Before I go any further I must draw your attention to the main picture on the front cover. Morwenna forwarded this to me a little while ago. Her son, Tim has taken this fantastic shot of the Milky Way as seen from Holy Trinity. With Epithany Sunday being on 6th of this month I thought it only appropriate that it should feature on our front page. I cannot begin to understand how Tim was able to capture this image but I sincerely hope that he can provide us with further pictures in the future. I just hope that it reproduces successfully in print. The two accompanying photographs show the Community Nativity party making their long journey from Nazareth (The Square) up to the Bethlehem (Holy Trinity) on Sunday 15th December. Now in its fourth year this commu- nity event continues to draw in impressive numbers of participants both young and old. Over 50 shepherds, wise men and supporters escorted Mary and Joseph on their epic journey. Our thanks go to Katherine and Sam who have produced and planned the event each year. I am very pleased to say that they have agreed to continue in future years despite the fact that they have moved away from the village in recent weeks. 6 Our festive December began with our Advent Carols and Readings. Once again Cantabile Choir led the service and were ably supported with items from Paul and Ruth and a selection of readers. The service attracted a good congregation despite several of our number being unable to attend owing to illness and proved popular in its concert/service format. It’s important that we offer a range of services and events to please a wide range of tastes. On the following Tuesday the Memories of Penponds Parish Group met for its Christmas gathering. It must have been one of the longest meetings that we have had. We didn't finish until gone one o'clock and I was back in church for Open Tuesday at 2! It’s a good job that I live next door! On Saturday 7th we held our Christmas Fayre and I’m sure that Ruth will pro- vide a fuller report. Not only are such events important for raising funds but they also provide an opportunity for local folk to get together. As it was the Christmas season I went looking for Three Wise Men and look who I found! It was the best that I could do!!! At this event we launched the planned giving scheme that I highlighted in last month’s magazine. We don’t like asking directly for assistance in raising funds, but the truth is we must do all that we can to make good our annual £10 000 short-fall. If you are able to help please contact our treasurer, Richard Olds on 01209 612680 7 Our next big event was Festive Fish and Chip Friday. Again illness prevented one or two of our regulars from attending but 15 of us enjoyed a Christmas themed feast. We are all very full after a normal fish and chip event thanks to the generous portions provided by Cousin Jacks at Pengegon, but we all had to loosen our belts as trifle and cakes and biscuits in abundance were provid- ed to follow the main event. It took a long time for us to find the energy to stand and leave the tables! 8 Just ahead of the Community Nativity on the Sunday morning we had our Christingle service in church. Olive had already delivered a Christingle event in Penponds School which saw all the pupils participate. This morning we began “Experience Christmas”, again with the children from Penponds School. A class at a time joins us at Holy Trinity for a pro- gramme of learning and sharing over a visit of 90 minutes. We are very hap- py that the village school children have four significant visits to us per year in addition to the weekly visits of our team as they provide assemblies in the school itself. 9 WEEKLY BIBLE READINGS Nos. 1 & 2 refer to 1st DATE READERS READINGS th 5 January 1: Anne O Isaiah 60. 1-6 Epiphany 2: Jayne Ephesians 3. 1-12 Celebrant: Matthew 2. 1-12 th 12 January st 1 Sunday of 1: Evelyn Isaiah 42. 1-9 Epiphany. 2: Frank Acts 10. 34-43 Baptism of Celebrant: Matthew 3. 13-end Christ. th 19 January 1: Caroline Isaiah 49. 1-7 nd 2 Sunday of 2: Philip 1 Corinthians 1. 1-9 Epiphany Celebrant: John 1. 29-42 th 26 January 1: Ruth Isaiah 9. 1-4 rd 3 Sunday of 2: Mike 1 Corinthians 1. 10-18 Epiphany Celebrant: Matthew 4. 12-23 nd 2 February 1: Anne O Malachi 3. 1-5 Candlemas 2: Jayne Hebrews 2. 14-end Celebrant: Luke 2. 22-40 HOLY TRINITY CHURCH PENPONDS Coffee Mornings in church Saturday 4th January 10am until noon 10 WEEKLY BIBLE READINGS Nos. 1 & 2 refer to 1st & 2nd readings i.e. 1= O.T 2=N.T DATE SIDES PERSONS OFFERTORY th 5 January Ann D Anne O Jayne th 12 January Margaret Ann D Paul th 19 January Paul Caroline Mike th 26 January Mike Evelyn Frank nd 2 February Evelyn Jayne Anne O Annual Magazine Subs Now Due £5 11 On the second day of the “Experience” events we had a fairly heavy frost which amidst all the rain that we’ve been having came as a pleasant sur- prise! On the next page you will see a recipe which is the first of what is hoped to be a regular feature. And finally—just an update re Connie Davolt’s correspondence. It appears that her grandfather painted the picture from a postcard image once he was in Black Diamond, Washington where he went to work in the mines. Connie also says she’s working on her pasty recipe. Any tips for her? Philip From Tony Brooks Further to your piece on Hell's Mouth and the seal. Attached an image that I took of the seals at Godrevy. Counting was difficult but I got to about 120.. On the subject of wildlife, back in the summer, early one morning at about 6.00 am, out of an upstairs window I saw this roe deer. The image is poor as it is cropped from a bigger image. I have lived at Polstrong Cottage for over 40 years and it is the first time that I have seen a deer here or on the lanes. I understand that they have been seen in Penponds woods. I wonder whether other people in the village have seen deer in their gardens? 12 Recipe of the Month Ginger Cake 225 g SR or wholemeal flour 1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda 1 tablespoon ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground mixed spice 115 g unsalted butter 115g dark Muscovado sugar 115g golden syrup 115g black treacle 250 ml milk 1 egg ICING 150g icing sugar and zest & juice of 1 lemon Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin Preheat oven to 180 degrees or 170 degrees fan Please sugar, treacle, syrup and milk into saucepan and warm gently, stir- ring until all sugar is dissolved.
