Warren, Charles B. Tillinghast Jr. ’32 Transnational Humanities Professor of International Studies and Professor of Anthropology, will lead the March 13, 2009 2009-2010 Pembroke Seminar. The seminar will look at global flows of people and technol- ogy that involve reimagining the body and transforming what it means to be human. It aims to trace patterns of global flows, and responses—international and local—to the ten- sions and uncertainties they unleash, seeking to understand the changing ways bodies are com- modified and the individual experiences and ide- ological constructions of these processes. Schol- ars will explore sites of anxiety that arise when innovations in global labor markets and biotech- nologies appear to push ahead of the law. How are these sites moralized and politicized? How are international norms and regulatory strate- gies formulated to define rapidly moving cur- rents of change? This inquiry calls for a variety of disciplinary perspectives and case studies from different parts of the world. The discourse of human dignity misrepresents the meaning of empowerment for modern citizens, making them interested more in political gestures and less in profit, comfort and protection from abuse. Dignity‘s epistemes— self-assertion, recognition, political action, public-spiritedness, responsibility, resistance, the denial of animal instinct, sacrifice—should not be human ideals, for they are exactly the opposite of the sovereign‘s characteristics and because they are responsible for recursive violence that preserves the status quo.

Lincoln 2008 Abstract This dissertation proposes a reading of postcolonial African literature in light of the continent’s continued status as a “remnant” of globalization—a waste product, trash heap, disposable raw material, and degraded offcut of the processes that have so greatly enriched, dignified and beautified their beneficiaries. The “excremental” vision of African authors, poets and filmmakers reflects their critical consciousness of the imbalances and injustices that characterize African societies and polities under pressure from monetized capitalism and domestic corruption. The figure of superfluity, excess, destruction or extravagance—concepts gathered together under the sign of “waste”—is a central thematic, symbolic, and formal feature of many postcolonial African works, and I suggest that literature functions in this context to document, critique, and offer alternatives to the culture of waste that predominates in political and social life on the continent.

Suggesting that this Kantian notion of dignity, employed liberally in human rights work, modern constitutions, and philosophical frameworks, often involves an obfuscation of the reality of humans’ existence in the world, It is proposed that the term should be replaced by disposability, and that postcolonial feminism can usefully look to postcolonial literary texts to see how they conceive of justice beyond the terms of dignity. Theoretical notions of the literary are also employed to propose a robust notion of Marxist postcolonial feminism that goes beyond the liberal notions of rights. Abstract This thesis interrogates the part played by the figure of ‘the Indian’ in the formation of the U.S. national consciousness as reflected in the nineteenth-century fictional works of James Fenimore Cooper, Robert Montgomery Bird, Lydia Maria Child, Helen Hunt Jackson and Herman Melville. I propose that new understandings can be reached concerning Indian representations and national identity in the selected texts via an approach that combines postcolonial and psychoanalytic theories, in particular as detailed by Ranjana Khanna in Dark Continents (2003). I explore how the national ideals articulated by Cooper, Bird, Child and Jackson are predicated on repression identifiable in historical revisionism, disavowal, ideological rhetoric, generic conventions and so forth, which reflects a melancholic nationalism more generally concerning the colonial subjugation of Native Americans.

Halley’s article takes as its starting point masculine identification in the signature “Ian Halley.” But the designation of Ian as a “masculine” name perhaps causes one to fall into a trap that Halley has set for readers. Pointing out the “gender” of a name, particularly in a language that does not inscribe gender in nouns, adjectives, or past participles, commits a feminist error of always inscribing gender or attributing discrimination along gendered lines to every aspect of living. Gender thus carries the attributes of value. It is from Ian’s performative and phantasmatic iteration that Halley en- gages two writers, Leo Bersani and Duncan Kennedy, who adopt a “queer” theoretical position that must, in Halley’s view, depart from feminism. Decry- ing a form of moralism apparently endemic to contemporary feminism, Halley gives a reading of cultural feminism’s roots in some of the more radical provoca- tions from MacKinnon and Dworkin, only to underscore how contemporary feminism, for better and for worse, has rejected all that was radical in those al- 1 ready highly problematic positions. * Ranjana Khanna is Associate Professor of English, the Program in Literature, and Women’s Studies at Duke University. I declare that my thesis consists of 76,771 words. 3 Abstract This thesis proposes a reconstructed, critical cosmopolitanism that uses the identified core components of the normative branch of cosmopolitanism rooted in (Kantian) moral philosophy and the works of a wide variety of critical theorists that include feminist, postcolonial, and queer perspectives. I pay particular attention to those theorists influenced by poststructuralist deconstructions of the stable subject who focus either on the normative theory directly or on components essential to it. Normative theorists, exemplified by Thomas Pogge, Simon Caney and others, usually focus on global distributive justice, taking as a given, for example, who counts as human.
