Welcome to the Laymen Playmen’s 27 th production! Your support year after year humbles us and we thank you!! Without you, our audience, none of this would be possible and we appreciate you choosing to spend some time with us. We have been welcomed by two congregations who have allowed us to use their space to rehearse and present our yearly endeavor for the past 3 years. Pastor Glenn Lambert and the Emmanuel Evangelical Congregational Church in Hatfield most graciously allowed us to use their facility for our auditions and rehearsals. We also had the opportunity to rehearse at the Hatfield Fire House-Thank You Kurt! And Lansdale United Methodist Church providing us with a stage, home and support beyond our expectations! Thank you to Pastor Max, Bill and Cindy Scheetz, and all the members for welcoming us with open arms! God is good, all the time! The story you see here today is a very “loose” adaptation of the story of Annie Oakley and Frank Butler. The true story behind these two real people is a true love-at-first-sight forever love. Frank met Annie when she was 15 and he was 23. They married soon after, although Frank said they married when she was 22. Frank and Annie were a true team, he being her manager. They were in both Pawnee Bill’s show and Buffalo Bill’s show, and when the show’s merged for about 5 years, they also were headline performers. They were married until her death at age 66 in 1926, and he died 18 days later after he stopped eating when Annie passed. Annie was actually the sixth child in a family of eight, raised by their mother when their father died. Chief Sitting Bull was a Sioux Indian who was an activist for his time. He died in 1890. Buffalo Bill was a man who won and lost his fortune several times, and passed away in 1917. Pawnee Bill got his name from being an interpreter for the Pawnee Indians, and was a very savvy businessman. He lived until 1942. So the characters in our story were real people, although our story doesn’t tell their full story. A HUGE thank you from me to all our cast, crew, orchestra, angels, ushers, board members, family and friends. We are a family here to do what we love for His Glory. And a BIG thanks to you, our audience. Without you, none of this makes any sense-we would be singing and dancing to an empty room! Your support for us not only lifts us up, but provides heat for a family for the winter or food for a family who otherwise would go hungry. The Hatfield Pastor’s Fund is the reason we do what we do, and both of us thank you. So sit back, relax and watch what happens when a girl with a gun tries to win the heart of a man with hat in a town full of cowboys, indians, sharpshooters, bronco busters, dancers, singers and a whole lot of heart! Annie, get that gun and go get your man! Enjoy! 5 C r e w s

Wow, another year has rushed by yet again. This past year has indeed been filled with both blessings and heartache. As one of our members observed, we’ve added a few names to our memorial page this year. And yet, we also have a number of first time performers on the stage with us as well. Such are the joys and sorrows of a close knit group that have been together for some 27 years. So please join us in prayers for peace and understanding for the families of those who are no longer with us and thanksgiving for all of those who continue to give of their time and talents to bring this show to life. A few weeks ago, one member of our production team made a comment during a rehearsal that kind of took off and exploded in my brain (Something that I’m sure my family and co-workers will admit happens often). So, I thought I need to share a little of what it takes to bring this production from the initial spark of excitement when we choose a show, through the labor and delivery of the last few weeks of rehearsal. In no specific order: We have to scramble to find rehearsal space. Thank you to EEC and The Hatfield Firehouse, but it’s not about you….We have to print up many copies of scripts and music. Thank you to the few local companies who don’t even realize you have donated to our cause, but it’s not about you…. We have a committee who scours the area looking for the best props to suit the show. Thank you for your tireless efforts, but it’s not about you….. We have another committee who travel many places searching for, modifying, and even making costumes from scratch. Thank you for making everyone look so great on the stage, but it’s not about you…. Many of us get together and construct and paint a set that helps bring this story to life. Thank you for all of the hard work, but it’s not about you…. And there is the tech team who bring together the lights and sound that make it possible to see and hear the performers. Thank you for the dedication you show year after year, but it’s not about you…. And of course there is Lansdale United Methodist Church who allow us to come invade their space. Thanks you for your generosity and patience, but it’s not about you…. There are those who are behind the scenes, making sure actors are where they need to be, and provide us all with snacks. Thank you for taking care of us, but it’s not about you….. There are indeed the actors who give up a large portion of their home life to practice and rehearse to bring the audience a great show. Thank you for sharing your talents, but it’s not about you…. There is the Pit who bring their tremendous talent to fill The Stringer Auditorium with amazing music. Thank you for giving of your time and talent to make us successful, but it’s not about you…… How could I possibly forget the Choreographer, how can you possibly teach everyone all of those moves, but it's not about you.... And our Musical Director, the epitome of patience, you help everyone sound fantastic, but it’s not about you…… And, what can I say about The Director, endless hours performing a thankless job. Thank you for your willingness to give so much to us, but it’s not about you…. And not to be forgotten, there is the audience. Thank you for coming out to support us. Without you, we could not continue our mission, but I’m afraid it’s not about you either…… In the end it’s about a small child who has a pair of gloves when the temperature drops below freezing. It’s about a family that has food on the table right now that would otherwise have to go hungry. It’s about providing a helping hand to real people, right here in this community. Thank you to everyone for your efforts that allow us to make a significant difference in the lives of others. God Bless, Fred Wiesinger, President 8 The Laymen Playmen T h a n k s

As God’s children, we are truly blessed every day to meet new people who come in to our lives and leave a lasting impression. Even more special are those who come into our lives and teach us to be better people. The most special are those who touch many lives over and over again, helping us all to be better people and leaving the world a better place. Such a man was Steve Frederick.

I first knew Steve as a teacher at North Penn when I was a student there in 1973. Steve, or Fred as many knew him, was not your normal teacher but rather helped to empower each student, enabling all of us to start on the path of discovery that led to who we are now. And then fate took me off to college, career, and marriage.

I then became reacquainted with Steve in 1997 when my family first became involved with The Laymen Playmen. Steve was the consummate “Leader of the Band” and once again taught me many things. I never before understood that the conductor’s baton is in fact a percussive instrument. And, thanks to Steve and another dear friend from years gone by who shall remain named only as Chris, I know the sound 25 pounds of puffed rice makes when it falls from the ceiling directly over the head of a band director. These were indeed fun years. And then fate took Steve off to a different career path that did not permit him the time to continue to direct for us.

I had yet a third time to become re-acquainted with Steve as my eldest became a student at North Penn and Steve was there as Principal. As a parent I got to see another side of Steve that was really just a different view of the teacher that I knew so many years ago. His loving concern for all of the students was present in everything that he did, and I especially enjoyed coming up to the Principal whenever and wherever I saw him and suggesting “Let’s Shoot Crap”. And then retirement came and suited Steve well, but God decided that he had a different path for Steve to follow.

Steve, you are missed every day by the many people you touched during your time here on Earth. We are all indeed better people for having known you. I will not profess to possess the wisdom to fully understand God’s will. I can only accept it and look forward to seeing you once again, in a far better place. And, I have no doubt you will greet me with that same smile, warm handshake, and possibly an invitation to “shoot crap”. 14 LANSDALE United Methodist Church www.lansdaleumc.org
