Fox Sports, Fox Sports 2 and Fox Sports 3 roll out across the region on 15 August in both standard definition and HD. These replace the previous versions of Fox Sports as well as Fox Sports Plus HD and Star Sports everywhere except China and South Korea, where Star Sports will continue to be offered. Fox Sports News and Fox Football Chan- nel HD remain unchanged, as do the network’s non-linear offerings – Fox Sports Play and Fox Sports Mobile. Each of the new brands will cater to distinct groups of sports fans, says Joon Lee, FIC Asia’s executive vice president, content and communications, APAC and Middle East and managing director, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. Coming two years after the end of the ESPN Star Sports joint venture, the latest branding is aimed at going even bigger with the Fox Sports brand. More simply, “we inherited the Star Sports brand and it’s confusing to have the two with distinctions that are not clear enough,” Lee says. “It’s essential for us to come up with a network under one brand, which is Fox Sports,” he adds.

  • 'Sin' Tax Bill up for Crucial Vote
Headline ‘Sin’ tax bill up for crucial vote MediaTitle Manila Standard Philippines (www.thestandard.com.ph) Date 03 Jun 2019 Section NEWS Order Rank 6 Language English Journalist N/A Frequency Daily ‘Sin’ tax bill up for crucial vote Advocates of a law raising taxes on cigarettes worried that heavy lobbying by tobacco companies over the weekend could affect the vote in the Senate Monday. Former Philhealth director Anthony Leachon and UP College of Medicine faculty member Antonio Dans said a failure of the bill to pass muster would deprive the government’s Universal Health Care program of funding. “Definitely, the lobbying can affect how our senators will behave... how they will vote,” said Leachon, also chairman of the Council of Past Presidents of the Philippine College of Physicians. But Leachon and Dans said they remained confident that senators who supported the sin tax law in 2012 would support the new round of increases on cigarette taxes. These were Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, Senators Panfilo Lacson, Francis Pangilinan, Antonio Trillanes IV and re-elected Senator Aquilino Pimentel III. They are also hopeful that the incumbent senators who voted against the increase in the excise taxes on cigarettes in 2012—Senate President Vicente Sotto III, Senate Pro Tempore Ralph Rectp and outgoing Senators Francis Escudero and Gregorio Honasan—would have a change of heart. While Pimentel, who ran in the last midterm elections, supported the increase in tobacco taxes in 2012, he did not sign Senator Juan Edgardo Angara’s committee report, saying the bill should be properly scrutinized as it might result in the death of the tobacco industry.

These metaphors themselves change. Those which grip our imagination, and, for a time, govern our thinking about scenarios and possibilities of cultural transformation, give way to new metaphors, which make us think about these difficult questions in new terms” (Stuart Hall 1996f:287). iii SUMMARY Title: Ideology and myth in South African television: a critical analysis of SABC channel brand identities Name: Woudri Botha Supervisor: Prof Jeanne van Eeden Department: Department of Visual Arts Degree: Magister Artium (Visual Studies) Summary: This dissertation investigates the brand identities of the South African Broadcasting Corporation television channels SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3 during the first decade of the 2000s (from 2000 to 2009). The study explores the manifestation and dissemination of dominant political ideologies and myths by the SABC television channels and their respective brand identities. It is argued that SABC television channels are structured and organised according to specific brand ideologies that match dominant political ideologies prevalent in South Africa.

  • Chapter 3, Section 1 – China and Continental Southeast Asia.Pdf
CHAPTER 3 CHINA AND THE WORLD SECTION 1: CHINA AND CONTINENTAL SOUTHEAST ASIA Key Findings • China’s pursuit of strategic and economic interests in Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos often jeopardizes regional environmental conditions, threatens government ac- countability, and undermines commercial opportunities for U.S. firms. • China has promoted a model of development in continental Southeast Asia that focuses on economic growth, to the exclu- sion of political liberalization and social capacity building. This model runs counter to U.S. geopolitical and business interests as Chinese business practices place U.S. firms at a disadvantage in some of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing economies, particu- larly through behavior that facilitates corruption. • China pursues several complementary goals in continental Southeast Asia, including bypassing the Strait of Malacca via an overland route in Burma, constructing north-south infra- structure networks linking Kunming to Singapore through Laos, Thailand, Burma, and Vietnam, and increasing export opportunities in the region. The Chinese government also de- sires to increase control and leverage over Burma along its 1,370-mile-long border, which is both porous and the setting for conflict between ethnic armed groups (EAGs) and the Burmese military. Chinese firms have invested in exploiting natural re- sources, particularly jade in Burma, agricultural land in Laos, and hydropower resources in Burma and along the Mekong Riv- er. China also seeks closer relations with Thailand, a U.S. treaty ally, particularly through military cooperation. • As much as 82 percent of Chinese imported oil is shipped through the Strait of Malacca making it vulnerable to disrup- tion.
