (G1) is shaping up as arguably the deepest of any of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races, as a winning case could be made for many of the 14 potential starters, including Michael Dubb, Head of Plains Partners, Robert LaPenta, and Bethlehem Stables’ defending champion UNI (GB) in a field that could be oversubscribed.

Favoritism could go any number of different ways but Uni figures well-backed for trainer Chad Brown, especially since she just secured her first win of the year over the course and distance by defending her title in the First Lady (G1), which was a “Win and You’re In” for the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Filly & Mare Turf (G1). The 6-year-old daughter of More Than Ready was the Champion Turf Female last year on the basis of her Mile win at Santa Anita, but lost her first two starts this year before winning the First Lady. Uni, who is 11-for-21 lifetime, will reportedly be making the final start of her career in the Mile.

Starship Jubilee takes the “Win and You’re In” Ricoh Woodbine Mile @Eclipse Sportswire photo

Potentially five “Win and You’re In” automatic qualifiers could meet the starter, as Harrell Ventures’ HALLADAY, who wired Saratoga’s Fourstardave (G1) Aug. 22 for trainer Todd Pletcher, Bonne Chance Farm and Stud RDI’s IVAR (BRZ), who won the course and distance Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) Oct. 3 for trainer Paulo Lobo, Peter Brant’s RAGING BULL (FR), who won the Shoemaker Mile (G1) at Santa Anita in May for Brown and was second in the Shadwell, and Blue Heaven Farm’s STARSHIP JUBILEE, who beat males in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1) Sept. 19 for trainer Kevin Attard, all expected for the US. From Europe, Flaxman Stables and Coolmore’s (IRE), who won the Queen Anne (G1) at Royal Ascot in June and was fourth in the Mile last year for trainer Aidan O’Brien, is a possibility, though he was just 10th in the Queen Elizabeth II Sponsored by QIPCO (G1, see race recap below) Saturday at Ascot.

BEAU RECALL (IRE), CASA CREED, DIGITAL AGE (IRE), FACTOR THIS, MARCH TO THE ARCH, MO FORZA, SHARP SAMURAI, and (GB) are all potential American-based FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile starters, while (GB), SAFE VOYAGE (IRE), SISKIN, and SPEAK OF THE DEVIL (FR) could make the trip from Europe.

Brown Holds Two Aces in Maker’s Mark Filly & Mare Turf

The $2 million Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, at 1 3/16 miles, looks like it will go through the Chad Brown-trained duo of e Five Racing Thoroughbreds’ RUSHING FALL, who is undefeated in three starts this year, and Peter Brant’s SISTERCHARLIE (IRE), who won the race in 2018 en route to a divisional championship.

Rushing Fall, a 5-year-old daughter of More Than Ready who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at Del Mar in 2017, has had a remarkable career, as she’s won a Grade 1 race at 2,3,4, and 5, and is 11-for-14 lifetime. She’s also shown a love for the Keeneland turf course, where she is 5-for-6 lifetime, including a repeat in the Jenny Wiley (G1) in July. Rushing Fall, who has not started since winning Saratoga’s Diana (G1) Aug. 23, will race beyond 1 1/8 miles for the first time. Sistercharlie, a 6-year-old daughter of Myboycharlie (IRE), was Champion Turf Female in 2018 after winning the Filly & Mare Turf at Churchill Downs and was third in the race last year at Santa Anita but is 0-for-2 this year. She hasn’t started since running third in the Diana. Sistercharlie is 10-for-17 lifetime and won the Jenny Wiley in 2018.

A trio of “Win and You’re In” qualifiers also could start, with Allen Stable’s homebred CIVIL UNION coming in off four straight wins for trainer Shug McGaughey, including the Flower Bowl (G1) at Belmont Park Oct. 10, while George Krikorian’s homebred MUCHO UNUSUAL won the Rodeo Drive (G1) Sept. 26 at Santa Anita for trainer Tim Yakteen, and His Highness The Aga

Sprint Could Mark Vekoma’s Long Awaited Return

The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), at 6 furlongs, figures to showcase some of the world’s fastest dirt horses, with as many as five “Win and You’re In” qualifiers lining up in a race that could mark the much-anticipated return of R. A. Hill Stable and Gatsas Stables’ VEKOMA, who was one of the leading handicap horses in the country for the first half of the season.

Vekoma, a 4-year-old son of Candy Ride (ARG) is perfect in three starts this year for trainer George Weaver, including the Carter (G1) at Aqueduct in April and “Win and You’re In” (G1) at Belmont Park in his last start, July 4. Vekoma, who is 6-for-8 lifetime, earned a berth into the Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile with his Met Mile win, but Weaver indicated he’s leaning towards the Sprint for his return.

1 0 . 2 2 . 2 0 PAGE 11 The other four Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series winners, Dan Agnew, Rodney Orr, Jerry Schneider, and John Xitco’s COLLUSION ILLUSION, who won the Bing Crosby (G1) at Del Mar in August for trainer Mark Glatt, Madaket Stables, Gary Barber, and Tom Kagele’s C Z ROCKET, who is 5-for-5 since being claimed by trainer Peter Miller and won the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2) Sept. 27, Diamond 100 Racing Club, Amy Dunne, D.P. Racing, and trainer Patrick Biancone’s DIMAOND OOPS, who won the course and distance Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (G2) Oct. 2, and Mr. Amore Stable’s homebred FIRENZE FIRE, who won Belmont’s Vosburgh (G2) Sept. 26 for trainer Kelly Breen, all will be well-backed at the windows in a Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The race could also include BON RAISON, COMPLEXITY, ECHO TOWN, FLAGSTAFF, FRANK’S ROCKETTE, HOG CREEK HUSTLE, WHITMORE and YAUPON.

Frontrunning Jackie’s Warrior taking the “Win and You’re In” Champagne @Eclipse Sportswire photo

Jackie’s Warrior is one to catch in TVG Juvenile, Contenders Galore in Juvenile Fillies

The $2 million TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1), and the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), both at 1 1/16 miles, headline Future Stars Friday, where all five Breeders’ Cup races on the program are for 2-year-olds. Both the Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies are expected to be filled with several talented rookies that have already flashed tremendous potential, while hinting the best is yet to come.

Kirk and Judy Robison’s JACKIE’S WARRIOR is unbeaten in four starts for trainer Steve Asmussen and earned an automatic starting berth into the race when he wired Belmont Park’s “Win and You’re In” Champagne (G1) Oct. 10. The son of Maclean’s Music also led throughout in the Saratoga Special (G2) in August and the Hopeful (G1) in September, and will go for a championship when he tries two turns for the first time.

A pair of undefeated “Win and You’re In” Challenge winners would also be in line for a championship. Godolphin’s homebred ESSENTIAL QUALITY may hold an edge, as he won the track and distance Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) Oct. 3 to for trainer Brad Cox, while Albaugh Family Stables’ SITTIN ON GO won the Sept. 5 Iroquois (G3) for trainer Dale Romans. BASSO, CAISSON, DREAMER’S DISEASE, HOT ROD CHARLIE, KEEPMEINMIND, LIKEABLE, REINVESTMENT RISK, ROMBAUER, and SPIELBERG could also start.

1 0 . 2 2 . 2 0 PAGE 13 The Juvenile Fillies figures to have a smaller field, though quality abounds among a quartet of undefeated runners, with Harold Lerner, Magdalena Racing, and Nehoc Stables’ SIMPLY RAVISHING getting a slight edge based on her 6 ¼-length track and distance win in the “Win and You’re In” Alcibiades (G1) Oct. 2 for trainer Kenny McPeek. The daughter of Laoban broke her maiden at Saratoga in August and won the off-the-turf P.G. Johnson there in September. She will face by far the stiffness test of her career in the Juvenile Fillies.

Zedan Racing Stable’s PRINCESS NOOR could be favored for trainer Bob Baffert, as the daughter of Not This Time is also 3-for-3, with easy wins in the Del Mar Debutante (G1) in September and Santa Anita’s “Win and You’re In” Chandelier (G1) Sept. 26, while two other “Win and You’re In” Challenge winners, Siena Farm and trainer Tim Hamm’s DAYOUTOFTHEOFFICE, who won Belmont’s Frizette (G1) Oct. 10 to make it 3-for-3, and Albaugh Family Stables’ GIRL DADDY, who won the Pocahontas (G3) Sept. 3 at Churchill for trainer Dale Romans to stay perfect in two starts, also warrant plenty of respect. VEQUIST, who won Saratoga’s Spinaway (G1) in September for trainer Butch Reid, is also expected for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, as are CRAZY BEAUTIFUL, FOREST CARAWAY, PRINCESS SECRET, and TRAVEL COLUMN.

Six other Breeders’ Cup races worth $1 million each will be run Friday and Saturday, with several likely to draw overflow fields full of divisional leaders and stakes winners from both America and Europe.

Saturday’s trio of remaining Breeders’ Cup races is led by the 7-furlong Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) and will be a definite highlight, with Michael Lund Petersen’s freakishly fast multiple Grade 1 winner GAMINE squaring off against “Win and You’re In” qualifiers INTHEMIDSTOFBIZ and SERENGETI EMPRESS, in a field that could also include BELLAFINA, BELL’S THE ONE, CE CE, COME DANCING, HARD NOT TO LOVE, SALLY’S CURLIN, SCONSIN, and VENETIAN HARBOR

The Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), run this year at two turns, could be oversubscribed, with Gary Barber’s 2019 Preakness winner a leading contender, while ART COLLECTOR, BOURBON CALLING, COMPLEXITY, HARPERS FIRST RIDE, HOG CREEK HUSTLE, JESUS’ TEAM, MIND CONTROL, MR FREEZE, MR. MONEY, PIRATE’S PUNCH, RUSHIE, SILVER DUST, SLEEPY EYES TODD, and TRUE TIMBER have all earned qualifying points, while JASPER PRINCE, KNICKS GO, MIDNIGHT SANDS, and PINGXIANG could all start.

The 5 ½-furlong Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) is another race expected to draw a crowd, with American “Win and You’re In” winners IMPRIMIS and OLEKSANDRA (AUS) leading the way, while GLASS SLIPPERS (GB) qualified from Europe. A group of talented North American-based runners and a few classy Europeans figure to figure to meet in both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, which will both be run at 1 mile. GRETSKY THE GREAT and MUTASAABEQ looked good winning North American “Win and You’re In” races, as did CADILLAC (IRE), NEW MANDATE (IRE), and SEALIWAY (FR) in Europe.
